It seems like only yesterday that we were eager fresh- men, looking forward to four years of high school life. I'll never forget how huge and mystifying West looked when we first entered. Oh, I know! After we became acquainted with our classmates, we began to settle down and think that we were becoming part of the student body, when we were informed that we would be fortunate enough to have a Freshman Day. Do you remember how comical every- one looked? Even though we dreaded the day, we dis- covered that it was all in good fun. lt's too bad that we were the last class to have a Freshman Day. The following classes would have enjoyed it as much as we did. After Freshman Day, our class presented a Fresh- man Talent Day, with all the talented members of our class taking part. Oh, yes, Freshman Day was a lot of fun! After that, things seemed to quiet down until Christmas time when everyone began to think of the Christmas Semi-Formal, Silver Bells, sponsored by the Players. That was the first formal for many of us, and everyone who went en- joyed himself. After Christmas, the Freshman girls tried out for Junior Varsity Cheerleading, and Diane Des- rochers, Roslie Janosz, Lorraine Janelle, Beverly Con- way, Anne Zdon, and Linda Delisle were chosen to rep- resent us. Rosalie was later chosen as a member of the Varsity Cheerleaders. Priscilla Jameson had been for- tunate enough to be chosen during the football season to fill a vacancy in the Varsity Cheering Squad. Wasn't that the first year that West had gone to the Basketball Tournament in a long time? It was a heart- breaking game when West played Concord and lost by only one point. Our class, however, was very proud of Ken Wade, the only Freshman to make the Varsity Bas- ketball team. We also placed two members of our class on the Football Team. John Middleton and Dick Vaillan- court received their Varsity letters at an assembly in the team's honor. Do you remember the many activities that took place that spring, Ginny? Oh, yes, there were certainly many events taking place that spring. The Cheerleaders sponsored their seventh annual Fashion Show with Roslie Janosz and Priscilla Jameson taking part, the National Honor Society spon- sored their annual Spelling Bee, with Diana Lacroix win- ning the class championship, the Players and the Musical Department presented the Musical Miss Starlightg and the year came to a close with the first West Week spon- sored by the Student Council. The summer vacation flew by all too quickly and soon, we were Sophomores, Wise F ools they say, hav- ing fun confusing the incoming Freshmen. I think the event which I remember most in our sophomore year was the Basketball Tournament at Durham when West, the team in eighth place, defeated Bradley, the team in first place, by a score of 54 to 48. That game was really thrilling! That was also the year that the first Broadway Musical, On The Town, was presented. Many of our classmates were in the cast which numbered close to one hundred. Didn't Diane Desrochers sell the most tickets to the Musical? She really gave our class a boost in the ticket- selling competition. We showed the upperclassmen when our class won the competition. Wasn't that the year that the Foreign Language Club presented their Foreign Language Entertainment at night? The skit portraying Goldilocks and the Three Bears was cute, and Elaine Mendzela was an adorable Goldilocks. That was also the first year that the F.T.A. undertook the responsibility of sponsoring the Christmas Semi-Formal. The theme that year was Mistletoe Ball, and everyone enjoyed the sprigs of mistletoe placed con- spicuously in the auditorium. Can you remember any of the other activities, Ginny? No, everything seems hazy, except the fact that it was 37 an enjoyable year. Then our Junior year started. We didn't waste much time in choosing our class officers. They were Ken Wade, President: Dick Vaillancourt, Vice-Presidentg Priscilla Jameson, Secretary: and Elaine Edwards, Treas- urer, with Mr. Stone as our Class Adviser. We sure had lots of activities that year, Ginny. I know we'll never forget the big production of Silk Stockings in which quite a few members of our class took part. Yes, and the one big event around Christmas which I'll always remember is the semi-formal Christmas Fantasy, held at the Gossler School. That was certainly successful. Wasn't that the year Harry Scltoepf, a member of our class, won first prize in the General Motors Fisher Body Craftsmans Guild Model Car Competition? Yes, he won a trophy which was presented to him at an assembly in our Senior year. That was also the year in which the following mem- bers of our class were chosen to attend Girls' and Boys' State at Durham: Sandra Bowers, Roslie Janosz, Diane Desrochers, Robert Mulroy, Philip Knoettner, Bob Mc- Mahon, Mike Smith, and Mike Theall. They had a wonderful time. The annual cheerleaders' fashion show was a big suc- cess, as usual. Taking part in Sugar Magic were Priscilla Jameson, Roslie Janosz, and Diane Desrochers. Ginny, you must remember the vigorous campaigning for Student Council offices in that year. The candidates really went all out with posters, slogans, buttons, and their speeches at an assembly. Mike Smith was elected President: Paul Barrett, Vice-President: Ann Zdon, Sec- retary: and Diane Desrochers, Treasurer. Oh, yes, I remember. And that was the year ten members were admitted into the National Honor So- ciety: Sandra Bowers, Philip Knoettner, Ken Wade, Roslie Janosz, Virginia Noyes, Cynthia Hobbs, Mike Theall, Bonnie Bctley, Diane Desrochers, and Priscilla Jameson. The members then elected their officers: President, Philip Knoettnerg Vice-President, Bonnie Betley: Secre- tary, Roslie Janoszg and Treasurer, Cynthia Hobbs. I remember the band concert that year, don't you, Marion? It was put on by the West High School Band with Ronnie Sandmann, Bob McMahon, Ken Wenzel, Donald Edwards. Carl Goedecke, Les Golrrell, and Mike Smith representing our class. l Yes, it was very successful. Of course, the outstanding event of the year was our Junior Prom held at West High School on May 17. I doubt if anyone will forget that wonderful night which was a happy ending to our busy Junior year. , I guess it was a happy ending. Well, the following year started off much the same as our Junior year, ex- cept that we had a new principal, Mr. Andrew M. Boland. l Of course, now that we were Seniorsfwe had to elect our class officers: President, Leslie Gorrellg Vice-Presi- dent, Ken Wade: Secretary, Priscilla' Jameson: and Treasurer, Elaine Edwards, with Mr. Stone as our Class Adviser. Golly, when I think about it, our Senior year was as busy, or even more so, as our first three years. It wasn't very long before the National Honor Society accepted nine new members into its order: Elaine Edwards, Marion Seavey, Jane Kuehn, Carl Goedecke, Bill Weaver, Bill Jacobson, Donald Edwards, Bob McMahon, and Mike Smith. The annual semi-formal at Christmas, Winter Won- derland, sponsored by the F.T.A., was held at West High School. It really was fun, right, Ginny? It sure was. Another important event was the annual Cheerleaders' Fashion Show, this year entitled Once Upon a Fashion. Taking part in it were Priscilla Jameson, Linda Delisle, Sandra Bowers, Diane Des- rochers, Bonnie Betley, and Debbie King. The cheerleaders gained more attention when they went to Nashua and returned home with a trophy for winning first prize in a cheerleading contest there. The senior girls who took part in the contest were Priscilla Jameson and Linda Delisle. Because of an addition being built onto the school, it was impossible to put on as large a production as in the past few years. But You Can't Take It With You proved to be just as successful. ' I doubt if anyone will ever forget our Senior Banquet and Reception. There could have been no better way in which to end our four years at West High. Although these times are now in the past, the many pleasant memories will always remain with us. Our Class Adviser MR. ROBERT W. STONE We wish to thank Mr. Stone for the help and guidance he has given us in his capacity as Adviser to the Class of 1959. He has aided us in numerous difficult situations with his wisdom and understanding. He has our respect, and we hope that we shall continue to justify the confidence he has shown in us. MR. KENRICK C. BEAN And finally to Mr. Bean, who was principal during our underclass days. we extend hemty wishes for good health and happiness on his retirement from teaching and best wishes for success in his new posi- tion as Assistant Executive Secretary of the New Hampshire Educa- tion Association. v Q V S L 2 9... f A W Efgist will-ggzi .
