THE 1982 SEAGULLS FLIGHT maxbwnm mums scuooL MANDEVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL MR. MARTIN SIMMONS PRINCIPAL Foreword The 1981-82 Seagull has been designed to portray in words and pictures our times at Mandeville middle School this year. The staff has strived to present to you, the students, a collection of events and experience which will be important memories in the years to come. In pictures, you will find play and excitement, hardwork, success and even some failure, but it is a combination of these events that have made up our yearbook. Table Of Contents Dedication Our Principal From Yesterday-To Today School Helpers Special Teachers 4-H Club Classes School Happenings Autographs We Dedicate We are fortunate to have the continuing support of our students, parents. Their membership and involvement in our schooPs PTA has greatly benefited our school. Through the years, this group of dedicated parents has contributed in numerous ways to the welfare of our school. Improvements in our schoolis physical plant have been financed through the effects of the PTA. Students have enjoyed the playground equipment, nature trail, and outdoor classroom made possible with their help. Our schoolis academic environment has been enhanced by PTA donations of teaching materials and audio-Visual aids. PTA - sponsored activities provide teacher assistants and tutors in the classroom. This group serves as a vital link between school personnel and parents. The 1981-82 Seagullis Flight is dedicated to our PTA. Our Principal Piloting the Seagullst for the past 13 years has been our principal, Martin A. Simmons. A native of Louisiana, he has been a teacher and basketball coach of Mandeville High School, principal at Mandeville High School, and Director at the Edu- cation Center. Not just content to sit behind the desk, Mr. Simmons tries to make the rounds to our class- rooms. Often, he becomes and remains an eager participant in whateverts happening. Many of the students find a sympathetic ear in the principalts office. Mr. Simmons has a beautiful family that sup- ports his every move. He is married to Brunette Smith Simmons, with one daughter tB:k - Zt and one new grandaughter tJilD. From Yesterday ----- To Today Mrs. Conerly and Ms. Clairain have been teachers at Mandeville Middle School since its begin- ning. They are sharing their experiences and the schooPs changes with us. Mrs. Conerly states: I started teaching at Mandeville Middle School in 1969. At that time we had a one wing building and eight teachers. My teaching assignment was Social Studies. Later, the enrollment increased to a point where we had to enlarge our school building and faculty. Since the increase in enrollment, there were changes in the teaching assignments. We began team teaching. I taught math, Science and Social Studies. Since I have taught at Mandeville Middle, my teaching assignments, grade level, and subject matter have changed several times. Presently I am teaching a variety of subjects on the 5th grade level. Truly, we have grown in many ways. Certainly, there have been improvements in many areas of our educational endeavors. I consider it fortunate to have worked under Mr. Simmons as principal. The parents have been very concerned and considerate to me while I have been working here. Miss Clairain says that when she first applied for a local teaching position, Mr. Clanton asked her if she wanted to teach in Mandeville Middle School. She tthought he said Mandeville Mental School! She began as a Language Arts teacher for 5th 8: 6th grades. At that time the school was only 5th graders. However, she says it was very interesting; to watch her 5th graders mature into 7th graders, a privilege lost when 6th and 7th graders relocated. At present, she teaches 5th grade Math, Science and Social Studies as well as a variety of minor subjects. She enjoys her work 8: feels privileged to work with teachers 8: pupils of such high quality. She is proud of the high standards maintained by the parents in the community.
