In order to add variety and exemplify the creative talents of M.H.S. students, we chose the theme Textures and Panels, Throughout the book we have sought to present the textures one comes into contact with every day — from the smooth surface of a desk, to the dusty powder of chalk, and the rough permanence of concrete walls. We hope that you will enjoy and “feel” the theme of this year’s book. We would like to thank a few people without whom this book would not have been possible. The Man- chester Evening Herald photographers Mr. Pinto, Mr. Ofiara, and Mr. Saternis and Loring Studio have taken many of the pictures that appear in the book. Somanhis co-editors, Jane and Nancy Our advisor, Mr. Jay R. Stager and Rodman Stewart, a student photographer have also provided numerous pictures. We would especially like to thank Mr. Wil- liam Coe for allowing us to use his colored picture the direction of Mrs. Grace Kunz who solicited ads for this years’ book. We are grateful to the members of the Somanhis Staff, and the Art Staff for all the time and effort they contributed to this year’s book. of the school which appears on the end sheets. During my stay | became the third daughter in the home of Tahsin Ozcan, a department store owner in the port city of Mersin on the Mediterranean Sea. The rest of my Turkish family consists of my mother, Anne, my sisters, Neila, 18, and Neyran, 13, and my brother, Necdet, 16. Throughout my summer | was constantly impressed by the natural beauty of every part of Turkey, the extreme patriotism of the Turks, and their boundless hospitality. | can truthfully say that every Turk | met seemed to want and try to do everything possible to make my stay a more pleasant one, Their efforts were certaintly very effective, because | literally “fell in love” with Turkey and am determined to go back there someday. My summer wouldn‘t have been possible without the contributions made to the American Field Service by students, teachers, and the people of Manchester. Please accept my deepest, most grateful thanks. | will never, ever forget it! Cok, gok tesikir ederini, Holly Hooker Sally Chapin in Germany Sally Chapin of Manchester High School traveled to Germany in her junior year (1963-1964) under the auspices of the International Christian Youth Ex- change. To prepare for her journey, Sally spent four months learning German at Vidil-Rock School of Languages, and after arriving in Germany, spent an- other month improving her proficiency in the language. In mid-August, Sally met her adopted family, the Klaus-Jergen Schultzes, who wisked her off to summer vacation in Trento, Italy. Once back in Germany, she began school and occasionally saw Harald Muehlberger, foreign exchange student to M.H.S. two years ago. She bicycled up hills, across green countrysides, viewing always the Black Forest, the region in which she was staying. She saw the Gothic cathedral of Cologne, visited composers’ homes, and at Christmas attended a candle-light service. In January she made her home with Dr. and Mrs. Georg Kronberger of Kassel, a town only 10 to 15 miles from East Germany. A fortunate girl, Sally has probably spent her most formative year in Germany as a representative of the U.S.A. Sally says to all of you at M.H.S.... “Gruss Gott” (God’s Greeting) ROW 1: |. It was formed because of student interest in folk music. If is an informal organization which meets twice a month in the Choral room. The club is advised and entertained by Mr. David Monahan and Mr, Lawrence Perry who are ethnic folk enthusiasts. A typical meeting consists of individual performances accompanied by gui- tars and banjos and group singing where everyone takes part. yynen ofUGents Vet Together at aA ” tnem strate A.
