The defeat at the hand of Elk City the following week was deserved as the Mangum eleven failed to show the class which was to be expected of them. Mane gum won the toss and chose to receive. On the kickfoff Mangum returned twen- ty yards. On an end run Sims gained fifteen yards. McKinney gained twenty- five. but Nlangum lost the ball on the fumble. Elk City directed their plays toward the line Plunge followed plunge until Mangum held for downs on her own two yard line Mangum punted and Elk City again returned to the two yard line and again Mangum held In this way the game ran until the last of the sec ond quarter when Elk City plunged the line for the first touchdown made against the Manf um team this season Mangum goal was crossed three times and Elk City failing to kick goal the score stood I8 to 0 'Vlangum felt greatly the absence of Ly on Heatly and Lovett The greatest event of the season was the defeat of Cordell I2 to 6 on out home grounds The victory was unlooked for after the defeat at Elk City and Cordell being a quarter the ball every foot But spectacular pass strong contender for the state championship During the first stayed in the center of the field with both teams fighting for at the opening of the second quarter Cordell completed the most ever made in Mangum carrying the ball over on the plav Man gum received and carried the ball to Cordell s twenty yard line Cordell held for downs Lyons then recovered a fumble and made a touchdown making the score siic to six Eive minutes later Overton plunged the line for the second touchdown Cordell braced and held for the rest of the game but was outplav ed and outgeneraled Cordell failed to gain either through the lines or around the ends their gains being made on the short forward pass The feature ofthe game was the playing of Overton who made long gains around the ends and through the heavy Cordell lines As Cordell had defeated Hobait 56 to 0 Mangum expected an easy victory oy er the team of that city But over confidence and carelessness caused a defeat for Mangum of 27 to 7 Mangum s lone touchdown resulted from a seventy yard run by Sims and a pass to Heatly Mangum made a bad start losing the ball on downs after which Hobart gained at will through the lines The next game was with Granite where Mangum came back in great style defeating that team 56 to 0 This game did much to restore confidence and pre pare Mangum for the Thanksgiving day game The Thanksgiving day game was matched with a team supposed to be out of Mangums class The day was ideal and the Southwestern State Normal School was defeated 76 to 0 before the largest crowd ever assembled in Mangum at a football game and went a long way towards making the season the most successful in the history of the Mangum High School Mangum Mangum Elk City Mangum Hobart Gran te Mangum GAMES Frederick Elk City Mangum Cordell Mangum Mangum S W State Normal 64 ,A , . X Jokes is ended four years of effort are oxerf' Is it because he has received all the school offers that he has obtained all there is to be had that he has in his head all the substance of each book from cover to cover? No this is not the case You may refer to the catalogue and find courses not exen touched by those thus marked But he has grasped one thought here another there and draws a logical conclusion of his own from these two H now realizes that life has a serious side Although outside appearances con tradicting he is planning in just what way to make the attack He has become more cultured and more refined in his thoughts more exact more deliberate in his actions He is now within striking distance of what he will be He has laid the foundation of a man upon which many types could be built But thcre is but one for him He concentrates his force and energy digs up new material with those tools which he has at his disposal and builds a man independent self reliant one who sees the bright side as well as the dark side a lover of all things beautiful who finds good in evil and as Emerson has it Whois prepared to make not a man of himself but the best of the man God made H INOCTLRINAL EL HOES OF THE M H S One evening as I passed the High School building it looked so lonesome and supernatural that I entered in search of adventure As I mounted the stairs I heard the old gong croaking about its sore throat and on reaching the second floor I was just in time to hear the rusty electric Ilcm I opened the door of Mr Wards office and to my horror found the gold pen and the mkwell committing matrimony The Rev Rule a straight laced man performed the ceremony and a quire of note paper accompanied by a rub ber band furnished the music The bride wore a pearl white gown and the groom wore conventional black Loud voices attracted me to the study hall where I found the volumes of reference works in the front of the room in a spirited discourse on What makes the wild cat wlldg I next entered Mrs Macs room fin the Math roomj where I found the yard stick and compass in a heated debate the question being Resolved that a straight line is more beautiful than a curved one In Miss Ward s room I heard echoes of voices which I recognized as Emily Hoovers Lottie Webers and Louella Smiths shouting Vini vidi vici I dared not enter because I feared getting stabbed three and twenty times On entering the English room I beheld Shakespeare descending from his place on the wall solemnly swearing that he would no longer hang with Bacon I next mounted the stairs to the Auditorium here I witnessed the most ghostly scene of all The old piano poured forth wierd music and on the stage noiselessly danced many ghosthke apparitions which I knew to be Miss Gurney and her Glee Club girls with a few masculine favorites of the club The two most graceful dancers who were receiving the most attention I recognized as Hattie Mae Lyon and Algy Hardin I soon tired of this spectacle and began de scendmg the stairs As I was passing the study hall I heard the echoes of a heavenly funearthlyj voice exclaim Let us be a little more quiet please there is too much confusion 84 . 1 Y ' Y 'Y - . s H I I . 7 i . . .
