our mental physical and spiritual development here. Some of us may aspire to create engineering master preces to undertake medical research that wrll save the lrxes of mrllrons or to be the author of lrterary gems Others hope to become successful businessmen and women and there may be those who hope to improve the lrvrng condrtrons of the world through polrtrcal or spiritual leadershrp These are just a tew of our dreams We do not hesitate to hope for the fulfillment of such hrgh asprratrons because we have learned that rn America success rs attainable for those who aspire Some of us wrll find our paths to achievement comparatrwely easy to follow but for others the road may be harder and longer We must have courage and farth rn our dreams for these are not the fleeting dreams of childhood but the sturdrer richer more purposeful dreams of youth not to be measured wrth old g Constance Foley PLAYING THE GAME OF LIFE Have you ever watched an exerting sports event and become so enthusrastrc at the quick movrng ac tron that you felt an urge to play the game? Stop a mrnute however to think of all the sacrrlices that a player must make and of the long hours of trarnrng he has to undergo to be able to play the game success fully He must think of himself not as an rndrvrdual but as a single cog rn the smooth workrng wheel of team work The true sportsman must have self con trol he must be able to accept vrctory or defeat wrth a frrendly and spontaneous grrn To be an actrxe partrclpant and not just a member of the team the to see the game through to the Hnrshrng gun He must be wrllrng to wrn the game honestly always rem m berrng that cardinal pornt of sportsmanshrp trust worthiness There IS nothing so enjoyable or heart warming as the smile of vrctory after playing a hard fought game This rs the glowrng reward for hrs many hours of back breaking trarnrng and for hrs too nu merous sacrrhces which rn any athletes oprnron r better than gold Playing the game of lrfe rs like playing any com petrtrve game To be abl to play rt successfully one must make just as many saerrfiees and spend just as many hours of trarnrng as does an athlete The player rn the game of lrfe cannot be an rsolatronrst he must mmgle wrth the multitude rn order to proxe hrs worth He must work rn harmony wrth the rest of hrs fellow workers always taking an actrve part not just stand ing on the srdelrnes watching lrfe go by He must have the wrll power and the tenacity to complete the task that he has started Mistakes should not drs PAGE TWENTY TWO courage him' for it has been written that the only two classes of people who dont make mistakes are the dead and the unborn He should never accept mrs takes as final but should organize hrs faculties rn order to trrumph over all odds To quote Wrllram George ordan rn hrs essay Running Away From Lrfe To fight lrfe s battles one must keep close to the firing lme ust as the athlete must continue hrs trarnrng and practice so the player rn the game of lrfe must con trnue hrs educatron for educatron rs a lrfe long process If the player rn the game of lrfe has a broad and diversified educatron he will be an actrve partr crpant rn lrfe and therefore wrll be able to make more worthwhrle contrrbutrons to rt He can never truly measure the rewards of educatron rn money for they are rmmeasurably more valuable than gold A baseball player who gets only as far as thrrd base never scores Lrkewrse a player rn the game of lrfe who stops on thrrd never succeeds for success rs not measured rn thrrd base runs May that sprrrt of youth that dwells rn the mrnds and hearts of the boys and grrls of 1949 drrect them as they play the game of lrfe so that they may meet the changes that progress brrngs Amerrcas strength ts youth Robert Beecleman BUILDING WITH HEART AND MIND IS lfll One hundred years ago the 1849ers traveled slowly and painfully across our young country to the far West rn quest of treasure Some went solelv for the love of gold others went because they hoped to one hundred years that have pass d srnce that trme our country has gradually become materralrstrc more rnterested rn the frurts of wealth than rn the sprrrtual asp cts of lrfe Today 1949 we are burldrng but wrth an entrrely different purpose rn mrnd from that of those early proneers We are burldrng wrth our hearts and our mrnds All present day phrloso phers and leaders of youth are trying to instill rn the mrnds of young and old especrally rn youth the value of sprrrtual burldrng for rn the future we shall either strengthen or weaken our country We are begrnnrng to realize that pleasure luxury and rrches tend to weak n character and thus weaken our na tron Hardshrp trral and restrrctron grve new vrtal ity to character and therefore strengthen our natron What do we mean by burldrng wrth our heart?
