At the next contest, the Pre- liminary State Contest also held at Manchester, Bet- ty Jean Hunt and Sophie Baran emerged victorious and they did the same at the Sub-district, held at Cog- gon. The Pre-district at Manchester, at which Sophie Baran again took first, gave her the privilege of competing in the District at West Union. At this contest, the last before the state, Miss Baran re- ceived second place. This is the best declan record of any M. H. S. student for many years. Miss Virginia Kahne coached the members of the humorous and dramatic divisions, while Frank L. Gan- non directed the oratorical speakers. I6
