Th1S IS the elghteenth year Manhattan Hlgh School has been rep
resented 1n the Natlonal Honor SOC1Cty The members were chosen on
the baSlS of scholarshlp leadersh1p character and servlce
The Natlonal Honor Soclety was organlzed 1n 1900 to create en
thuslasm for scholarshlp to Stlmulate a deslre to render SCTVICG to pro
mote leadershlp and to develop character 1n h1gh school students
Appomtments to the soc1ety are determ1ned by a po1nt system Em
phaslzlng scholarshlp the total number of grade polnts of a student are
doubled To th1s IS added the leadershm and SGFVICC polnts The stu
dent must also have good moral character th1S IS voted on by both
the sen1or class and the faculty The students rankmg ln the upper f1f
teen percent of the class Wh1Ch are approved by faculty and seniors
are then chosen as members
The emblem of the soclety IS the keystone and the flam1ng torch
The keystone bears at 1tS four corners the letters C S L and S Wh1Ch
stand for the four ca1d1nal purposes of the organ1zat1on character
scholarshlp leadershlp and SCFVICG
Th1s years members were honored by a spec1al assembly on Apr1l
20 M1 H H BlShOp mtroduced the members and gave a br1ef expla
nat1on of the manner 1n whlch they were chosen A receptlon was also
g1ven ln honor of the new members on Aprxl 25 at whlch the parents of
the members were present Followmg the program 1efreshments were
Becom1ng a member IS consldered a d1st1nct honor, respons1b1l1ty
and challenge It 1S somethlng for every student to work for through
h1S lugh school years Th1S membershlp IS not Just a reward for
thlngs done, but a suggestlon of how much more can be done by those
possesslng the qual1t1es of leadershlp, scholarslup, character and servlce
