The very foundations of social order and justice and human rights have been so torn asunder that we in these United States of America are today facing a crisis far more serious than many of us dare to realize. I have so desire to be an alarmist, but, regardless of whether or not the United States becomes actively engaged in the present world war, it is surely going to affect our American way of life. To what extent our way of living will be influenced by this war on democracy and the.democratic way of life time itself can only tell. Of one thing I am sure and that is that sooner or later there must come a period of social readjustment which will tax every thinking person in America to the utmost. I think that the present world struggle will not be over tomorrow nor even for several tomorrows yet to come. Therefore, the young men and the young women of today are to be faced with the great task of participating in this social readjustment. Are you preparing to take your share of the responsibility? Are you capable of intor- preting what you read and hear with a clear and unbiased mind? Are you capable of doing some thinking for yourself or do you have to depend on some one else to do your thinking for you? In this day of common peril it is not enough for us to merely say that I put my trust in God and let it go with the saying. If we as Christian nation expect to exercise the proper influence over the world, we must daily live that trust in God so that He and the world may know that for which we stand, So live, that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan, which moves To that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, Scourged to his dungson, but, sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams, TRPOLNTEVLHRAAHA EYE Aegeedeteengiteniae ze) 4 HENAN nd? ae | AOMORI Aectepet HL iAttaate HET EL LITE fF (Habs ee tae) OL EE A A EE EA TS RS NS RS NR NT Ok canes EE ET Kee mm Re i i ; apres | Phe Be ye | . i { pe ae : ge 32 i | maaan bo QA 35 ee Bi vas AA ded . a She Bie ‘Oo 97s ma EgS mrt © O © fd 1 20 2eO © Ow As ‘ ° Oo we ag i b wet) rg aca = ew ee ae LL RN ET OMET BEES OG COLE IO CES EST I ON ae RE oe LT ce metre er ae ae en itl ate etna I A Ne NR NTS OR etn a NO meg = omc eae: Sememe ner sary toenrnenesena ese eit ems nen i en mine eS mata tacos sas eta 1 _ iN s { . Miss Ball and Miss White were our faculty loaders for this important yeare The class officers remained the same as last year. Very early in the year we wore honored by a Hobo Party given to us by the Seniors. This indeed was a thrill and a surprise wo had not dreamed of. We gave a Junior play this year called GOOD GRACIOUS, GRANDMA which was quite a success. Many of our classmates took impore- tant parts in school athletizs and other activities. Another surpris¢ was in store for us, for we were invited to attend the William and Mary and Washington and Lee football game at Williamsburg, 4% game and trip which will long be remembereds May Day came again; this year we were represented in the May Court Dy Gwendolyn Morrissette, Eliza- beth Cunningham, Billy Dunn, Kenneth Campbell, and Minor Boos, Also, f P wh JA : . “ CoAT ‘ . : ae AVANT Seley FASUTE LETT fs 9 x Oi EEE: hy STEVE oh y] 4} Me Say Hah - vee wre PT Le 28 yy) foe pees Kae ees . June crept up hurriedly, and before we kmew it, the third chapter of our book was closed and friends were parting for vacation. The fourth and last of our chapters began with fifty-seven characters. Miss Dorothy Ball will again lead us through the pages of the most important of all chapters. Our organized class this year is under the leadership of Bill Ferguson, President; Billy Dunn, Vice- President; Frances Snellings, Secretary;and Warren Pannell, Treasurer. Our class meetings, for the first time, were held at night in the Home Economics Cottage. How we have enjoyed those happy, carefree mestings that have been a long-awaited privilege! At one of the class mectings, we elected Frances Snellings, Historian; Gerry Dorset, Prophetess; and Kenneth Campbell, Testator for the classe Many of the Seniors again played important parts in athletics, and helped win many of the games for our school. Again we were honored by the College of William and Mary with an invitation to attend their football game against the University of Virginia. The game was exciting. Our Senior Play entitled THE TIN HERO was a great successe Our classmates became actors and actresses over night. Billy Dunn, Gerry Dorset, Dot Routon, Frances Snellings, Gwen Morrissette, Jean Tooley, Jeanne Patterson, Nell Chesson, Garland Shelton, Thelma Williams, Ray- mond Cox, and Melvin Smith made up the cast, Time seemed to fly -now thet we were ready to leave our Alma Mater. May Day came around; Minor Boos and Jeanne Patterson reigned over the court as King and Queen; Wilbur Welton.and Gaynelle Tooley were Lord and Lady, with Phyllis Leonard, Frances Snellings, Raymond Cox, and Kenneth Campbell as representatives in the court. In May we took a long awaited trip to Washington, which was en- joyed very much by our whole class. This was a now privilege which we all appreciated greatly. Also in May, we were honored with a banquet given by the Juniors at the Chesterfield Golf Club. This was an occasion long to be re- membered by cach of use June drew near, and due to the help and guidance of the faculty and Mr. Reid, we are now entcring into our harbor, graduation. Al- though we have lost twenty-four of our members along the way, we are proud of the fifty-seven members of our class, the largest graduating class in the history of the school. In order to predict their futures, I traveled to all counvries and dipped into nagic end science, but all in vain. At last tired and despondent, I took a walk in a coul, green forest. I walked slowly along, my head bent low in deep thought. The mossy spot just ahead would be an ideal place to sit and thinke Suddenly, a marvelously sweet voice broke upon the stillness: Pollow the white dove and your search will be ended. A snowy bird fluttered. from the trees and flew before me. It lod me on and on, till finally the forest stopped abruptly and I found my= self in a wonderful garden. The air was permeated with an exquisite perfume. Among the tress, whose leaves glistened like jewels, were birds of brilliant plumagee In the center of the garden was 4 fou- tain with diamond-like spray. As I approached it, 4 beautiful girl with gleaming, flowing hair handed me a golden goblet filled with an amber-colored fluid, saying, This is the water of the magic fountain; drink; in the spray you will see pictured the future of your class. As the wine spread through my veins, my brain seemed cleared of all imperfections; my senses were shar ened instead of dcanened. I looked into the spray and saw vague shapes which gradually cleared and formed a large auditorium. It was filled completely with interested and attentive listeners. Someone on the stage was playing softly 2 beautiful piano composition, The figure of eloquence seated at the piano was one of familiarity. When she stood to leave, I saw the face of VIRGINIA JACOB, whose expression was one of rapt devotione The audience rose to leave and I followed a group of boys in West Point uniform, one of whom uttered an expression familiar to my ears. With close attention I watched to see who it could be end “if I knew hime True enough, when he turned to go invo the building, BILLY DUNN stood out, © happy, progressive boy. Some years had passed and he had probably toiled faithfully to reach his goal. This faded and another scene came into view; this more dreadful, than the other. Waves were dashing madly aguinst a tossing life boat. A drenched figure within was fignting to keep the boat up. The roar= ing of a plano was hearde It had come to the rescue of a sinking ship . When the pilot of the plane stepped out on the wing to help the person in the boet to climb on, I kmew by JUNIOR BUTLER saying, “Lord, I 'clare, it was hee When safely inside, roady for flight, BILL FER- GUSON, at last 2 pilot, listened to JUNIOR's story about the sinking ship and his oxperiences as @ sailore CARROLL BRUNER, who works with BILL, wes quiet listener. In the spray a picture of rare beauty grewe I would say it was a home of about Piftcen rooms in size. There was such a strong feeli:g¢ of good will, peace and love that I wondered who the. teachers couid be, for one could plainly tell _ they were of that scarce cless of women whose lives were a daily sac- rifice and blessing. When the prayer was over, I saw the three mis- sionaries: RUTH WYRICK, ELIZABETH CUNNINGHAM, and LETA RICHARDSON. I heard a wild crowd and then the firing of a gun. A hurdle race had begun. The leading figure was an erect man with very.smooth fea- turese He was an excellent rider. As they neared the last jump and the finish line, his face became plainer. Yes, it was WILBUR WELTON. I saw a.big old house standing back off the road, A very rickety old car was sputtering down the road. It stopped and a very tall girl leaped out and ran’ into the house. You are here, JEANNE, a voice called. Come on in and eat. Wait'll I wash my hands, JOSY. Say, JOSY, I've enlisted three more girls: KITTIE WILKINSON, ELLEN TAYLOR, and MILDRED HICKS. The trees were nearer and a path made its way plain. In following it, I came upon a log cabin of ultimate find in such @ place. FRANK GLIDEWELL and GILBERT MANN were living a peace- ful and happy life. Easy come, easy got A radio with a book +:review was coming on. The book of most im portance to me was not reviewed but very definitely praised. A law book, it was, by BEN MARTIN, who is an up and coming lawyer. The birds were singing and the aroma of newly-plowed soil filled the air, I saw a man who seemed to be giving orders to a helper. The voices were plainer, and I could hear WARREN PANNELL giving orders about his farm, He turned to go over and sit down under a tree in the shade and someone else was there reading in the shade of a tree. MEL- VIN SMITH and WARREN own the farm. MELVIN studies agronomy and WARREN puts it into practice. The soft light of the moon silvered the waters of a small lake. On it a boat was floating lazily. Three girls were seated in the stern and drooped their heads demurely while they listened to the ime passioned words of a man. It was truly a magnificent voice singing an old love song. As they lifted their heads and sighed I saw tho big brown eyes of JEAN TOOLEY, ELSIE MELIUS, HANNAH JEWETT, and NELL CHES- SON. It was oa crowded church I saw. The soft strains of a violin blended exquisitely with notes of the clear-voiced singer, DOTTY MAE ROUTONe The song was changed to the triumphant strains of a wedding march, and all eyes were turned ex vectantly toward the bridal party. They are two wonder- ful people, but I never suspected that match. A huge, shiny car was coming in the drive. It stopped and a boy and a girl climbed out. They were MINOR BOOS AND GAYNELIE TOOLEY, From the way things looked, MINOR must be doing well. As KENNETH and GWEN rushed out to mect then, the picture blurred and faded, A group of people were standing before a painting in an Art Gal- lery. There were opinions being voiced of praise and dislike, after the manner of people. It made mo very proud to see that name of the artist, especially when I found it was none other than VIRGINIA FUQUA. The curtain had just risen on the opening scone of one of the most talked of plays of the season. Evory onc was praising the young actress who had the leading role, I looked forward anxiously to find who our star could be. When he finished putting in gas, I saw it was RAYMOND COXe By the Esso Sign I might have known! A large frame for a house stood in a suburban district of aris=- tocratic air. Men were busily at work on the construction and I saw the contractor and the electrician in a conversation. The former was WILLARD SMITH and the latter, ELWOOD SMITH. Both have become famouse People were rushing in and out of some doors and as I followed them I saw aisles that were jammed with customers. It was Fishman's 10g store. I felt a light touch on my shoulder, and, turning, I saw the fairy, who said gently, The destiny of others you have seen; your own is denied to you.e. One never believes one's own future. In October the Juniors joined with the Seniors in the publication of COMMUNIQUE, the school news- paper. Later in the year, the Seniors had to devote all of their time to the publication of MEMOIR, the yearbook; so the entire newspaper was turned over to the Juniors. The class play, SHE'S MY DAISY, was presented on February 2l.e This play was a splendid success and was really enjoyed by every one. The characters in the play were Aileen Maxey, Thomas Perkins, Anné Hatcher, Frieda Westermann, Alvin Livesay, Alice Mae Wilds, Uley Mam, Margaret Grimes, Robert Winfree, and Ada Mae Bookman, Early in April the Juniors ordered their class rings so that they might be delivered in the fall The climax of the year was reached on May 9, at which time the Juniors entertained the Seniors with banquet and a dance at the Chesterfield Golf Club. We, the Junior Class, feel that we have gained both in knowledge and in the spirit of cooperation. We sincerely hope that we may carry on the wonderful work that the Seniors have left for us to do during the school year 1941-1942. elt AHS cab irs SHO SR xh; 9 j peg LUO TEA. e TT! © os 4 ] ™“ GEE? ena A, insite: ed TUITE Se TTA BS « [- VANeEebaeepeaenett OT REEL qtaebeee haat dae epee eeeetT PH eateeeE eH white ter iad ECpHeUeL AGL, i elie bes i xf MEMOIR th Uisseeepertinneaye etyererigapeeeaene PANNE Tita Cettaen edge tet bete Dgtee(eteast yi CL Tee UTE A Sav TURE HCE OURUL EADS GEEALOM ERNE FERRER ALLERGY sacoanaeainls MT ee “7 (UNE HUTT M E MO | R HHT DLA HELIN “7 WITHA HT JUNIOR CLASS POEM Three years ago we had a task Which we were set to do. Well, after ten days of hurried work and planning, the boat is about to leave for the Philippine Islands with all of those Freshmen aboard. There will be fun fur every one. Let's see what every one is doing. shes dear, I didn't know that Frances Williams and Irvin Lewis had so much ambition, but you can always peep around the corner and see them washing dishes. Probably they are planning for the arrival on the Islands. That walking encyclopedia, also job inventor number one, Gladys Pulley, surely keeps the boat spick and span with the assistance of Billy Stewart. We must say that they make a grand pair togethere We had a swell time last night at the party given in honor of those wonderful sponsors, Miss Ashbrook and Mr. Williams. And would you think that Doris Martin and Bennie Lane could really dance? Well, they proved it. The news was spreading this morning, bright and early, that five very attractive girls slept in one little bed last night. I hear that these girls were Lorraine Leary, Lois Lane, Virginia Tibbetts, Elsie Wood, and Florence Robins. I guess that they had a grand time, but what about the bed? (Our adventures now end on the boat and begin on the Philippine Islands.) We are enjoying every moment of the trip with one exception. Wé are always losing those Thompson Twins, Raymond Reams, James Turner, Bradford Vaden, Earl Ellis, and Calvin Jackson. When we find them, they are always swimming with the native girls. That smart, littlo black-haired girl, Etna Mays, and admirable Margaret Reams surely met some handsome natives. Maybe some day they will go back to the Islands, but we shall not be along that time. The other night we had a weiner roast and also a swimming races Who should win but Jackie Parker and that Romeo, Carl Westermann. The contestants in the race were Helen Phillips, Janice Mann, Jackie Pare ker, Virginia Perkins, and Nancy Massey for the girls, and Jack Rennie Earl Tyler, Carl Westermann, Norman Woodcock, and Clyde Taylor for the boys. Lois Utley, Phyllis Lowman, and Mary Ellen Walker are quiet little girls around Manchester, but they seem to be having a swell time on this trip with us. I bet they caught some of those tall, dark, and handsome fellows on the weiner roast. oof: ‘ : ed URE Oe ns f MAS CoML Pe TETPET LATED sey HWE daeeeeedtecietentte PULL AR EL A mm 219-43 ——————— ee re Sei Se Ne aaa P Ato o sass fenks. Our stay will soon be ended, and what do you think? Hazel Tray- lor and Joyce Snellings were sitting by a little tree all alone, fast asleep. We found them just in time to keep them from sleeping out all night, for this is very dangerous in the Philippines. On a moonlit night under the palm trees whom should we spy but Joan Rothgeb and one of those handsome Filipinos, wooing in Filipino style. Doris Lingerfelt and Doris Scroggs are models in their new bath- ing suits and they are getting a beautiful sun tan. Those two beautiful girls, Eleanor Pannell and Katherine Williams, are proving rivals for all of us. It was not very hard for Minerva Cordle, Mary Belle Johnson, and Randolph Cheatham to change into native clothes, They really have a good time, Guess what I saw the other day? James Craze, Carlton Coover, a nd Thomas Guill were dressed as monkeys watching Mildred Anderson, Herley Gentry, and Barbara Allen doing the Hula while Jean Arthur was preach- ing about bad habits. I wonder if she gets any good results? I hear that Walter King, Gus Bezares, Edward Bell, and Pierce Ashby want to rent a straw apartment and use Irbane Ingram for their servant, Guess what Henry Boschen is doing? He is trying to sell magazine subscriptions to the natives, They buy them, however, and pay with palm leaves, His co-eworkers are Dickie Chalkley and Stuart Cordle. Iris Jackson and Frank Andrews have opened a hamburger stand and are solling scaweed-burgers. Shirley Barley and Katherine Elam must remain on the Islands, be- cause their sun tan is very becoming. You know, John Hines and Herman Austin just cannot leave these native girls alone. I wonder if they will stay here? Of course, we have to have guards and who should they be but Ray-= mond Boyles, that tall, handsome Charles Blackburn, James Chenault, and Alfred Butler. Every minute Shirley Hatcher and Mollie Clarke are trying to do something dangerous, Bernice Blankenship, Florence Andrews, and Irene Kidd are having a good time with Charles Bankert, Raymond Cox, and Earl Dunnavant, Something terrible happened yesterday to delay our trip back home, May Tilman, Wilma Himler, and Mary Chenault broke out with chicken pox and Raymond Wilkinson acted as doctor, Then he broke out with measles. So you see the Philippines are not so different from our own United States after all. iitags ‘ ‘ 2 ed ® LT | Lees Mr Bees soos ierynentotnny: NF i : 9 4 eee ps; , Brg ee nS ae a DELLS tatbenees Say £35.
