Student respect for authority, self-discipline, leadership, fellowship, school spirit, scholarship, a feeling of unity and a sense of belonging are accom- plished through the Student Cooperative Asso- ciation. N. Kaempf Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society has striven to interest eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students in leadership, scholarship, service, and character. Mardi Gras atmosphere prevails at Quill and Scroll dance. “ The Marie N. Morris Chapter of Quill and Scroll was organized in 1953. Since that time it has been awarded an international trophy for accomplish- ments in the field of high school publication on six occasions. Only three trophies are given by the organization each year. The most recent addition, a second place award, was received for the club’s activities during 1958-59, The main objective of Quill and Scroll is to pro- mote journalistic interests and achievements. It also fosters an interest in creative writing and scholar- ship in general. This year the club organized a debating team at Manchester and assisted the debaters in preparation for the Forensic Contest in the spring. It also made and dressed marionettes and pro- duced a marionette show, “Home Sweet Home,” demonstrating home safety. Lee Schrader “Know your school” was the goal of the Communique, with emphasis on improving attendance at P. T. A. meetings. Also, the group has continued to work with the Safety Council in Richmond. Some other special features of the paper are articles on improv- ing scholarship, career advice, and college information. Some of the editorial achieve- ments of the paper have been continued from last year, as the staff feels an aim should not be given up until it has been accomplished. With the cooperation of the S. C. A., the Communique has carried out this year’s ideals. The Communique has won many honors, including first place award in the typography competition sponsored by the Columbia Scho- lastic Press Association and the International Graphic Arts and Education Association. The goal of the Jr. Red Cross is service to the communities and the nation as well as the promotion of international friendship. Posters and radio programs were used to publicize enrollment, the first activity of the year. Following this project and continuing throughout the year were projects including volunteer work at McGuire’s Hospital, donating food to the County Welfare Depart- ment at Thanksgiving and at Christmas, visiting homes for the aged to entertain them, filling Christmas stockings with articles for dis- tribution at McGuire’s, compiling a scrapbook containing different phases of school life to be sent to a country overseas, and participat- ing in the International Art Exhibit. To help publicize the Jr. Red Cross, a bulletin board was deco- rated and placed in the hall, and the Red Cross Journal was dis- tributed to every homeroom each month, 39 David McKinley, Marie Hollingsworth, Hannah Sanderson, Mary Laine Cashion, Tgay Dunkum, Sue Schutrumpf, and Becky Petrea fill Christmas stockings for McGuire Veterans Hospital. Members Caroline Sanderson, Charles Lun- din, and Sammy Lacks decorate Christmas tree for the veterans. In-Y Throughout the year the Hi-Y, a branch of the Y. M. C. A., carries on many projects. This year the organization adopted a Negro family to whom they gave clothes and food every six weeks. During the school week members joined the Y-Teens in presenting devotions, and also in promoting Clean Speech Week, February 1-5. In the winter the Hi-Y participated in the collection of funds for the World Service Organization. Bruce Bartlam, Sponsor. Ed offers variety Tumbling is stressed throughout the year in girls’ gym classes. The girls’ physical education department tries to offer a variety of activities during the year. The type and number of sports offered depends upon the equipment and facilities available and on the size of the classes. Both ninth and tenth grade girls take part in basketball, soft- ball, volleyball, and tumbling. In addition, the tenth graders participate in shuffleboard, bowling, badminton, and archery. The freshmen also have field hockey and folk and square dancing. Other activities include soccer, speed ball, horse shoes, tract, and deck tennis. The boys’ physical education classes play touch football, basketball, and softball. They also have tumbling. Health, first aid, and classroom driver training are taught by the four members of the physical education department. For the first time archery was _ presented.
