It serves as a symbol of accomplishment, the end of a period of training, but, even more important, it symbolizes the beginning of a new phase of learning. The education which has been given to you by the citizens of your colnmuni ty is going to prove to be your most valuable asset. Thomas Paine cautioned us when he said, What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly . If we are not careful we can all make that mistake in evaluating our public school system. The United States is the only major world power that has attempted to educate all of its citizens. It is the one great factor which has produced and maintained our great nation. During your years in school we have tried to teach you more than facts and fundamental processes. We have tried to teach you how to live a happy, productive, useful life in a democratic society. It is the prayer of every teacher that we have taught by example as well as with books and words. You are going to miss Manchester High School and your Ill y friends. But on the other hand, you are going to meet new an friends, other situations, and have experiences which will be just as rewarding as the ones you have had here. The class of 1956 is especially close to me. I have taught most of you from seventh grade through twelfth grade. - During that time I have come to love and respect you as individuals and as a class. I hope that the friendships which I have enjoyed with you will remain constant through the years ahead. Congratulations on your graduation. My best wishes go with you as you depart from the school which you have helped make such a warm and friendly place. Sincerely yours, 6,5 W. f CQ:-l W. Nelson mga' Sled 6,10 dial' 60:01 1101524

FOOTSTEPS It is significant that commencement holds new horizons for all. Various pursuits of endeavor will lead some to college, others to positions in the business world. Any one of these occupations, in time, will lead you to great accomplishments. You review these formative years of your school life, you then realize you left countless footsteps which reveal the direction of your future livelihood. These indelible impressions can never be forgotten. Good administration, good teachers, good deeds, good reports, good schools, good teams, good will iust doesn't happen. There is, in most cases, a lot of hard work put forth. So it is with planning the future educational needs. The Board of Education has seen fit to become a merged district so they can better function on behalf of the citizens of your school system. Rehabilitation, adding to present building facilities at Mt. Wolf and Manchester, construction of an elementary center in the Conewago area and York Haven-Newberry area, are evidences of a growing area. No, the iob is far from being complete for there is no status quo in the educational field. Therefore, our footsteps will be as memorials long after we as individuals have faded from the horizon. Your efforts then will be put to task in providing adequate education facilities for the communities in which you live. You have a right to reminisce, give thanks, say a prayer for those who have helped you to become a successful person. As you become respectable citizens, the splendid efforts of your teachers will have been rewarded. Our best wishes for all the success and happiness you deserve. May your spirit and enthusiasm be reflected throughout your life. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION 10
