' . , ' PROPHECY Sophue was the newest arruval un Heaven and dudnt know much about what was goung on but one of the furst thungs she heard aboJt was the bug reunuon of Manchester Hugh Schools class of 50 Accordung to the gossupung angels they were already begunnung to arruve from all parts of Heaven for the bug event whuch would take place at the Celestual Hotel Not to muss anythung un her new world she wandered down to the aurport to see the members arruvung on wung wuth theur extra whute evenung robes carrued un luttle clouds Leadung the group was a most umportant man Mr Wayne Gubson who durung hus lufe on earth had progressed from edutor of the MEMOIR to edutor un chuef of the New York Tumes He was followed by hus staff of secretarues whuch uncluded Delores Andrews Jane Basl and Mary Ann Newcomb Sophue tagged along as the group went down Harp Avenue to the hotel In the lobby much back slappung and handshakung was goung on sunce others had been arruvung all the tume As Sophue walked un at Mr Gubson s sude the furst thung that met her eyes was the Red Cross flag on the wall opposrte Then she saw Betty Fusher Bass chasung about un her R C unuform makung another collectuon Of course when she came to Ann Hagood the former great Physucal Educatuon Coach at Maduson College she was agaun duscouraged by Anns declaratuon that she had no money Anyway she soud lm too busy gettung Mr Garland Campbell to polush my halo Garland had made All Amerucan basketball team of 55 Naturally as near as possuble was Audruan Creasy but now Mr A Creasy mulluonaure He had Invented and patented a sure fure way to successfully skup school Sophue was shocked to hear an uncelestual yelp as Dorus Colluns retured kundergarten teacher rushed un to greet Creasy Theur greetung rocked the luttle hotel but the nouse was hushed as everyone turned to stare when Peggy Bredemeuer the famed opera star paraded un followed by Wrenn Moorung Putney also a sunger but un the popular veun Among the plans for the evenung was a large banquet and a ball afterward whuch had been planned by the Lewus Reese Mrs Reese was the former Margaret Sumpson presudent of the class of 50 They had never quut workung and had left theur 'obs hers as buyer at Heaven s branch store of Murphys Inc and hus as Head Stockboy there He had gone places sunce hus graduatuon at M H S Jolune Hockett and Betty Lou Terrull had assusted wuth the plans and decoratuons They were especually capable havung been Home Ec unstructors back on earth Jolune at the Unuversuty of West Vurgunua and Betty Lou back at Manchester And now Sophue s heart putter pattered as that great dramatust Thomas Tromley who had been second only to Ronald Coleman on earth rose to quuet everyone and to make an announcement I have been asked he saud to untroduce our host here at the Celestual Hotel The owner and manager the Archangel St Beelzebub of course only a dustant relatuve of the so famous one now operatung another establishment St Beelzebub' Fellow Angels welcome to thus great occasuon the reunuon of Manchester s class of 1950 l offer my wushes for the success of the affaur and hope that you wull fund the servuce here the best lm also sorry to announce that the only member absent us Joyce Struckland She sends her wushes for the occasuon and the excuse that she had a lattle accudent She fell off her bosss knee and sprauned her ankle Thank you After thus Ardeth Evans and Elva Clodfelter rushed up to hum to get unformatuon for artucles un the n wspaper they owned Of course the paper consusted mostly of poetry Followung them came the sports edutor of a ruval paper Duck Perkuns Meanwhule un one corner of the large lobby was Mrs Dorus Prentuce Capel who had retured as presudent of the Chrysler Corporatuon talkung to Jeannette Tuny Orcutt now world famous effucuency expert Near them Geraldune Mansfueld was tellung Peggy Maxey how she had done so much un the clearung of the Ruchmond lums Peggy had been a successful pruvate secretary un New York un her tume l?'7l . . . . , . . . I 0 I II II CLASS HISTORY September of 1945 began a new era un the luves of eughth grade students as they entered the halls of Manchester for the furst tume It was both fascunatung and frught enung as we entered our furst year of hugh school lufe We knew too that as the furst eughth grade under the 5 year program our progress would be watched closely Wuth the guudance of our sponsors Muss Masloff Mrs Estrada and Mr Wulluams we met as a class and chose Frances Taylor Presudent Margaret Sumpson Vuce Presudent June Parlow Secretary and Dorus Prentuce Treasurer For the furst few months we walked about un awe and amazement but we gradu ally grew accustomed to the rush and excutement of hugh school Many of us trued out for varuous clubs and although some were dusappounted we were very happy to have Margaret Sumpson represent us on the basketball team and Frances Taylor as a cheerleader Just as we were gettung settled unto the routune of hugh school sprung came and soon summer vacatuon began Tume went swuftly by and soon we were back at school as nunth graders eager to resume our school actuvutues Our sponsors were Muss MacDanuel and Muss Kyle As our leaders we chose Frances Taylor Presudent Betty Bass Vuce Presudent Jeannette Orcutt Secretary and June Parlow Treasurer Our class was represented un almost all of the school actuvutues wuth Frances Taylor Ann Hagood Margaret Sumpson Dorus Colluns Joan McDanuel Ardeth Evans and Edna Cluborne wunnung posutuons on the gurls basketball team We were represented on the boys team by Garland Campbell Bob Curtus and Douglas Cox In the fall carnuval our class partucupated un varuous shows and events We had a part un the Physucal Educatuon program guven for the P T A Each tume we were called on to do a small part un some way for the school we were very proud and felt as uf we were settlung ourselves more furmly unto our hugh school lufe second hughest grade un school Realuzung our responsubulutues we chose as capable leaders Bob Curtus Presudent Margaret Sumpson Vuce Presudent Carolyn LaPrade Secretary and Lewus Reese Treasurer Mrs Vaughan and Muss Cavanaugh were our sponsors We managed the lunuor store to rause money for the most umportant event of that year Sophomore Senuor Prom For a month before the Prom you could see Sophomores hurryung along the halls draggung a stack of black and whute crepe paper wuth us or maybe a half funushed sulhouette for the sponsors approval The pass word of our class those days was May we get out of class to work on the prom? Our ever oblugung teachers gave permussuon Remember the paper cuttung meetungs'P Prom nught came at last and we felt amply repaud for all our work As we entered we saw that the gymnasuum had been transformed unto a lovely sulhouette ball room The ceulung was woven un black and whute crepe paper guvung a beautuful effect Dancung sulhouettes arrayed the walls At untermussuon our attentuon was drawn to the two beautufully decorated tables The sophomore and senuor presudents cut the three tuered cakes whuch were served wuth delucuous punch September of 1948 found us llth graders We settled down to work wuth our sponsors Muss Cavanaugh and Mrs Warren and our leaders Margaret Sumpson Presu dent Wuley Davus Vuce Presudent Jeannette Orcutt Secretary and Lewus Reese Treasurer Many students un our class had become recognuzed as school leaders as S C A offucers captauns of the basketball teams and as presidents of clubs Betty Bass a very actuve member of the Junuor Red Cross was chosen from a group of students throughout the county to represent them at a Junuor Red Cross nueetung un Atlantuc Cuty Thus was a great thrull as well as an achuevement for Betty f?4J I ' I I . . I ' I CLASS HISTORY Tume came to order our class rungs When they came there was much excutement as we compared and trued on everyones rung ln the Sprung we gave a rung dance and unvuted the senuors as guests of honor Stardust was our theme We turned the Gymnasuum unto a pleasant garden at nught wuth a dark blue sky twunklung overhead wuth a mass of sulver stars Everyone had a wonderful tume There have been many changes at Manchester sunce we were frughtened eughth graders A new wung wuth twelve classrooms clunuc room an audutoruum and a cafeterua has been added Wu h th buuldung of Holly Inn we at last found a suutable hangout and could be found there almost any tume even at lunch At last September of l949' We were proud senuors and entered unto our senuor year full of happy antucupatuon yet wuth a feelung of regret that thus would be our last year at Manchester We elected Margaret Sumpson Presudent Irby Brown Vuce Presudent Wrenn Moorung Secretary and Lewus Reese Treasurer Mrs Tompkuns and Muss Fullon were our sponsors The MEMOIR Staff was ummeduately organuzed and we began work on our annual Many students worked hard and fauthfully so that our annual would be one of the best On September 30th our class left Manchester on two school buses headed for Charlotte vull We were to be guests of honor at the Vurgunua George Washungton foot ball gam at Scotts Stcuduum We al o vusuted Montucello All too soon we had to reuurn home but the day had been fun' The n xt dat on our socual calendar was December 22 The Chrustmas dance was guven un our new cafeterua whuch was decorated un the tradutuonal holly and cedar Another date long to be remembered by our class was March 17 We presented our furst play Luttle Mu s Sputfure Headung the cast was Margaret Sumpson as Nora the luttle sputfure Supportung her were Wayne Gubson Ann Moore Wulluam Clements Ardeth Evans Elva Clodfelter Irby Brown Lewus Reese Peggy Maxey Vurgunua Root Leonard Morgan and Harold Pannell Mrs Tompkuns was our durector Tume came for orderung our unvutatuons and callung cards We really began to realuze what luttle tume we had left The doors of the Gymnasuum were closed to the senuors as the uunuors began workung on the prom Wuth natural curuosuty we would peek now and then and catch a glumpse of the yellow and green decoratuons Our curuosuty was satusfued on May 12 The gymnasuum was decorated as a beautuful colonual garden Sprays of holly hacks and roses attracted our attentuon and the checkerboard woven ceulung blended perfectly The prom was a bug success We can never thank the lunuors enough for such a wonderful tume Our last months were fulled wuth many happy events The furst was our Senuor Banquet May 19 Appropruate gufts and speeches were presented Then came Senuor Day We had the freedom of the school and un our senuor S C A program we saud our farewell to the faculty and student body On June Sth we receuved our duplomas and became graduates of Manchester Hugh School Although we are leavung our years of work and play our successes and faulures all of those thungs that have played a part un our hugh school lufe have made a dent un our memory that cannot be erased We suncerely thank our teachers our pruncupal and our fellow students for theur help and guudance throughout the years we have spent wuth them T203 ' I . ,.
