Q 420 Q Senior Class Historq Now in the year of Our Lord 1947 did this story begin. It was in that year that a goodly band of eighth graders setforth intohigh school. They found the school inhabited by four other classes and a group of wise people, called the faculty. They were more than surprised to learn that they did not know as much as they did in the seventh grade. There- fore, they eagerly received the guidance of faculty mem- bers, Mrs. Charles Grigg, Miss Elsie Kilduff and Mrs. John MillerfMrs. Melvin A. Morris took Mrs. Miller's place in Februaryj. Under the direction of Patty Cobble, assisted by Miles King, they labored, while Peggy Nunnally did diligently record their sayings and keep up with their money. It so happened that Patty and Miles also represented the band of eighth graders in the governing body known, as the SCA. Others took part in school activities and junior varsity sports. Then came the fall of 1948 and this goodly group were known as freshmen. How happy they were to find that12 new classrooms, a beautiful auditorium and also a large cafeteria had been completed. However, they had new faculty guides, Miss Ruby Adams, Miss Vivian Fulton fnow Mrs. Charles Lambland Mrs. Pat Rollins fMrs. Edward Hayes took her place in Februaryj. Their joy was greater this year for they were allowed to havea voice in deciding which classes they would pur- sue. In the spring of Our Lord 1949 they felt that other classes had accepted them as neighbors when I4 of their number were asked to serve at the Junior-Senior Prom. The fall of 1949 found this group feeling very wise. They were sophomores! Faculty members guiding them were, Miss Doris Cavanaugh, Miss Marjorie Webb and Miss Peggy Sue Tuck. Directing their class activities was Henry Dinkins, assisted by Patty Cobble with Alminter Adkins making a record of their sayings and doingsg also a record of their money. This group had been watching for two years with long- ing, the upper classmen rushing from one activity to an- other. This year their chance came. Four of their members were cheerleaders. They had members on the athletic teams and in student activities. Very early in the junior year, under the guidance of Miss Marjorie Webb and Samuel J. Scordo, the juniors chose their leaders. This year Charles Farnsworth, assist- ed by Eleanor Wood, directed their labors, Ioan Phaup was the record keeper. They had to earn more money so a separate keeper of funds, Martha Call, was elected. When the governing body, the SCA, met, 17juniors were tapped into the Beta Club. These students had maintained, at least a B average throughout the first three years of their stay in high school. s When ringswere ordered they felt they were receiving With the help and co -operation of the sponsors, they produced the junior play Here Comes Charlie. It helped to pay for the prom. lt was during the fourth year of their stay at Man- chester, a band was organized for the first time. Orchids in the Moonlight was the theme of the prom. Eugene Grubb was elected president of the SCA for the year 1951-52. Lloyd Bass and Eugene Grubb had a great longing satisfied, when they were selected to attend 'Boys State at Blacksburg for two weeks during the summer 0f,I95l. With the fall of 1951 the class of 1952 became the oldest group in schoolg that is with the exception of that body known as the faculty. When the class first did meet, they remembered that Charles Farnsworth had worked diligently and hard as their leader during the preceding year. Therefore they chose him to lead them again. To help him they chose Joan Phaup, Charles Lindsey and Eugene Grubb. Nancyjo Kidd and JimmyCliborne, from the first grade, they chose to accompany them at all social functions. They gave to them the name of mascots. Mrs. Marie Morris and Mrs. Vivian Lamb worked diligently with them. Seniors was the name of their dignified group. One of their number was a carnival princess. Nine girls were members of the basketball team. They were also repre- sented on the other athletic teams of the school. Among the thrills of the year were: the standing of all students when seniors left the auditorium, the trip to the game at the University of Virginia, a visit to The General Assembly, a trip to Washington D.C. , The Prom, Senior Banquet, Senior Day, and those Wonder- ful Diplomas. The annual staff purchased a paper cutter and cam- era which they passed on to next year's staff. To help pay for the Memoir the seniors earned S250 from the sale of donuts. The word donuts became synonomous with seniors as they chose for the class play 'From Dollars to Doughnuts. Appearing in this donutty play were June Smith, Kathleen Bailey, Faye Riley, Joan Phaup, Betty Sue Williams, Charles Farnsworth, Lloyd Bass, Eugene Grubb, Ray Ellis and Bobby Maslin. Of course during their five years they labored hard. Will Shakespeare and his Macbeth will long be re- membered. How can they forget Macbeth when Mrs. Morris had them to memorizeat least one halfofthe play? lt is thought by some that they left many things un- done. Nevertheless, they made their departure from this schoolafter they received their diplomas in June. They did go forth to find for themselves new jobs and other homes.
