SOMANHIS STAFF Preparing and organizing this 1958 edition of Somanhis was the work of the Somanhis Staff. Under the direction of Miss lone Fellows, the stafif met in Room 215 every Friday afternoon. The staff attended the Connecticut Scholastic Press Convention held at the University of Connecticut in October. Working iointly with the editorial stat? were the Somanhis Art Staff, directed by Mrs. Laverne Kelson, and the Somanhis Photography Staff, directed by Mr. Lawrence B. Perry. These stafts worked hard in helping to carry out the art plans and photography ideas of the yearbook. HIGH SCHOOL WORLD The High School World, organized in the year 1934, has worked efficiently for twenty-four years to record the activities of the school and the achievements of individual students. Directed by Miss Helen Estes, and edited by Janet Flavell, each staff member was assigned a sport, club, a teacher's class, as a beat and was occasionally given special assignments. The High School World, through the pages of the Manchester Evening Herald, has presented to the townspeople many of the activities which high schools have taken part, both as extracurricula and classroom work. The members met twice a month in the school library to unify all student activities, to aid in shaping school policies, to conduct money raising campaigns for worthy causes, to sppnsor school dances, and to further in all ways the best interests of the school. The representatives and alternates, elected by the student body, represented their classes in the school government and discussed with them all council action. Weiss, CURRENT AFFAIRS CLUB The Current Affairs Club, under the direction of Mr. Lewis Piper, met every Tuesday evening throughout the school year. The club, con- sisting of seniors, discussed from an obiective point of view, current problems facing the nation and the world. Panel discussions were held at the weekly meetings and occasionally an outside speaker discussed problems with the club. The group travelled to New York in October to view Wall Street and the United Nations. The club participated in the model United Nations Assembly held in April. Meetings were held on the first and third Monday of the month in Room A-7 or the cafeteria. The Program, Social, and Service Committees planned activities for the year which included the preparation of the Thanksgiving basket for a needy family, and the contribution of favors and toys to the Newington Home for Crippled Children. Other activities for the year included co-sponsorship of the annual Spring Frolic, a fashion show, and the selling of shakers at games. Albert Pearson, the mem- bers of the Round Table Singers met every Tuesday to practice for the appearances and special musical programs they put on. They spent another active season this year, in keeping with their purpose, to present programs of singing entertainment for various meetings of clubs and organizations during the month of December, and throughout the year. Included in their program were: playing for basketball and foot- ball games, and numerous sports' assemblies. They presented their Annual Spring Concert in March, after which followed a dance. They also marched in the Me- morial Day Parade and Daniel Manchuck was the Student Leader for the year 1957-58, directing the band at games and assemblies. SOCCER Working and playing together with schoolmates and boys from other high schools, creating among the mem- bers a desire to improve themselves physically, emotional- ly, morally, and mentally so that they might be more able to take part in later community activities were the pur- poses of the Soccer Team. Coached by Mr. Richard Danielson, the team prac- ticed every afternoon to be prepared for the interscholas- tic games. BASKETBALL Although losing the maiority of their interscholastic basketball games, the Varsity Squad kept their spirit and sportsmanship at a high level, they strove to play the game well. Under the coaching of Mr. Elgin Zatursky, the team was divided into three squads for practice in the gym. The purpose behind this practice was to further the skill, sportsmanship, and spirit of the team. The team had a record of two wins and eleven losses. Captain forthe 1957-58 season was Richard Dubo Dubanoski. The Jayvees, under the coaching of Mr. Raymond Korbusieski and Mr. Philip Hyde, displayed good team work. The club was composed of seventy mem- bers from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The girls learned to develop res- ponsibility and to enrich their leadership. This year the group supplied food and gifts to a needy family at Christmas time. They also practiced in precision work for the annual Physical Education Assembly and officiated at intramural games. Brady met every Thursday afternoon until four p.m. in the swimming pool. To develop swimming stunts and a sense of rhythm by swimming to music were the aims of the Aquaettes. They presented a water ballet for the members of the P.T.O. on January 'l3. A water ballet for parents and friends was presented on Jan- uary 29. Miss Julia Case and Miss Mar- tha Peterson, club directors, assisted the girls in the club with various tumbling ' stunts in preparation for the annual Man- K chester High School Tumbling Exhibition.
