He goes npon platform before enrtain, sets book on table, sits down and starts reading it. Soon two graduates enter by other door and one of them spying Father Time, points 5 . . . . . v him ont to the other. Approaching him, the first gradnate speaksg 5 First Grad. Good evening, Father Time. NVe have travelled a long way looking ,. for you. Second Grad. We have been travelling fast, steadily, and hopefully. VVe are U graduates of the 'Class of 1934, from M. H. S. : Father Time. You must be very anxious to see me and I readily believe that your way has been difficult because time waits for no man. Can I relieve ' the pressure that is on your mind? 5 -. .. . . . . . 5 First Grad. It 1Sl1,t exactly a pressure, Father Txmeg it is a yearning for events 5 of former days which we would like to recall. 5 Second Grad. We have learned from others that you keep a record of past 5, events and are willing' to unearth them for those whose interest is unabating. Father Time. Most assuredly! I have done it many times before and each time M my interest increases. Only a few weeks ago I was visited by a similar 1 group. The imagination of one was so stirred up that he expressed his re- flections by a poem. First Grad. Have you the poem? P p Father Time. I have written everything that has happened in this world. First Grad. May we read it? F Father Time. Assuredly. fFather Time turns the pages of the book until he finds the poem. Then he tnrns the book toward the gradnates.5 , First Grad. freadingj F I sank my roots in Manchester. ' I could have asked for more, P But I was happy here in town P So never saw its door. My roots first sapped the grammar school But later M. H. S. p My mind engulfed the higher arts, ' Enlarged my scope, I guess. , The days I spent were happy ones, P Those memories will cling, ' At least I feel assured they will, , Until I meet my King. Second Grad. I, say, you must be very busy in giving aidf to so many. Do you - think you can spare us enough time for our greedy and triilling wants? P 'J J 'Forty-Two .L DIDD SKKCKCCKCCCKKCKK Father Time. I am glad to see that you' practice what you learned in school about good manners. As for the time needed, there is a time and place for anything that one desires to do ifrhe is patient. I can start right away. If you don't mind drawing the curtains aside,aI will clarify the history by il- lustrating parts of it. First, I shall show a scene illustrating the first few days at high school when the students became somewhat confused in their new environment. Scene: Three students conversing as they meander along the corridor. lst stndent: Wfell, how'd I know that was the wrong room? Znd student: Gee! NVhat a place. You all have to sit in alphabetical order and keep changing rooms. 25rd student. Yeah! And then my name was written just as plain as black and' white outside. Miss Burke's room and then when I went iuside she said she was sorry, but I was in the wrong room. Father Time. Ufefers to bookl No doubt this scene reminds you of a Septem- ber day ,in 15330, when you entered M. H. S. as a freshman. But then these feelings of uncertainty were soon forgotten and you buckled down to work and to organizing the class. In each home room you chose, home room officers. Soon you gave your support to the various clubs, each according to your taste and inclination. Scene: Tableau of the Clubs-Debating Club, Cilee Clubs, Dramatic Club, Latin Club and the Floating Herald. Father Timef. Then came the class elections. After the smoke of battle cleared, you found that john McKenna was to be your President. Soon afterward, the Class purchased a painting entitled, The Santa Fe Trail , to be award- cd to the home room which showed the greatest improvement in citizenship. It was won by Miss McGuire's room and was permanently established there after it had been on exhibition in each of the freshman home rooms. Scene: Exhibition of The Santa Fe Trail . Second Grad. That was a keen contest and I enjoyed looking at the picture dur- ing the time it was in my room. Fiirst Grad. Did any of the students win prizes in the freshman year? Father Time. Phyllis Moroney was clever enough to capture an honor. She won a prize for her short story which was published in Somanhis, the school publication to which several members of your class have contributed numerous articles. That covers practically all of the major events of your freshman year. Now for the sophomore year. What would you like to know first? First Grad. I think I remember the officers. XYas not Thomas johnston the president and Eleanor Patten, vice-president? Father Time. Yes, a11d Anita Passacantell was secretary, and john McKenna was treasurer. Second Grad. Wasn't Tom the only member of the varsity basketball team? Father Time. Yes. He was the first-string center. Speaking of sports, I note that Chucky Smith and Eric Rautenburg were playing second base and center Held respectively on the Varsity Nine . First Grad. There was a sli ht decrease, but this ha ened because the clubs . g PP . 5 included members from the three upper classes. 'lhe Sophomorevhresh- 5 man Dramatic Club had a large percentage of sophomores. This club pre- sented The Arrival of Kitty in the spring. Most of the cast was made up 5 of sophomores. 3 First Grad. I'll never forget Frank Robinson as he appeared on the stage dress- h ed as Kitty! v- Second Grad. And I'll never forget the club's president, Edgar Clark, as a s negro porter! C Father Time. Edith Brown won the tennis championship this year. Another outstanding event that I note is the class party. There was a great improve- ' ment in the dancing of most of the young men. s g First Grad. What do you see in your book for our 'junior year, Father Time? 5 Father Time. This seems to be a year in which you concentrated on social activ- ities. 5 Second Grad. VVhich one is the most vivid? 5 Father Time. I would say the junior Prom. Eric Rautenburg, as the junior I Class President, had the' distinguished honor of leading the Grand March. Scene: Eric Rautenberg and Ethel Mohr in formal dress as for the Prom. P Second Grad. Didnlt we play an important part in the Clubs or Athletic teams? P Father Time. In the spring, the Sock and Buskin Club presented Reach for the Moon and several members of your class took part, among whom were Evelyn Peterson and Edgar Clarke.. Scene: Evelyn Peterson and Edgar Clarke reaching for the moon which is fixed on the wall. 7' Father Time. During that year, Coach Greer produced a wonderful soccer team 9 which lost only one game. Your class was well represented on the team. And now for your senior year,-the last stages of your journey through P M. H. S. F First Grad. Oh, yes, I remember what a shock it was to learn. during the sum- mer, that C. P. would not be with us in September. You recall he left to become headmaster of Cushing Academy. Second Grad. We were saddened to lose such a good friend and leader, but we were happy that Mr. Illing was selected to take his place and that we would ' complete our high school career, as we had started it, under his leadership. First Grad. Wasnft they SoM.xNHIs, except for the class year book, discontinued V in our senior year? Father Time. Letlsi see Cloak.: it np in baokj Yes. it was, but there was a year P book, with Fred Johansson as Editor-in-chief and Marjorie lVilson and XVil- P liam Gray as his co-editors. Silvcrstcin Coach Pete XYigren has again developed another well-balanced track team to represent Manchester in track and tield competition. Manchester opened its season hy swamping Hartford Public ti!!-255, then continued on its winning streak to down Middletown T2-235 and liast llartford, and easily won the Rhode ,Island meet. Prospects for next year's team seem good as the majority of this year's team are underclassmen. Cooperation between runners and coach was very good and helped account for such a successful season. QT ll Dill 8ffCKfKfCKfKlCKC Q s , 4 s , 4 ' Girlz Ftthletirn 4 T During the past year, sports such as: tennis, hockey. soccer, swimming, 5, basketball and other athletic participation has steadily gained favor among the y girls of Manchester High School. : The annual Hare and Hound Chase, ewding on Fern Street, was a huge suc- g cess and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Un November 4, the Blue and XVhite Hockey 5, Teams journeyed to XVetherstield where they competed with Bloomtield, XYest Hartford, and Wethersfield. Although all the girls played to the best of their 5 ability, the XVhites won one game. The Blues were defeated in this compara- ' tively new sport in M. H. S. The Fall Tennis Tournainent in which 723 girls took part was won by Edith Brown, who defeated lilsie Klein 6-72, ti-I. s As fall approached, the Hockey field and tennis courts were deserted, while the swimming pool and gymnasium were put into active use. T Un January 31, Manchester's swimming team, captained by Anne Arson, was host to W'est Hartford, Bloomfield, and XVetherstield, and won the meet by thor- oughly outclassing her opponents. M. ll. S. gained Ill points, while XVethers- f' field received 15 points, XVest Hartford ll points, and Bloomtield 2 points. Bas- ' ketball Play Day , held at XVest llartford, March 2 l, was run otf on an entirely new and interesting basis. Upon arrival, the girls were lined up according to the position they played and then were given a slip of paper indicating the team on which each girl was to play. Such teams as: Hyenas, liiraffes, Tigers, and XViildcats were prominent. The season was brought to a close by the playing of P a Home Room Tournament. Due to the changing of rooms in February, this had to be abandoned. Undaunted by this, the captains of the Home Rooms picked up new teams. A senior team, of which Ada NYebb was the captain, won P the banner. , All sports during the year were run on the competitive Blue and XYhite sys- tem, entitling each girl to a reward, after gaining a certain number of points. P Under the leadership of Miss Yirginia Howard, the girls were taught not only I the rules and regulations of sports, but that keen competition with fair and hon- - est play is the important thing.
