The local boys nlayed scrappy and spirited football in each game but were unable to conquer their slight- ly heavier foes. The Manhawk line was composed of NMikeH Sury- stul at center, A1 Eberhart and John Swift as guards, Captain Dick Burt and Bd DuBois as tackles and at end were Milton Joslyn and Bob Bissell. At the backfield nositions were Bob Leighton, Gordon Jechelli, Allyn Carrothers, and Roger McIntosh. As the season progressed, Nyle Bergstrand was shifted to center and Umiken Chrystal took Bob Leighton's position. Albert Carrothers also re- Dlaoed John Swift at a guard position and did a very efficient job of halting his opponents. As the Armistice Day same ended, the follow- inm seniors had olayed their last high school football: Burt, Dubois, Chrystal, Hechelli, Al- bert Currothers, Allyn Carrothers, and T. Mhite. IO maslwfbaii Back Rnwg Winters, E. Steffens, Alb. Carrothers, Chrystal, Mr. Belknap, Timmons, Rector, Barker, Sloan, Miller Front How: Bergstrand, Bissell, dechelli, Mullan, Leighton, Eberhart Coach Belknap and his assistant, Mr. Beckman, started the season with four letter men left from the previous season. The boys emerged from their tough schedule with five wins and ten losses, a record of which the players can not be ashamed. During this season a nhelieve it or Nota fact occurred. The Manhawks lost eight games by three points or less. Five of these narrow losses were by one point, and two of these five Lpolnt games occurred during one week, our players bowing to Wilson of Cedar Rapids and Vinton on Tuesday and Friday nights. The Manhawks entered the County Tournament , defeated Dundee ln the first game, but were de- feated by Greeley in the next contest determined by a lone tally. The Manchester team journeyed to Strawberry Point to participate in the sectional tournament, and met Elkader in their first game. They were again defeated by the one point Jinx. Team members who will graduate are: Albert Carrothers, Chrystal, Bechelli, and Mullen. Ted Winters and Russell Miller acted as ath- letic managers during the year. They won five games and lost four, which gives them a rating of .556. Not a bad record for boys just beginning their basketball career! The starting line-up at the beginning of the season found Hatch at center, Mclntosh, Fenton and Roloff, forwards, Corll and Arnold at guard. Soon after the season started, Cloud took over the forward duties with Mclntosh. As only seventh, eighth, and ninth grade boys may play, the team will lose the following players next year: Cloud, Arnold, Fenton, Traner, Corll, Noble, and Krutzer. However, the loss by the junior high will be the high school team's new gain. IL Back Row: Haight, L. Wade, Carradus, C. Barker, Sherman, R. The Pre-district at Manchester, at which Sophie Baran again took first, gave her the privilege of competing in the District at West Union. Bushnell, Lyman, Goodrich, Childs, Ggrligk, Fry, I. Herman ihutd The Manchester Marching band performed very creditahly during the year, doing formation work at football and bas- ketball games with the assistance of Earl Dunn, drum major, and Peggy Ann Roe and Janaan Haug, drum majorettes. The Marching band also participated in a political rally held on the Luther College campus at Decorah, Iowa. Middle Row: Front Row: The Concert Band participated in the Sub-District Mu- sic Contest at Elkader and received a rating of excellent. Among the instrumental groups and soloists, the wood- wind quartette also received a rating of excellent at the Sub-District at Elkader. The following received a superior rating, and so qualified to compete in the District Contest at Monticello: Brass Sextette, Sousaphone solo by Leola Roller, b Baritone solo by Merle Kratzer, and French Horn solo Earl Dunn. Helen Davis will play a Bass Clarinet solo a special audition at the State Contest, because of lack competition. If her audition is satisfactory, she will qualified to participate in the National Music Con- test the latter part of March the Land, in conjunction with the Glee Clubs, presented a concert of contest pieces. The Band also presented a concert the latter part of April, and participated in the County Spring Music Festival at Earlville early in May. At the time the annual goes to press, it is impossible to know how the participants in the District Contest will be rated, but since 811 concerned have worked diligently it is safe to say that they will perform to the credit of M.H.S. Mr. Odegaard is the director of the Land, and should be highly congratulated upon the fine work he has done in developing the musical talent of Manchester. 55 Claim!
