Looking back over a period of years during which I have been thrown in close contact with many high school boys and girls I am convinced that the attitude of the youth of today is quite differ- ent from that of some ten or fifteen years ago. The young people of today have all too often lost their cour- age, their individual initiative. They face life defeated from the start because they have no initiative. WThis being true they sit back and wail hopelessly for somebody to come to their assistance. They want to be helped to secure a job. They say, nYou must have pull to get a job today.' Who is responsible for this unfortunate attitude on the part of our American youth? I would say that the fault lies not with the school, the home, nor with any particular organization or group. It seems to me that such is largely the re- sult of economic and social conditionse that have existed during these years. ' f That this is not true of all youths of today is to the credit of that small percentage who have kept up their courage until they have found employment. True perhaps, the job secured was not what they had hoped to make their life's vocation, but it was employe ment. They were neither ashamed nor afraid to start with what some might turn down as insignificant and unworthy of them in their own estimation. A I ' To you whom graduation from high school will mean the end of your formal education, I earnestly beg that you realize few people have been successful because success was handed them on a silver platter, that you develop your courage ,and initiative. 'Do not be afraid to start with what might seem small. It is easier for a person who has been successful in small things to get a better po- sition than it is for one who has never been employed at al1.' ' ' To you who will continue your formal education either inlxigh school or some institution of higher learning you will find that! each year you will be expected to be more selfhreliant. VThers is no better time than the present for you to realize that the habits of work and play which you form during your school career will ine fluence your attitude toward work in life. If the problem assigned seems perplexing and difficult, do not give u too easily. Do not sit idly by and wait for solutions to all of these problems and questions to be handed to you. Develop your own initiative and do some thinking for yourselves. - Are you going to be a quitter before you start? Are you going to sit b ck and say, nIt's no use because I have no pul1'? Are you willing to give the best that is within you to whatever you under- take? WHAT IS YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARD LIEE?
