I :sms 'vo DEAR MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1977: Kahlil Gibran, the well-known Lebanese poet, philosopher, and artist, de- scribes to parents their children as living arrows . . . sent forth . . . upon the path of the infinite. It is in nearly the same spirit that we, the administrators of Manchester Regional High School, send you forth, for we have stood in the place of your parents for the past four years. You came to us as freshmen, possessing the gift of reason. During your years with us, we and the teachers at Manchester have tried to show you the truth of Gibranis thoughts on reason: Reason is a prudent minister, a loyal guide, and a wise counsellor. Reason is light in darkness, as anger is darkness amidst light. Be wise-let reason, not impulse be your guide. We have worked also to pro- vide you with the necessary concomitant of reason, namely, knowledge. Yet be mindful that even if reason be at your side, she is helpless without the aid of knowledgef Gibran says, 'Without her blood-sister, knowledge, reason is like houseless poverty, and knowledge without reason is like a house unguardedf' In your years at Manchester each of you has acquired knowledge to accom- pany your native gift of reason according to your ability and willingness. It is time now to go forth on your individual paths to use your gifts and acquisitions for the betterment of yourself and the world. Robert Louis Stevenson has well articulated his view of life: To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life. You could do worse than to adopt this view for your own, but whatever your view of the end of life, we hope we have provided you with appropriate means to accomplish it. Thus, we send you forth with all good wishes and hopes for your success and happiness in all your future endeavors. We wish you strength, courage, and faith, for you have many miles to go before you sleep. Affectionately, ' E , JL..-A Robert E. Spreen, Principal MJ j Richard R. Grandey, Administrative Assistant
