And do you know my “silly sister” Laura Zaglio? She is so sweet, and my family too. Why does AFS want its students to leave America? That is my nightmare! | learn so many things everyday at school, with the clubs, with my friends, and with my new family. Who knows when | can come again? Here in Manchester, | am living the greatest ex- perience in my life. I'll never forget each of you my new friends, believe me. C’est triste d’avoir 4 abandonner tous ceux qu’on aime... Si vous passez un jour par la France, n’hesitez pas a venir me voir; je vous attends... Bernadette Fievet So. You find yourself in a something new. Funny how sometimes a guy has to travel halfway around the world and back before he can understand something as simple as another person. Yes, you are an individual, someone yourself—apart, special; but suddenly you've discovered that, too, you are human, a member of a larger abstraction. When you can’t understand what he’s saying to you, you watch his face, his hands, his shrugs; you laugh when he laughs (even if you don’t get it), share his emotions—and there it is: heck, he acts the same as any and all other people, and so do you, basically. A.F.S. is friends and it’s feelings; it’s climbing a Swiss mountain or talking politics in a language you barely understand. It’s an attitude. Crowded rooms, different people, and personal thoughts; a new expression of yourself. It’s neat. Ja, rman muss etwas lernen, und das ist fest an die Zukunft yu glauben. Doug Pastel The understanding and friendship between nations, is one of the main purposes of the American Field Service (AFS). | have had the honor of representing my country, Ecuador, here in Manchester, and I’m thankful to all the people of this town and especially to my schoolmates, for helping me to work as an AFSer. The warm and true friendship that | have found here will live in my memory and in my heart for all my life. | will never forget you and | hope you’ll never forget me.
