RESULTS OF 1938 TRACK SEASON WITH a group of inexperienced boys competing for positions on the squad, the 1939 Tiger track team was an outstanding athletic surprise of the year. After only two hard workouts behind them, the trackmen invaded Altus for the Southwestern conference track and field meet. The Tigers, considered the bottom unheard of thing when they came through in grand style. the conference. team at the meet, did an to capture second place in The trackmen and the FOSTER JOHNSON-First in dashg second in 220-yard rung of first place 880-yard relay teamg total number of points, 914. 100-yard member JODIE HOGUE--First in hop, step, and jump: member of winning 880-yard relay team: total number of points, 615. L BATES Fourth in 100 yard dash second in 440 yard run fourth rn shot put total number of points 7 events in which they participated are as follows: CLAUDE SMITH-Second in 880-yard rung member of second place mile relay teamg total number of points, 32. CLYDE SMITH-Fourth in mile run: mem- ber of mile relayg total number of points. iii. The four members of the 880-yard relay team that won first place were Hogue, Johnson. Bates, and Warren. The second place mile relay team mem- bers were Long. Claude Smith, Clyde Smith. and Bates. In the Greer county track and field meet, the Tigers took first place in class A for boys by scoring more points than all other class A boys teams entered INTRAIVIURALS DUE to the lack of a suitable opening in the Tiger schedule there were no intra mural football games this year The intramural basketball tournament which was held rn March was one of the most exciting school contests of the year Although the Sophomores and Junior B teams were eliminated in the early rounds of the tournament the more experienced Junior A beam and the Seniors defeated all their opponents to meet rn the finals This game was the most thrilling of the tournament with both teams playing bang up ball Although the seniors were on the short end of the score most of the game they made a desperate last minute rally to overcome a six point lead only to be nosed out 25 to 24 1Contmued on next page?
