The fifty-four members of the club gave one or two periods a week, in service in the library. This consisted of filing cards in the catalogue, shelving books, making posters, arranging bulletin boards, taking charge of incoming and out- going books and becoming familiar with the magazine stacks and reference material to help students with their research work. Book Week in November was celebrated French Club 'lr ir The French Club included members of all the French classes who devoted two class periods a month for their club work. Under the supervision of Miss Low, the program chairman carefully arranged a varied pro- gram of events for each meeting. Members answered the roll call by giving the name of a French city, holiday, song, river, or famous personality. These names were then recorded in the pupil's notebooks and were incorporated with regular class- work. At each meeting a report on the current trend of events in France was given by some member. The third year members delivered their reports in French. These reports fa- miliarized the students with the present situa- tion in France and enabled them to realize the Debating Club ir Despite the curtailment of traveling, the Debating Club continued to study and to debate important issues confronting this troubled world. The club was limited, as in the past three years, to intramural debates centering around the debate question of the year, Resolved: That 18 years olds should be allowed to vote. Spanish 'Club 'Ir 'Ir There are three divisions of the Spanish Club, the first year, second year, and third year groups. In the third year group empha- sis is placed on the part Spanish plays in a world at war. Each member supplements Spanish in a World at Warn with the Selecciones del Reader's Digest. Oral re- ports, original themes, coupled with the trans- lation of important historical documents and events, have aided in making each member conscious of current activities on both the fighting and the home fronts. This year the display featured several hundred pictures chosen for their subject matter for use in the various classes of the school. Tag Day also held during Book Week and sponsored by the club, brought in over fifty dollars. Books suggested by the students were bought with this money. Social activities for the year were ini- tiation and Halloween parties in the fall, a dance in the spring, and a Pot Luck supper for the departing Senior members. 'Ir al' ir ak 'lr problems facing this valiant country in the post-war world. La Nlarseillaise, the stimulating French National Anthem, and other native French songs, as well as French Canadian songs, were sung at each meeting. The members also found enjoyment in playing French games. At least one, and possibly two meetings were given over to a discussion of France in Amer- ica such as French influence and their cus- toms in North America. Skits and short plays, written by members of classes were acted out by other students. Through these informal periods, the mem- bers of Les Cercles Francais gained a more practical knowledge of France and her people. ir 'lr ir ir 'k The Debating Club debated the subject in an assembly period. The affirmative, ac- cording to the vote of the student body won a unanimous decision over the negative. Other questions debated by the club were: Resolved: There should be compulsory military service after the warf, 'KEvery able-bodied citizen over eighteen years old should either work or fight. 'Ir 'k ir ak ir Spanish letters to the boys in the service, the members have applied their knowledge of every day Spanish. Members of the second year Spanish Club have had an interesting and varied program correlating with the regular class work on war Spanish. Throughout the year the first year Spanish group has had special holiday programs commemorating Columbus Day, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and Pan American Day. Activities of this group have also included cultural essays, quiz, and musi- cal programs. V.ff1.X'Af'ls ART CLUB 'irzrt rnfw-A. lieeehler, S, Ferguson, B. Lewis, l'l. Lloyd, ll. Spalding, R. Membership in the club is open to any sophomore, junior, or senior girl who has shown keen interest in sports through parti- cipation, and who is able to pass a required test on rules of these sports included in our after-school activities. Training in leader- ship is offered each member through oppor- tunities to assist the Physical lfducation 'lleachers in gym classes and conduct after school activities. 'llhe annual Co-Recreational night, which was held during the Christmas season, was ir ir ir 'Ir 'Ir a most successful one. ln addition a Christ- mas party was held for the members at the last meeting before the Christmas vacation. The Play Day Committee conducted a very successful play day in the fall to which girls leaders from three other high schools were invited. ln the spring ten senior mem- bers attended a Square Dance Play Day sponsored by the club of East Hartford High School. The girls concluded their year's activities with a picnic and an evening of sports. After tryouts in the fall, live new memhers were added to the squad. Practicing twice a week, the squad worked towards group per- fection of the old cheers, and developed five new cheers of which a foothall cheer was especially welcome. During the haskethall season, the cheer- leaders and the hand sponsored a pep song ir it if ir 'Ir I as contest. Cash prizes were awarded the three hest songs entered. The songs were puh- lished in the Klanchester Iiwning lleralrl, and were sung at all the haskethall games. Two rallies were held during the year to teach the new cheers and songs. The cheerleaders have worked hard during the last two years to develop better cheering. This year, under the guidance of Kliss Bar- hara Uitmars, they have continued to aim toward this goal, and the student hody has given them enthusiastic support. if dd 4 5 . 4, -1- 5 9 lo-lj AQUA-ETTES l'ir.rl rua:-M. BARR iz'r'r 'llhe 19-l-l-45 basketball season was one of the best for Xl.H.S. in many years. Out of thirteen starts the Red and YVhite quintet won eleven and lost two games. The team at- tained this excellent record despite the fact that three of the original quintet left for the service during the season. By virtue of their many wins the Manchester High quintet was one of the three tied for first place in the C.C.I.L. between hlanchester, hleriden, and Bristol and was the only C.C.I.L. team to i' it ir it 'A' play in the C.l.A.C. Class A tournament match by downing Bassick High of Bridge- port in an exciting game, but was defeated by Hillhouse in the second round of the tourney. One of the closest games of the season was the Xleriden game, played here, in which the Red and lVhites were defeated by a very small margin in an overtime period. Another overtime game was the one at VVilliam Hall High, but there, when the whistle blew, Man- chester was the winning team. Several underclassmen distinguished them- selves during the season. A bright season is promised for next year as many experienced veterans are expected to return. if J dd 9 0 5 l66l l'ir FOOTBALL :rl rufu'-U. Iiunnet, I. XVe-nzc-I, R. Pierro, Rolmlw, F.
