lPAL'S M SSAGE . 1 . 721 fbi' Chili' gf I I 951 3 THE COMMON SCHOOL lS THE GREATEST DISCOVERY EVER MADE BY MAN. QHorace Mannj You are the mature product of our common schools. You have had a very special opportunity. Out of every 1,000 children finishing fifth grade, 900 have the ability to go through high school, 432 do so. This statement means that less than half of the boys and girls who should complete a high school course do so. Since you have had special opportunity, you will be expected to carry greater responf sibility. Your high school course should have given you better insight and under- standing of the world we want tomorrow. ln the future we will not depend upon gadgets and machines, but upon the ability of peoples to live together in teamwork, tolerance, mutual respect, and fair play. Our very life, security, and happiness depend on that fact. Because l have faith in education and in youth, l believe you will work and labor for a better tomorrow when people can live together in honesty and ups rightness regardless of race, color or religion, l congratulate you for taking advantage of your opportunity to complete a high school course. May you always use it for your own betterment and for the betterment of the community in which you may reside, l wish you lots of good luck. MR. lRA Y. BAKER, AB, MA. 6
