Basketball The basketball team for the 1940-41 season was a very unpredictable quintet that at times excelled last year's fine team and at other times played very erratic basketball. A review of their record will give you an idea of the ups and downs of the season. The Manhawks were very inconsistent, never winning over five games in a row or losing over three in a row. They would go 'hot' for a few games only to go into a slump. Of their scheduled games the locals won six while losing nine, but during the entire season they won twelve, lost ten and outscored their apponents 685 to 659. Unlike the football team, the Manhawks did not do so well in conference play. In the Tri-Valley Conference they won three, lost five and finished in fifth place. In the Mid-Six Conference they finished in fourth place, winning two and losing four. Nyle Bergstrand and Roger McIntosh were placed on the Tri-Valley all-con- ference second team while Junior Rector was given honorable mention. Nyle Berge trand was placed on the Mid-Six all-conference first team, while Junior Rector was chosen on the second team and Roger McIntosh was given honorable mention. The locals annexed the Delaware County championship for the second consecu- tive year by winning their four games with ease. In winning the tournament the Manhawks displayed their best form of the season, both offensively and defensive ly. In the sectional tournament, held on the home court, the Manhewke were seeded first and were the heavy favorite. After winning their first two games, in which they were decidedly off form, the Manhawks were upset in the final game by the margin of two points. Four letterwinnere will be lost through graduation: Nyle Bergstrand Junior Rector, Bob Arnold and Tom Hattel. Those lettermen who will not graduate are: Roger McIntosh, Bob McIntosh, Dean Young and Virgil Corll. The other mem- bers of the 'first ten' were Micky Barnd and Ira Hatch. The reserves had their ups and downs also, emerging with a .555 percent- age. Of their nine games they won three and lost six. The Junior High, coached by Mr. Blair and assisted by Mr. Koeppel of the High School, won four while losing six. Promising Freshmen who will be varsity materiel next season are: Jack Davie, Don Dutton, Dick Bushnell, Tommy Snyder, Jimmy Williamson, Don Kirschbaum and George Stevens The Record M.H.S. 22 Strawberry Point 27 M.H.E. 22 Strawberry Point 58 M.H.S. 22 Wilson KC.
