Multiple-option programs of study in conjunction with Kansas State University enable Christian students to prepare for lives of service for Christ in a wide variety of profes- sions - both church-related and non-church-related. Every student, regardless of his professional goals, prepares for the vocation of serving Christ. The stu- dent body is greatly enlarged; the campus now includes nearly four city blocks, adjacent to Kansas State University; and the challenge of preparing a versatile ministry for the church is before us! 43 Loe a = € f 1968 Pry, MANHATTAN BIBLE COLLEGE pis aa AR, oi MANHATTAN BIBLE COLLEGE 1969 L Sieg! crloets oy SF ) PNY N S q) S aS id ay T. Almost three hundred students populated the classrooms. The term began with Freshman Orientation, com- plete with tours, testing, food, softball, a talent show, and a special faculty ‘‘opera’’ presentation, The Grasshopper'’. Shem Taggart, the new music professor, was introduced. In place of the faculty open house, MCC Women hosted an ice cream social (pictured on page seven), moderated by Denny Glenn. Both faculty and stu- dents participated in a ‘'scrumpdillyshus'’ evening, including a ''melodrama'', readings, ragtime piano, the faculty quartet, sketches, devotions by Shem Taggart, and gallons of heavenly home-made ice cream. Shortly after the end of freshman probation came Missions Emphasis Week (September 28-30, 1976), featuring slides, seminars, and sermons from Richard Hicks (campus minister in Sao Paulo, Brazil), David Filbeck (of Pioneer Bible Translators), and Duane King (of Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, lowa). This year's theme was ‘'Ambassadors for Christ.'' On October 12-14, Harry Ropp, director of Mission to Mormons, spoke on the growing cult of Mormonism. Session number one of Junior-Senior Days was held on October 14-15. Approximately two weeks later, Gerald Gibson brought stirring, fast-paced messages to the annual campus revival. November 5 was the date of the Benefit Dinner. Senator Mark Hatfield spoke, and Kim Clowe's Cel- ebration Singers provided the evening's entertain- ment. Session number two of Junior-Senior Days included a program with emcee John Welter. Special guests included Linda Hall, former Miss Kansas; and Donna Brown, a gospel singer. President Lown was the speaker for the evening. The last event for Novem- ber was the Standard Publishing Company Idea Work- shop, a program which substituted for the Athearn lectures. Close behind the Winter Banquet (December 3) was the Christmas Concert (December 9), performed by the Celebration Singers, the Inspiration Ringers, the brass choir, and the New Creation (the new women's chorus, under the direction of Professor Shem Tag- gart). The Ringers held their own concert, the Christmas Ring, on December 11 and 12. The spring semester began as anything but spring, but the sub-zero temperatures were tolerated. The big ''warm spell' in February was in the form of the T. H. Johnson Memorial Preaching Convention, the theme of which was ''The Golden Age for Proclama- tion''. W. F. Lown, Kenneth Cable, Barbara Hamm, James Carr, Knofel Staton, Ed Towne, Mar- tha Amlong, and Leonard Wymore headlined the convention, although Leonard Wymore became ill and had President Lown to substitute. Workshops were held by Knofel Staton, Ed Towne, Joan Leach, Roy Wheeler, Kenneth Cable, Carol Hieronymus, Gene Carlson, and Charles Gresham. Moderators, singers, accompanists, babysitters, and the MCC Women all contributed to a highly successful convention. Less than one week later, the Celebration Singers performed the praise drama ‘'Beginnings'', utilizing twenty-two instruments (including an anvil, gong, and bell tree), mime, and interpretative dance to tell the story of the creation and the life of Christ. For Spring Break, many students headed for Horn Creek Ranch (in Westcliffe, Colorado), the ideal place to eat well, play hard, and grow closer to the Lord. Lessons were brought by Hiram Cassel, Dr. Leach, and Charles Cook. The Women's World Retreat was held on March 25. One week later, prospective students converged on the campus for MCC Days, a two-day encounter with MCC and God's Word through dinner theater, preaching, and discovery sessions. On the program were Don Wilson, Les Christie, Dean Burton, Hiram and Marcy Cassel, Bob Chitwood, James Cunning- ham, Tom Hawks, Dick Jorgenson, W. F. Lown, Jim McElroy, and David Roadcup. On April 1, 1977, faculty and administration were roused from sleep at 5:30 a.m., arrested, and deliv- ered to the Campus Center to sing for their breakfast and await trial. Some faculty members had to see impersonations of their own classes, e.g., the banana-peel choir. The entire occasion was another well-remembered Skip Day. Professors Betty Aldridge, Joan Leach, Dale Aldridge, and others led the third annual Christian Education Seminar, held April 16 and 23. A new feature was a series of demonstration classes. Socially, the school year ended with the Spring Banquet (with speaker Jim McElroy), the Alumni- Senior Banquet (with speaker George Wood), and the Senior-Faculty-Staff Banquet. Musically, the Spring Tour Home Concert provided the finale; in addition, the Singers and Ringers produced another record album, ''Go Out with Joy'', named for the theme of this year's tour. New Creation, which toured during the year, gave a joint concert with the brass and recorder ensembles. In sports, MCC fared fairly well, compiling a 6 4 soccer record, a 9 14 basketball record, and a 4 4 baseball record. In league tournaments women placed first in tennis; men were consolation winners. In golf, men placed fourth. In bowling, women placed first; men, second. Off campus, highlights included KSU appearances by Josh McDowell and by Truth. Incidentally, amid all the activity, regular classes and chapels were held. After the school year had concluded, the Singers and Ringers went east for their tour, including a per- formance on the Capitol steps in Washington, D.C.; the Ringers had their own tour and held workshops at the North American Convention; Dennis Johnson acquired an assistant, Charles Smith; summer school began; and work-study crews undertook the current projects to improve the campus; e.g., the College Service Center in Joliffe Hall, ‘'stoning’' the music building, converting 1446 Fairchild into radio and drama rooms, and moving Dr. Virgil Warren (MCC's newest faculty member) into his office. MCC has grown to include ninety percent of a four-block area, excluding newly-acquired Sander- son Hall and 1415 Fairchild. In 1975 and 1976, Buckles’ house and the three houses west were razed to allow for expansion. The Spirit of ‘77 has assumed many forms, but basically it is the same as that of the preceding forty-nine years - the spirit of proclaiming the Word of God. Praise Him for working through MCC's administration, staff, faculty, students, and sup- porters for fifty years. 69 70 0 ree em mS YESTERDAY ONCE MORE Page 70: Dale Hillard and Rex Jones, Mr. and Mrs. James Carr, Dr. Glenn Cunning- ham, Joe Secrest, James Morgan, Wanda Morgan, Harry Baird, Arthur Edwards, Bob Owens, Clarence Stanke.
