ii 'Q Preface . . . In choosing the theme for the 1962 Somanhis, we of the staff have selected what we believe to be most representative of the essential spirit, ideals andactivities of our school . . . Indians. This yearbook presents a pictorial and editorial review of the events and activities of 1961-1962. Within these pages are pictures and articles reflecting the total life of Manchester High School in the year 1961-1962. I would like to thank all of the people-that helped to make this yearbook possible. We were very fortunate this year to have three student photographers, Don Pepin and Phil Daley of the Somanhi-s Staff and William Pittman, a free-lance photographer. I wish to thank Mr. Pinto, Mr. Ofiara and Mr. Saternis of the Manchester Evening Herald for their co-operation and Hne photographic contributions. We are also indebted to our school photographer, Mr. Leon Fallotg to the art work done by Karen Niles and her art staff under the supervision of Mrs. Kelsong and to Mr. Ostrowski and the members of the M H.S. Publications for soliciting patrons. Most of all I extend a word of thanks to my staff, which spent over 1500 man-hours creating this book, and especially to Mr. Jay Stager, our adviser, for his assistance and the many pictures that he took. I wish to express my gratitude to everyone at Manchester High School who helped to make this job easier and more enjoyable. I present to you the 1962 Somanhis ! The first issue of the Somanhis was printed way back in 1916 at the old South Manchester High School with the assistance of Miss Fanny Rexford, who later became Mrs. Sidney Wheaton. The previous year found the newly established debating club discussing as its first issue - Resolved: M.H.S. Should Have a School Publication . The debate was won by the supporters of the resolution and shortly there- after a contest was held to deter- mine a name for the new publica- tion. Miss Gladys Keith won the contest with her entry of Soman- his , a name derived from the first letters of the school's name. Elected as the first editor was Ronald Fergu- son, who, in later life was closely associated with the Manchester Herald. The Somanhis Events , as it was then called, was a thin news and literary magazine which was pub- lished several times a year. The year A TRIBUTE We of the Somanhis staff wish to express our deepest appreciation to Miss Ione Fellows who has guided the pro- duction of the yearbook for twenty-eight years. She has devoted much time and energy to Somanhis, and through her ability and dedication to it, she has not only helped our yearbook to improve each year, but has also contributed greatly to the successful growth of the Connecticut Scholastic Press Association. We sincerely thank her for a job well- done! 1933 marked the birth of the SOMANHIS as a yearbook inde- pendent of the literary magazine, and the yearbook came under the direction of a new adviser, Miss Ione Fellows. Over the years, the M.H.S. annual has had various themes ranging from friendship and patriotism in the war years to a tribute to our new states, Alaska and Hawaii, in 1961. Many times we hear the expression Don't judge a book by its cover , but in the case of the SOMANHIS, the cover often expresses the theme of the book or a significant event of that year. With an increase in the graduating classes from 218 seniors in 1933 to 671 seniors graduating in 1961, the yearbook has also in- creased in size correspondingly. After twenty-eight years of de- voted service in producing the SOMANHIS, Miss lone Fellows handed over the advisership of the annual to Mr. Jay R. Stager in 1962. sitais -eww, Q
