The mighty Manhawks rolled1through both the strong and the weak and left an impressive record that will long be remembered. Some of the special accomplishments achieved b the Orange and Black were: They defeated a Cedar Rapids school for the first tim in history, won from Vinton on Vinton's floor for the first time in history, sto ped Vinton on Manchester's floor for the first time in the last six years, won he county tournament for the first time since 19365 also ranked two players in the Honorable Mention division of the State team. I W This year's regular team found Timmons and Bisse l as forwards, Bergstrand at center, McIntosh and Leighton as guards, with some v ry good boys to fill in dur- ing times of need. Such were Rector, Barker, Sloan, B Arnold, Eberhart and Corll. In the Tri-Valley Conference, Manchester ende up in a tie for third place with Vinton, however, Manchester defeated them bot times when they met during the season, also, they scored more points in the Conf rence than Vinton. Cedar Falls, the Conference winners in football, continued to win laurels by also winning the Conference basketball title. Five of the seven games lost this season by the anhawks were dropped in con- ference games. The leading scorers this year were Mully of Cedar Falls with 923 Bissell of Manchester with 88, Griffith of Independence with 823 Fowler of Vinton with 773 and Bergstrand of Manchester with 55. J The Senior members of the squad this year are thi three 'BobsN of the first team: Bob Timmons, Bob Bissell, and Bob Leighton. The second team, seemingly inspired by the feags of the first team, set an impressive record for themselves, crushing six foed and bowing only to three. Barker and Peterson held down the front court with Worll at center, in the back court Eberhart and Dave Arnold did very nicely. Junior High, under Coach Bla1r's experience' supervision, did as well as The could be expected this year. Starting out with a g een and inexperienced team the boys won three and dropped five, but most of ese were lost by only a few points. The starting line-up was Bob McIntosh and Y ung forwards, Hatch center, Frantzen and Barker guards. ' Season Schedule g -l939-l94O- Date Ogpongnt We The! M 65 49 A Parable for Students And in those'days, behold, there came thru the gates of learning a student from afar off. And it came to pass that as the days went by he learned loads of 'what have you'. They that were grouches smiled upon him and gave him the glad hand. Thebooks opened up their pages unto him. And those in the school that were the slackers, and they that spent their days adding to the alibi sheet, were astonished. They said one to the other: Uhhat the dickens? How doth he do it?n And it came to pass that many were gathered together in the hall. And a soothsayer came among them. And he was one wise guy. and they spake and questioned him, saying, 'How is it that this strange student among us accompllsheth the impossiblo?n whereupon the soothsayer made answer: nHe of whom you speak is one hustler. He ariseth very early in the morning and goeth forth full of pep. Ie complaineth not, neither doth he knock. He passeth no opportunity. He is arrayed in purple and fine linen, while ye come forth with eyes half opened and with wits hefogged. Lhile ye gather here and say one to the other: uverily, it is a heck-uva day to work, he is already at work. And when the eleventh hour cometh, he needeth no alibi, the Coffee Den attracteth him not, and the movies he passeth with a look of cold scorn. He smileth alike on the wise and the unwise. He saith not to the principal, 'Behold, they that are in this school are a bunch of boneheads!' Her doth he report that it can't be learned, and then console himself in a UTrue Storyn. He knoweth his course of study, and they that would ridicule him, he squelcheth. They give him the raspberry when he studieth, yet when he goeth forth to class he knoweth all the answers. He hath taken with him two angels: Aspiration and Perspiration. He knoweth whereof he speakethg and he worketh to beat heck. Verily, I say unto you, go and do likewise. N.L.H. 60 QS R.
