There are many things which constitute our life at Manchester High School. After a quick glance, one could say that Manchester High School is merely a modern brick building, designed to be used as a school. But there is something more than this; something that makes Manchester High School unique. This is the per- sonality of the school, which is the theme of our book. For four years, a quarter of our daily time has been spent in the classroom. Our academic training has laid the foundation for our future endeavors. For those who have had special interests, there have also been many other diversified activities. As well as those organizations which are closely related to academic subjects, there have been clubs and teams which have served the school, entertained us, planned social events, and contributed to our mental and physical growth. We of the Somanhis staff have recorded through the medium of pictures and prose the many memorable events which have composed our life at Manchester High School for the year 1962-1963. I would like to thank everyone who has made this such an enjoyable venture, especially Mr. Pinto, Mr. Ofiara and Mr. Saternis of the Manchester Evening Herald for their photographic contributions. With this thought in mind, I present to you the 1963 Somanhis! Margaret E. Woferto editor 1963 SOMANHIS STAFF Margaret Roberts, editor ...... Joan Anderson Toni Russell, ass’t. editor .......... Frederich Jacobs Gary Harrison A-TRIBO LE... to a championship coach and team A team of which MHS has been constantly proud is its soccer team. While other teams may fluctuate between good and bad seasons, the soccer team has consistently turned in a winning season. This year was no exception. Beside gaining an overall record of ten wins, four losses, and one tie, this year’s squad added further glory to our alma mater by win- ning the CIAC state championship. Tri-captained by John Verfaille, Fred McCurry, and Doug Pearson, the soccer team finished seventh in the state, nearly eligible for the tournament. As fate would have it, though, Brian McMahon High School of Norwalk failed to comply with tournament regulations and was disqualified. As a result, MHS gained a berth in the tournament and, capitalizing on this good fortune, went on to win the CIAC title. The credit for this year’s fine team, and for making Manchester a name to be reckoned with in Connecticut, must go to our soccer coach, Mr. Richard Danielson. “Mr. D.,’ “Danny,” or other various names given to him by the members of his soccer teams, has demonstrated his amazing ability to work with high school boys and to mold his teams into championship material. During the seventeen years he has been coach- ing the MHS soccer team, Mr. Danielson has had a truly awesome record. Seven of his teams have won the CCIL title, four outright and three in ties with Hall High School of West Hartford. Ten of the twelve teams under his direction have played in the state tournament. Including this year’s win, three of his teams have captured the = ee = CIAC title. : 4 pA Not only a winning coach, but also a man who ‘ Sa has won the admiration of the boys who have played under him, Mr. Danielson may honestly take pride in being the varsity coach of MHS’s soccer team. Mc- experiments in democracy : PURPOSE The Student Council acts as the voice between the students and administration. It works to regu- late the social activities of the student body and to maintain a high morale among the students. ORGANIZATION The Council is composed of homeroom repre- sentatives and alternates from each senior high school class. Those six receiving the highest num- ber of votes in each of the three classes make up the executive council which discusses matters be- fore they are put before the general council. AFFECTS STUDENT BODY The Council is responsible for many of the social activities enjoyed by high school students. Clubs receive financial aid from the SAA fund. Numer- ous sport dances are held on Friday nights throughout the year (odd hop, sock hop, Roaring 20’s) as well as a prom in the fall. The Council sponsors the senior-faculty game, assemblies and an election for president each year. The Council works closely with the administra- tion to shape school policy on many matters. In the past, it helped to formulate the smoking policy now in effect. It is now working to solve the prob- lem of vandalism. 147 We Listened Carefully to Their Speeches . and PLECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS... We Were with All of Campaign Gimmicks. The purpose of the “A.F.S.” spon- sored trip was to promote understanding and friendship between nations. Under the program, the Nelson I. Regalados, a Filipino family living in a sugar plantation called Canlubang, “adopted” me as a member of their family. Their warm friend- ship and unending hospitality, characteristic of all Filipinos, made it easy to be- come acquainted with the community and the new way of life. Since the Philippine student’s summer vacation is during April and May, I had a chance to attend Rizal Institute, the high school in Canlubang. There I learned some unforgettable lessons, but not necessarily from books. Adjusting to the different customs and way of life in the Philip- p ines, as well as gaining new friends in a foreign land, made last sum- mer the most educational, interesting, and enjoyable experience I’ve ever had. This trip to the Philippines has broadened my interests and helped me appreciate the high standard of living in America. This trip was a priceless experience, and I am very grateful to the American Field Service and the students of Manchester High School for making it possible. Bll Whkteeke AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE PROGRAM Believe it or not, but it will be hard to leave Manchester and M.H.S. I never thought it was possible to make so many good friends in only one year. In fact, everybody has been very nice to me. This friendliness is probably what I will remember best of all when I think back on this time, which has certainly been the most interesting and, in many ways, happiest year in my life. As I am very curious about what will happen in this town and to all of you who live here, I would be glad if you write to me. I will answer.
