Seniors Attended Citizenship Functions Nine young men from Manchester had the honor of attending the l978 American Legion Boy s State at Rider College for a week last spring. There they got to participate in a complete mock state government. The participants were assigned into counties which the mayor and other authorities were elected who would help to run the county and city. There was also an election for state gover- nor, which included political parties campaigns posters and speeches. The boys agreed they had an enjoyable time and learned a lot about their state government functions. It should be noted that the 9l0 boys there ate well consuming three and a half tons of food a day or a total of twenty-four tons in a week! Girl s State allows 500 girls from all over New Jersey to join together at Douglass College to form a government. Last year from June twenty-fifth to June thirtieth three senior girls were chosen from Manchester to attend the New Jersey Girl s State. Girl s State is supposed to teach these girls about politics and the formation of our government. Accordingly it is not so as quoted from Deb DeVoogd. Girl s State was excellent for the social aspects, but. as far as anything else . . . I learned very little about the government and how they run it. When you think about it though you cannot form a proper government in five days so you might only consider Girl s State as an adventure in experience. were then divided into two cities in which they would live. Then , Girl's State participants: Front, First Row: Muriel Faasse, Ellen Nahassg Second Row: Marilyn VanGrouw, Patty Gras, Mary Dell'Aquila, Deb DeVoogd. Boy's State participants: Front, First Row: Henry Stansfield, Ron Ferriola, Pete Orbeg Second Row: Jim Coscia, Gus DeBlasio, John Barath, Darren Gilmore, Stew Lampe, John Mayerg Third Row: Bruce Terwilliger, Larry Lavooy, Dave Petrullo, Jim Kurpick, Tony Falone. ames in the News Carl Zeitlinger ranked in the top three percent of over one million seniors who were eligible for the National Merit Scholarship. Manchester should be very proud of his outstanding achievement. Five senior girls. Sandy Bogert. Anne Dittamo, lvy Frignoca, Philomena Graziano, and Lisa Marino, were nominated for the Citizenship Award. The girls had to write letters and the finalists were chosen by these. The two final- ists were lvy Frignoca and Phil Graziano. Congratulations to all five girls for their participation in activities here at Manchester.
