We've had a good time this year, haven't we? I've always looked forward to High School. It al- ways seemed the top. Remember how we looked across the court last year and positively yearned to be on our way? Remember how we gazed in admiration at the high school kids, and gawked at the gawdy splendor of the basket ball and football letter jackets? We used to cheer with all our might at the foot- ball and basketball games, but the teams never seemed, really, to be our own. We knew kids in high school and we always spoke to them, but they really werent our friends Not our buddre buddres Just acquaintances Of course we had classes rn senior high too well anyway gym and chorus The grrls among us thought a lot about the lrp stick they could wear when they were rn high s hool And about the proms they could go to and the heroes they could go out with And the boys they thought about touchdowns and the last mrnute goals that wrn games and they thought about the Queens they would escort to the parties Ind we all thought our own thoughts of presr dents and secretaries and elections and put our elves into the prize positions of course time pa sed and rt was May 42 and graduated on into the land of dreams And the we were One member of our class Mary Jane Vance ex pressed rt this way HIS SOPHOMORE gang of 43 Was the best that there wrll ever Miss Rude the sponsor of the class Drd very well with this brg mass Of one hundred srxty five grrls and boys Who all are learning the art of poise Richard Cederberg the president Rergned over the Sophomore regrment Wrth Ray Thompson rn this group As vrce president of the troup Ruth Whitnah with pleasure Took sophomore dues as secretary-treasurer' For this class party, prime, A time of gayness and cheer sublime. IRST CAME football and you can bet Such boys as they are hard to get Who helped the Indians win each game, And brought eight sophomores into fame. Next came basketball in sports, In which Ted Grimes gave good reports, And any one who saw him play Will sure admit he did o. k. OME SOPHS did in the chorus sing And how they made the rafters ring' They were rn other musical events Whrch brought many beautiful moments When the H1 Y G R play was on Six sophomores from the class were gone In this performance they drd their best And as a result a great success ND LAST but surely not the least The sophs were servers at the feast Of the Senior Junior and the Junior Senior Where they acted on their best demeanor They will be Seniors in 45 So keep your eyes on that Sophomore hrve Well we belong novt Were part of the crowd How do you like rt'P 11468728 li aft Z SOPHOMORE CLASS IDENTIFICATION Richard Cederhurg Pre rdent Ray Thompson Vue lr: rdtnt Ruth Whrtnrh Secretary Tren urer 'IOP PANPI Third Rows Dowmng Blecha Cleaunger Dahl Drrpr ru Drcken Dalhnyqr Dorf Ba tom Cuddy Coffman Barber Srcond Row Cooper Barclay hrsenhut Carl 01 Dr-Young bdvsard Bowman Brad trett Baldfrrson Baht ck Brad haw Anderson hrs! Miss Katharyn Zipse and Miss Kathryn Whitten. With the aid of the sponsors the girls produced many interesting programs and several social events. The social season was ushered in with a tea for new members at the beginning of the school sea- son. The annual Christmas party was a taffy pull. A few burns resulted, but everyone agreed it was great fun Next the grrls were entertained with a pot luck supper at the home of the club president The mothers and senior grrls were gu sts at a party given early in May At this occasion the undercla smen took over and showed the seniors what they could do Three senior girls were award ed Betty Lamp pins for their ser vice rn the club The grrls were Betty Lou Clark Barbara Simonton 'md Lina Yovtell Nearly every girl attended Hospitality Days at the college and they received information to ard them in their food and clothing problems during the rationing periods t HOME NURSING CLUB made its first appear'- ance in MHS this year' under the direction of Miss Martha Brill, our school nurse. Officers elected were Catherine Gundy, presi- dent: Ro Jean Burgwin. vice president: Nina Jean Heterer, secretary: Marjorie Fleming. social chair- man: and Coral Wilson. program chairman. The Kansas Junior Academy of Science meeting was not held this year because of gas rationing and other complications. The young scientists were not overlooked, however, because the Manhattan Kiwanis Club sponsored a local meet and awarded prizes. Winners were Eugene Hawley and Keith Inskeep, who took first place in demonstrations on how to preserve animals in formaldehyde. Jim Farrell placed first in exhibits of photography Ray Hanna was awarded first for indrvrdual excellence rn all fields Bob Stew art took first place rn talks Elected to gurde the club through a successful 42 43 season were three dependable officers Bill Lynch president Harris Clark secretary treas ur er and John Bascom program chair man The club was drvrded into frve groups so that each person could pursue his own freld of interest Radio and Electricity was led by president of the Kansas Junior The drvrson of Ernest Sellers Academy of Science for last year: Aviation by Bob Ratts: Chemistry by Blaine Englundg Biology by Ted Grimes: and Photography by Ken Sellers. Al- ternate weeks the groups met together to take care of business and to have programs with outside speakers. The first big activity of the club in 1943 was the annual lab picnic held in the chemistry lab, amidst the odors brewed up by the chemistry stu- dents all year. The forty or more members that attended cooked picnic food over Bunsen burners. In spite of the sugar shortage, they made ice cream. To make up for the sugar that didn't get in, Doc Parrish, one of the able sponsors, added some special sugar flavoring Regardless of the slightly salty taste four gallons went the way of all good food The second big actrvrty of this year was th science assembly which followed a war time theme The outstanding feature was avratron Bob Ratts displayed hrs gas powered model that flew in a circle around a center pylon and rs mechanically controlled from the ground The club was sponsored this year as last by Mr Parrish Mr Boles and Mr Rogers Maaffg l'0l P-UNI-I rul Rcu mrrrnger rr-rl un rvr ex ram IE n up rum l'ng um lxmnt Prim Allen rr 5 rrmrnn urlrlx uon uw inn: rt r L 1 n tin rrr en inns A 1 nrr. 4 u t 4 1 it re rr Hrrrr rrffrng lwlm rr I lr r ml r L o own rl rbmrg G IOWI-R lANl'I nd avr r o rr n S :ton xnc mrn by Nr our Lwart llrnilu avr R rn rbl d u rrrr h Scum R w Seller Nolder Ratt ewkrrk knight a or Quinlan N1 ll alter Kitts belltl' Sain rr wr e rman age-L Wat ln W ltr 'I lr Wru Rrrl bank SL umm l my in agnu 0 om IN rn prrture Lolburn Ger ac S our W1 on Hom, H ll 37 . . H. Johnson, president of the Manhattan Bible College gave the Baccalau- reate address on May 23. This inspiring talk in- itiated the senior commencement week. The Senior Sneak was a hilarious affair with the students and faculty more than enjoying the all- day vacation. It was a tired but happy bunch of senio1's that crept into bed after that day. The annual senior assembly was May 21. In this program the class will and prophecy were read, much to the chagrin or enjoyment of the student body. The commencement address was given by Dr. Howard T. Hill, head of the Kansas State College Public Speaking Dept. The students then received their hard earned diplomas. Following the commencement exercises, the alumni dance was held in the boys' gym. HE SIGNATURE Dance was held on May 21, in the boy's gym. The students danced the first half of the party, to canned music. During the intermission the 1943 Blue M Queen was in- troduced by Bill Hofsess, editor of this year's an- nual. She was presented with the first copy of the Blue M and then the other students received theirs. The rest of the evening was spent getting autographs of the queen and other classmates. The dance is sponsored by the journalism de- partment. In charge of the committee for the planning of the party was Shirley Miller.
