ARCHCONFRATERNITY For its second year at Manhattan Prep, the Archconfraternity of the Divine Child, an organization found in every Christian Brothers' School, continued on its successful way. The purpose of this society is to pray for the spread of Chris- tian education throughout the world. Once again Brother B. Henry was modera- tor. This year the officers were Iohn I. Browne, President: Donald I. Zimmermann, Vice-President: lohn I. Malone, Secretary: Ioseph A. O'Neill, Public-Relation Officer: and Iohn I. Murray, Sacristan. These were aided by the underclass representatives. The majority of the meetings took place in the Students' Chapel. Among the many speakers this year were Father Curtin, a graduate of Manhattan College, Father Steffens, the Chaplain of Manhattan College, Father Wilson, the spiritual director of Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame, Ind., and Father Daniel Egan of Graymore at Garrison, N. Y. The amusing yet religiously spirited presentation given at Christmas merited the praise of the Faculty and students alike. Another of its many successful projects was the toy and clothing drive at Christmas. The graduates of '46 feel confident that the Archconfraternity will continue its work in future years, praying for the spread of Christianity throughout all nations. 74 Top row-Daniel Capozzi, Donald Brundage, Edmund Schwartz, Charles Bohle, Hugh McGuire, Iohn Malone, loseph Nearon, Iames Kiernan, Robert Simms, Albert Newgraden, Alfred Murphy, Thomas Raftery, Robert Barreras. After each quarterly examination a special assembly is held at which the Principal dis- tributes Honor Certificates to all students who qualify as members of the Honor Society. In addition to this a special award is given to the Senior, Iunior, Sophomore and Freshman who has attained the highest mark in his class. The highest mark received this year is 99.22, attained by Ioseph P. Whiteside, a Sophomore, in the first quarterlies. He was closely followed by another Sophomore, Iames M. Flood, who reached 98.63. In the Second Quarter individual honors went to Thomas Skrobala, a Freshman-97.82, Iames M. Flood-96.82 and Ioseph P. Whiteside 96.22. 75 Top row, standing, left to right-Donald I. VARSITY BASKETBALL Although this year's Prep basketball team might not have compared with some of the great teams of other years, it showed a spirit which is traditional of Manhattan Prep. Members of the team who were particularly outstanding on the court were Ted Beliakott, John Reilly, Bill Carroll, Bob Doyle and Hugh Curran. Iohn Reilly and Bill Carroll with their one-handed lay-up shots were certainly well appreci- ated throughout the season. Bob Doyle and Hugh Curran worked together while on the court in such a manner that they too are deserving of praise. It is almost impossible for a team to do without able substitutes. Such men as Iohn Quinn, Iohn Schwartz, George Reitmeier, lack Walsh, Bob Connery and Iohn Lyons certainly did a commendable job. li ever a player will be missed it will be Ted Beliakolf. He was truly ct leader. Although the record made this year was not too impressive, yet the Prep can feel justly proud of the spirit ot cooperation and sportsmanship of its team and spectators. 82 l. VARSITY CROSS-COUNTRY The Cross Country team, though small in size, did fairly well for itself last season. In the beginning of the season, it found itself without a coach, but Bro. Basil generously consented to give his time and succeeded in organizing a strong aggregation. Co-Captain loe Callo was the team's inspiration. He took first place in all of the dual meets and crowned his season by capturing third place in the Private School Championship meet Co-Captain Chick Malone paced the team and usually placed second or third. Sophs Iohn Smith and Tom Egan did excep- tionally well and took second place a few times. Versatile Iohn Odom was right in there battling for third or fourth and greatly aided the Prep's point tally throughout the season. Other boys who were in there all the way and deserve a word of praise were Kev Farrelly, Paul Kilcarr, Ed Callo, and Howie Egan. Iohn Browne, Kelvin Wall and Ed Cadmus were the teams' able managers and Brother Basil's assistants. VARSITY TRACK Although the March winds were still a bit chilly when those long outdoor spikes began to turn up the cinders, the enrollment was one of the largest in Prep history. Coach Gerry Alynwick, who was discharged from the armed forces a short time before. got the team off on an early start. The practical knowledge he received when he ran for the college has made him one of the best coaches the Prep has seen. Ioe Callo, our chief distance man, and Rag Healy and Iohn Schwartz who handled the half and quarter mile respectively, tallied up a good number of the Prep's points in all the meets and lohn Odom took good care of the sprint depart- ment. lUnfortunate1y, these boys were absent when the picture was taken.J Don Zimmerman and Tim Donleavy also deserve a word of praise for the fine job they did on the field events. The boys-all of them-really put everything they had into track this year, and the results clearly show that their efforts were well repaid. 85 FRESHMAN CROSSCOUNTRY Standing, left to right-Francis Watson, Ralph Sepulveda, Robert King, William Wallace. VARSITY SWIMMING I Led by Iohn Murray, one of the outstanding breaststrokers of the CHSAA Swimming League, this year's swimming team has compiled the best record in the history ot the Prep. They have maintained a winning record from the start of the season. Impressive victories were won over All Hallows, Power Memorial, Fieldstone, Xavier, Regis and De La Salle. Ben Corbalis, Captain in '45 and a member ot the team tor tour years, Gerry Winter, Dick Brew, Tom O'Hara. George Crowley, Dan McConviIIe, Fred Wendel, Bill Silvestri and Don McKay are consistent scorers on the squad. The team owes much to the coaching of Mr. Iohn McNamee who took over this year and has done wonders with the team as the season's record shows. 87 Standing, top row, left to right--William Tuite, Theodore Beliakoff, Thomas Lynch Standing, Second rowelohn Sheehan, Manager, Owen Lynch, Daniel Fitzgerald, Fred Wendel, lohn Walsh, Mr. Harry L. VARSITY BASEBALL .1 ...A .L- Although there are only five returning veterans from last year's Varsity, the Baseball Team shows great promise. The team can be counted on to be in there right up to the last game in the fight for the CHSAA crown. This year's mound staff will be led by Iohn Lyons, the Team Captain. On Iohn's strong right arm will rest many of our hopes and he can be counted on to come through as he has done in the past. . Among the returning lettermen are Tom Lynch, first base: Iimrny Bartlett, second base: George Reitmeier, short: and Owen Lynch in center field. lohn Quinn looks good around third base and it looks as if Bill Keleghan will fill one of the outfield posts. Mario Scolaro, lohn Cleary, and Bill Tuite will have a share in the mound chores. Ben Corbalis will probably work behind the bat.
