The national scholastic topic of the year was Resolved: 'l'hat the Federal Government Should Own and Operate the Railroads. This topic was studied early in the year by holding inter-club debates. The annual Connecticut Debating Clinic held at New liritain High School on Decem- ber 19th saw two Klanchester teams in action in a no-decision debate against East Hartford. A week later hlanchester won its first judged debate against New Britain gain- ing two 3-0 decisions. lVindr-or was the next victim to lose l9l5 two 3-O verdicts to the Red and VVhite team. Plainyille then felt the power of Hr. George Dougherty's debaters when Manchester gained two more 3-ll de- cisions. A Freshman Debating Club was or- ganized by Klr. David Hartwell. This club held many interesting inter-club debates on subjects requiring less formal research. Mr. Hartwell also assisted lllr. Dougherty in preparing the varsity squad for their debates. On the State Tournament debates, hlanchestefs negative team defeated ICnfield 3-U but the aflirmative dropped a close decision of l-2 to Hartford Publ lic High School. l94O 3,5 ' AN N IVE RSA RY 62 LIBRARY CLUB First le0'LL'.' Today, in addition to these sports we have football, swimming, cross-country, golf, and tennis teams. ln the course of twenty-five years, many fine records in sports have been established. The record for the high jump set in 190-1 by John Pickles was 5 feet 2M inches, while today the record held by Wesleyf Palmer of the class of 1938 is 6 feet 291 inches. The present discus record of 138 feet M inch, set by Elmo Gavello, as com- pared with 76 feet 5 inches set in 1908 by J. Horan, shows a marked increase in the skill of this sport. The following quotations found in past issues of the Sonmnlzis concerning sports may prove to be interesting as well as enlightening. After a lapse of over thirty years, football as a major sport was renewed in South lllanchester High School. Cn September 13, 1923, Principal Quimby announced that a team to play this sport would be organized on the condition that members of the team or the student body finance the outfitting of such a teamf' f'Since the time when a player was injured while playing football with the High School in the late 90's, the sport was not recognized in this institutionf, Have you ever heard of the 'fhlanchester lndependentsf, An unusual experience brought about its organization. The basketball team of 1915-1916 planned a game with VVindham High School. At this time the boys traveled by train to their games and it happened that the trains were considerably off schedule on the trip to Willimantic. Three lllanchester players had made the trip by automobile and were prepared to play the game. Unfortunately, the remainder of the lllanchester team failed to reach Willimziiitic, so the three lklanchester boys borrowed two players from Windham and defeated VVindham High under the name of the Hlllanchester lndependents ! The 1111. H. S. athletic teams may be proud of their many victories. ln 1928 the 11. H. S. football team showed its worth by defeating VVest Hartford 26-6 thus capturing the C. C. 1. L. football championship. The football team again succeeded in capturing the championship in 1938. The achievements of the years 1931-32 proved worth remembering because llfan- chester not cnly held the C. C. 1. L. title for basketball, but swimming as well, and placed second in the state track meet. Again in 1938 lllanchester High School was victorious in capturing the Connecticut State basketball championship and the New England basketball championship. The high school baseball teams have won three C. C. 1. L. championships. ln 1938 the baseball team was entered in the semi-finals and in 1938 the quarter-finals of the state tournaments. Since 1936 intramural basketball, softball, and baseball have become very popular with the students. That lllanchester High School has been outstanding in the field of sports can be seen by these records. A recent survey of the athletic record of the school showed that 2822 of the boys play in intramural sports and 3596 take part in inter-school sports. Of the girls, 17W play within school and 9M participated in play days with other schools. Sports have always played an important part in the physical development of 111. H. S. students. Sports are one of the chief interests and sources of recreation provided by the school together with the various cultural clubs. ions 1940 g F Z-15 AN IEISVERSARY .rxxxxxxwlllllll XfllllXlXXllllllllw N li -at ........ l J , iw I W' b 4'- L fx ' fx -f. ii x ' , -V , 1 ' '-T Q l i ll vid .HH ll llllli ' E .nlllll i I ,WY, ' L EY nilllllll l Nl?
