This line state did own a charter Granted by an linglish sovereign: Now that country 'cross the ocean Wlished that land-grant to regain. lidmund Andros from old England Sailed across the choppy seasg Ile had come to get the charter Hy force of arms or urgent pleas. But the people of this province ,Q 3. Loved their freedom far too wellg f'QLI'2-3:1f-:..A Iiven when Sir Andros threatened, A.,- .V 'A'V .- ' - Their Herce spirit he could not quell. fgffggl 5 -'.1 1 fit 5, 1:lsa.1,-tL-5 N: v,,, So they came to this decision, 1.. I wb EQ, A For the benefit of all, ' - plii To have a most important conference 45 - V' In the Hartford City Hall. 'El l a' :,:. 55 .:., Near that hall there stood a tree Wlhich groaned and shook in the winter breeze, A But it was a, sturdy oak Hollow though its trunk had grown. Wfhile the meeting was in progress Sir Edmund asked the charter backg There the candles flickered-sputtered- And the room was dark and black. NVhen the hall once more was brightened The famous charter was not there. The men all cried, lt has been stolen! They couldn't tind it anywhere. But what happened I shall tell you: A young man named VVadsworth came, And he took that precious charter, Hid it in that tree of fame. Thus the freedom of our people Saved was by that wily stroke, And the paper safe was hidden In Connecticut's Charter Oak. B. Harvey '3511 65 lvifl ? 0 1835 JOKES AND SAYINGS BY MARK TWAIN If you don't like New Iingland weather-wait a while. Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. You would never believe how many places you can stick a needle into your- self until you go into the embroidery line and devote yourself to art. An author wrote to Mr. Clemens on the diet for authors. He asked if Mr. Clemens thought fish was good brain food. Mr. Clemens answered that it sup- plied phosphorus, but it did have further quality he thought the author need- ed Il couple of whales, from the looks of his letter. Wfhen Mark asked a neighbor if he might borrow a book, the neighbor re- plied that he might if he used it in the neighbor's library. NVhen the same neigh- bor asked Mark if he might borrow Mark's lawn, mower, Mark replied, Yes, if you will use it here! Clemens tells of himself and Bret Harte writing a play. Well, Bret came down to Hartford and we talked it over and then Bret wrote it while I played billiards, but of course I had to go over it to get the dialect right. Bret never did know anything about dialectfy NVhe11 his fortunes were at the lowest ebb, and a report went through the United States saying that Mark Twain was dead, he received a dispatch from a newspaper asking for details. '.l'he humorist immediately sent a message that made all the world laugh: The report of my death is greatly exaggerated. Clemens said to Matthews, who wrote articles for a paper: You are the very wrong-headest person in America, and you are judicious. And of the article, 'I read it to the cat-well, I never saw a cat carry on, so be- ford. You looked yesterday like the victim of a, flood and today' you're a refugee from the erupting Vesuvius. Mrs. Stowe was leaving for Florida one morning and Clemens ran over early to say good-by. On l1is return Mrs. Clemens regarded him: 'WVhy, Youth, she said, you haven't on any collar and tie. He said nothing but went to his room, did up these items in a neat package and sent it over by a servant with a line: Herewith receive a call from the rest of me. 65 'X'-5' Twain made a remark about the cook, and the butler remarked after they had had an argument about who did the most for the family: 'KYou are both far too clever to do much work. This was an unexpected shock for cook and butler. Mark Twain and VVilliam D. Howells were arguing about which one was the more famous. Howell insisted it was Twain, Every person, young and old, knows you. To prove this statement they entered a phonograph store and asked for Mark T'wain's picture. The shop keeper looked surprised for a moment and then asked, In what does she play ?', 'x A doctor friend of Mark's gave him some tablets for a cold and as Mark didn't visit his friends very often, the doctor sent. a bill to him. Mark came the next day and acted very angry and disturbed. But when his friend explain- ed it was only a. means of making Mark visit him, Mark laughed and faithfully promised to come to visit more often. After Mark had finished his speech at a dinner, a lawyer arose, shoved his hands deep into his pockets, as was his habit, and inquired: Doesn't it strike the company as a little unusual that a professional humor- ist should be so funny P Twain came back with the drawling inquiry: E Doesn't it strike this company as a little unusual that a lawyer should have his hands in his own pockets P Tonight Joan of Arc was burned to the stake. Qmeaning that he had fin- ished the book.j Mark Twain once said that pansies were violets with a college education. Gardening with Brains Finch. , General Grant said, t'Neither of us originated the idea of Sherman's march to the sea. The enemy did it. , Soap and education aren't as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run. 65 ALIFI-I ADAMSON SKIl'l'IfI6 ' Uliinrlnvxs and frirtuf' frnrrl Irruul In llnml. l'xl'PShlllHIl-S0lhIl0lllUI'9 l3l'RlIllQlllL' Vlubg Girl If0St'l'V9S 2. GIRLS' ATHLETICS During the past year, the girls' athletics, under the energetic and efficient leadership of Miss Blanche Feder, have cultivated a fine, field of athletics for the girls. The motto, Athletics for All, has been developed so that' there was some- thing which would interest every girl. The excused girls had a variety of leis- ure time activities and. chose which they wished to do. These included shuffle- board, ping-pong, deck tennis, bowling, cards, checkers, and jacks. At the end of the hockey season, an Annual Sports Day was held at XVeth- ersfield. A four-cornered tournament was held. The XVest Hartford blue team was the winner of the Winners, while our Manchester white team was the win- ner of the losers. The girls who reported for after-school basketball were divided according to their class and then according to whether they were a member of the blue or white team. These teams played inter-class games, from which was chosen an Honorary Varsity Blue and XVhite team. These teams represented Manchester High School at a tournament held at West Hartford High School, where two teams from XVest Hartford, VVether'sheld, and Bloomfield also participated. Wfest Hartford's blue team won a hard-earned victory from our blue team. The sea- son was brought to a close with the home room tournament. Margaret Haugh's team succeeded in winning the Home Room banner. Sixteen girls passed the difficult Senior Life Saving test and eleven girls passed the junior Life Saving test successfully. Social, folk, and tap dances were taught during the winter months in the reg- ular gym classes. These dances were reviewed in the gymnastic assembly held in April. In the spring, each gym class had a tennis tournament. The winners of each class played off an inter-class tournament, the winner being entered in the An- nual State Tennis Tournament. There was keen competition among the blue and white teams participating in class games as the points of each team, as well as those made by the individual, went toward the' banner award at the end' of the year. The endeavor and constant aim is to build a. program which will encourage the girls to participate in the sports for the enjoyment of the activity instead of for the sake of winning. The apparent enthusiasm and keen enjoyment of the activities outwardly manifested by the girls, indicates the full recognition of the intramural program. The traditional enmity that thrives in an inter-school pro- gram has been abolished and through this team organization, we have formed the basis of a more socialized attitude without losing the incentive for competi- :ss 55' tion. an-9 I 'fkylvrl' 'IUIII f!l'1H7V.H .vfmx of 1111'1'rfH1f11! llml ll In XV!
