I f 5 R A quiet, soothing, caressing breeze rustles the leaves of the trees. and lightly sways the blades of grass, glinting dully in the moon- light. The gleaming college lights-have gone out one by one, till only the moon, and the dim rays of a street light, glimmering through the East Arch, relieve the darkness. A deep, peaceful blue sky, shot with innumerable stars. forms a velvety background for the wistful moon. The Quadrangle c1'eeps out from under the heavy blanket of shadow cast by the Administration Building, its walks a battleship gray, dappled by the deeper gray of swaying shadows cast by the trees. The lights of the city. sparkling through the VVest A1'Cll, seem to be reflections of the stars, as in a lake in summertime. A subway train rattles off into the distance. The b1'eeze sighs a little sadly. I illll alone. Four years. I have seen the Quadrangle gleaming like a frosted cake with snow. I have seen it thronged with people, dotted with cardinal red, and nionseigneric purple, with the black of gowns and the multi-colored hoods, and vivid dresses. Freshman-Sophomore battles have swirled and eddied over it. A snake dance of victory has twisted and turned its ecstatically tortuous way through it. Four years. Its Hags have resounded to the footsteps of thou- sands. Some here still, some gone, others gone never to return. High hope and ambition, defeat and despair, happiness and misery, kind- ness and ingratitude. friendship and animosity, excitement and calm, worry and anxiety, victory and achievement . . . it has seen them all. Four years. I sit alone, on the hard stone of the chapel steps, in the moonlight. Four years. I seem to catch a glimpse of the soul of the place . . . these are not just cement and stone, wood and brick and glass . . . this is not just turf and flag, dirt and tree . . . The moon grows pale and d1'ops down and down. The shadows encroach further and further. The breeze sighs mournfully. A sub- way train rattles away into the distance.
