EE rt The Art Club aided the war effort this past season in two distinctive ways. The mem- bers continued the line practice of purchasing War stamps in place of dues. The newly organized Art Service Squad. consisting of six talented Senior Art Club members devoted much time to the producing of war posters and charts needed by the school, the Red Cross, the American Legion, C lub E X. and other organizations. Since many of the members either intend to specialize in art in future years, or consider it their hobby, the activities of the club were very diversified. The group took art excur- sions as they have done in the past seasons. Besides being enjoyable, the program exe- cuted by the Art Club was exceedingly edu- cational to the art students. A- I. E anchester Girl eserves Club E For the first time since its establishment at KI. H. S., the Girl Reserve Club was divided into two separate groups. This division was necessitated bv the large number of girls eligible for membership. Since the club wished to maintain its democratic procedure of admitting all girls who had signed twice. the Junior class members formed a separate club. Although the two branches had dif- ferent officers and different meeting places, several combined projects were accomplished. Like the other school organizations, the Junior Girl Reserves Club with Kliss Dit- mars as adviser, helped prepare for victory. Besides aiding the war effort by charitable work, the girls endeavored to become good citizens through self-analyzation and improve- ment. Realizing the importance of being prepared for victory, the Senior Girl Reserves Club, un- der the direction of Xfiss Greenawav, exe- cuted a highly intensified vocational program. Able speakers acquainted the members with the requirements needed for nursing, store work, social work, and teaching. As in past seasons, the club made outstand- ing contributions to the War effort. Examples of these charitable projects were the collecting of old clothes for Occupied lfurope, and helping with the rationing. Although their programs differed, both branches of the club completed an extremely active and valuable season. nm PM 4' 55 ' 1.3-. Y - ,L Q .: 7:21-r RE- if ' A -in amen 1 . ,f . ,A 1 1 J! . With this in mind, the Library Club, un- der the supervision of hlrs. Segar, has tried to maintain and improve our exceptionally fine high school library in every way. To acquaint the school with many of its hne books, the club conducted a book display during Book VVeek and invited the faculty to a tea and to judge the displays. 'liag Day was conducted to collect funds for new books during that same week. Each member gave one or two periods a week to aid in library work. Their duties included putting books away, filing cards, arranging material for the vertical and pic- ture hles, keeping the magazine stacks in order, releasing books, and preparing new books for the shelves. Through the coopera- tion of the fifty members of the club, the library has handled efficiently the needs of its many readers. lts social events consisted of a lllerry Christmas party in December, a Gypsy Jam- boree in Klarch, and a Hobo picnic in the spring. .Q ,f if'-- R Bm , .. is ,Ig , .-16 ' if, 4 -EIL, N A-J .. -57' fi A 'gi' ,aff . The organization can number this year among its most successful in both attendance and interest. New students joined to make the club larger in size, and in joining brought with them a score of new ideas. 'llhe program was made up of talks given by qualified speakers, a study of the micro- scope, and studies of other various phases of biology. These studies are not all part of a regular Biology Course, and they not only pointed out some aspects of health and clean- liness, perhaps hitherto unnoticed, but they also furnished a solid background for the regular Biology Course. The members Wrote original themes on the war effort, com- mercial letters, and dialogues. During the second semester, the class used HSelecciones del Readerls Digest, for oral Spanish re- sumes of articles of current interest. War' Spanish was also studied by the sec- ond year group. ln this club the vocabulary of the Air Corps and that of the other armed forces were stressed. For cultural programs the club discussed articles from the monthly magazine, The Izzter-A111e1'ir'r1n. Although war vocabulary was stressed somewhat in the first year organization, many club meetings were devoted to quiz programs on cultural essays, llexico, Guatemala, and Chile were studied from travel readings. E E Cheerleading E E Since morale is as important in school today as in everywhere else, the cheerleaders, under the direction of illiss Barhara Ditmars, girls' physical education instructor, worked hard this year to perfect their cheers, and so to help the school teams continue towards victory. ln the fall, they held a rally designed to teach the student body new cheers, to improve the cheering section, and to develop a hetter school spirit. Also, in order to familiarize 1 l nik .aa - the cheering sections with the present Klan- chester cheers, the cheerleaders added hut four new cheers to their repertoire this year. They feel this has heen an asset, and are pleased with the cooperation they have re- ceived from the student hody. Seeking revenge due to last year's heart- breaking setbacks, the red and white delivered a 13-0 defeat to lyferiden to open its season. This victory was followed by a 9-6 setback handed to hliddletown. A 7-7 tie with Bulkeley was the only mar on the teamys victorious record. Climbing toward its peak, the team handed East Hartford a 20-0 white- most impressive victory of the year by defeat- ing West Hartford 49-0. By winning the C. C. I. L. crown the team bore out last yearls SOINIANHIS prediction that the squad would be second to none. The team gained recognition as a smooth working and power- ful squad, being rated as the third best team in the state. Next year's team, although minus seven out of eleven of this year's first string, will mold its squad around reliable veterans filling in with this year's excellent reserve power. All factors considered, next yearls squad has pros- pects of a good season. arf ir ,, it , 2, . 4' , ,, If w, , in 0 i x. . - g1?'4t ' ,Q 1.1 ,,qf,,f r pgs-. -f- 41- .4 my-me-.f 543' ,. ,Q 'fifilif e K -ff' - Lg ' s., 1 to . ri W- 533321 wif -- :fmeff E661 CROSS CO1 7NTR Y Ffrsl rnfzc-R. Bris- tol handed hlanchester its Worst defeat by -l-l score and then the team suffered its sec- ond defeat at the hands of Kleriden, a close l-0 vvhitewashing. lleriden, incidentally, was the only club to escape with a double win over the Kelleyites. The team entered the win column for the second time by de- feating hliddletown, reversing a 4-2 count in Which hlanchester was the loser in the first encounter. VVest Hartford received revenge for an early season loss to llanchester, beat- ing them in a 3-l affair. The team com- pleted the season with a brilliant 6-2 defeat meted out to Bristol. The 1943 E . team failed to do its best in the State Kleet, but finished third in a field of ten entries. The results of the meet were: Hartford first 2812, Stratford second 27, Rlanchester third 2-lk, Chapman Tech. fourth 23, Weaver fifth 22, Greenwich and Buckley tied for sixth with 16, Ansonia seventh 15, New Britain eighth 7, and New Haven Commer- cial ninth with 1. hlanchester entirely sur- passed its competitors in the C.
