GREEN LIGHT 1 9 4 'z A Manchester High School MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL Costly apparatus and splendid cabinets have no magical power to make scholars. ln all circumstances, as a man is, under God, the master of his own fortune, so is he the maker of his own mind. The Creator has so cone stituted the human intellect that it can only grow by its own action, and by its own action and free will, it will certainly and necessarily grow. Every man must, therefore, educate himself. His book and teacher are but helps, the work is his. A' man is not educated until he has the ability to summon, in an emergency, all his mental powers in vigorous exercise to effect its proposed object. lt is not the man who has seen most, or read most, who can do this, such a one is in danger of being borne down, like a beast of burden, by an overloaded mass of other men's thoughts. Nor it is the man who can boast of native vigor and capacity. The greatest of all warriors in the siege of Troy had not the pre-eminence because nature had given strength and he carried the largest bow, but because self discipline had taught him how to bend it. We Need More Serious Moments . . EDUCATION . , KNOWLEDGE . , INTELLIGENCE . . these are all big words and behind them is packed a world of- meaning. Dictionaries tell us that education is the act or process of training, that knowledge is familiarity with doing and learning, and that intelligence is the ability to learn and under- stand. The three are just as closely related as a mother, father and child. To be really educated, one must have a degree of intelligence that will, through knowledge, lead to his ultimate end. Without intelligence, educa- tion means nought and we know that every rational being has an intellect. What are we driving at? lust this! An intellect pre-supposes intelligence. Therefore, we can safely say that if brought out and applied, each one of us is capable of learning and it is in the home and educational institutions that this intellect is nurtured. Isn't it too bad that there are so many today who shrink away from higher forms of education and yet have an immense learning power? They are content to sit back and become stagnant. Yet, there are those industrious persons who are not blessed with such a high degree of intelligence, but who plug away to develop more fully knowledge imparted by education. The tools are at hand ready to work with, but how many will pick them up and become familiar with them? We must do more than merely realize that value of education, we must take advantage of it and the opportunities it brings. Will we, in later years, be among the sorry lot who passed these oppor- tunites by, or will we be among those few who can face the wtorld and its problems with a smile of satisfaction and honestly say, I took advantage of my educationl OUR FACULTY . . Her winning way, her sweet smile, Make the day worthwhile. Mrs. Sikes, our teacher in Math, Has helped to guide us along the narrow path. Musically inclined is she . . Misleany The Year Book Staff Wishes to thank Mr, Spangle tor the guidance he has given our business manager, Dave Halderman. Without his efforts, our finan- cial problems would have been insurmountable, SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS . . LET'S REMINISCE . . Back in '35, a group of shy boys and girls first found their way inside that imposing brick structure . . the school house. lt was a great day for us. We were greeted by Miss Thomas in our first year and it was there we be- gan to learn the meaning of going to school. We left Miss Thomas with a big smile and transferred our childish affection to our second grade teacher, Miss Clint. ln our third year, it wwas on Miss Shepard's desk that we left our shiny, red applesg here we became more and more skilled in the three Rs , . readin', 'ritin' and 'rithmetic Our fourth grade was divided . . some had Miss Howland, while others had Miss Dayton. We found our stay with these teachers to be a very pleasant one. Mrs. Galbraith greeted us with many parties that will never be forgotten, Here, work and play wtere well combined. We were again divided in our sixth year. Miss Gilman and Miss O'Harri- gan prepared us for lunior High. Many of us will never forget those Geogra- phy classes of Miss Gilman's. We found that lunior High was very exciting, Miss Mertz helped' us to make the necessary adjustments, and we began growing up fast . . at least we thought wwe had arrived. Never to be forgotten is the day when we proudly marched into our Fresh- man Home Room. Miss Huntington kept us in line, but willingly supervised our many activities, which made us feel that our social whirl had begun. We like to recall the hay ride and the Vic dances. Our Sophomore year was a pleasant one, although our activities were few in number. Mrs, Lamphier took over in the capacity of Class Advisor in our third year, and our stay with her was a bit stormy at times, but fun. Memories of the Iunior Prom, with the rainbow theme, still linger in our minds. Then some- thing different was added . . a round-and-square dance . . which proved to be a great success financially. The arrival of our class rings was an import- ant event. We were the first class to adopt what we hope will be a standard crest. President . ,. Iay Ge1Se Vice-President ,... Louis Hessney THE CLASS OF '47 As Seen by an Interested Onlooker Ten pretty gals midst sixteen guys . . have at one time or another during the year of l946-l947 added their personalities to that composite mass . . that indefinable bulk or something or other . . Senior Home Room. With frequent warnings of Be discreet from . . well, you know whom . . they have proceeded to preface the days activities in good old 203 and to impatiently huddle near its door for afternoon dismissal. We'l1 mention each one who has remained with us to the bitter end perhaps not by name . . but if you're sharp you'll supply the same. The smallest of all . . shes really quite cute, Has clothes galore and friends to boot. Her hearts all a-flutter these days they say . . Why is it her heart throbs must be so far away? Then there's a demure little lass Who likes to sing, A musical career is at what she's airnin' . . You must have guessed, for it's Irene . . . To beat the Dutch, just can't be done, 'Specially our pretty, blonde, blue-eyed one. She has a sister to take her place . . We're glad of that for she'll leave quite ag space. We have in our midst a nurses aide . . Shes pretty, shes Winsome and, so they tell, Her patients at Clifton scorn getting well. Sophisticated lady, with lots of style, An actress, too, you'll all agree. ' We predict for her in a very short while A prominent place in society. l've another in mind both pretty and witty . . Iingles and rhymes shes writes in a jiffy. Shes never known to shrink from work, She's a friend to all is .... Then theres a girl with that grand old name, She leads us all in a hearty cheer. When her classmates argue and discord is near She remains impartial, treating all the same. ln salesmanship another excels . . Tickets, ads or plain nothing she sells. But she has a domestic nature, too, For knitting and crocheting she loves to do. So full of pep, she'll not lead a dull life . . Which will it be . . saleswoman or housewife? ln scholarship, who is it who tops them all?? To be sure, none other than Dot Vanderwall. Efficiency . . personality . . popularity combined, Such a rare combination you'll seldom find. Now that we've cornered the sugar and spice, let's see what else we can find that's nice. Why, our Class presidents name seems to rhyme with nice, so first of all we give you . . . lay Geise. He's a popular athlete, but his talents vary, .Where did he get such a broad vocabulary? Kirby, how come you throw out such a scare? Come out from behind that horrible glare, For underneath l know, tho l've never been told, You're concealing a very big heart of gold. Coco can play in any game, lust mention the sport, you'll find his name. He's musical too, why, didnt you hear? He'll direct his own orchestra within a year. One by one they come out of the house, To the names of Ducky, Pop-Eye and Smouse. He's needed on the team for he fights with a will, But his heart, they say, is in Shortsville. We've a tall, handsome blonde with curly hair . . Well liked by all, but l do declare He's the silent type . . seldom talks, lust what are you thinking about, Norman Hawkes? Huffy manages all things well From basketball to problems at hand. Let's watch his future . , one never can tell, He may win acclaim throughout the land. fTime out for a bit of free verse, if you please, Theres no rhyme to handle our greatest teasej Such a happy nature should never be squelched . , But there goes that teacher again by George Why must she be so indignant at a few Hee- Hawes ? Ai really good fellow, polite and gay, He'll make his mark as a salesman some day. l'm telling you, never let it be said That a violent temper goes with a hair of red, To contradict such a stated brand We have our proof . . in Hilde-brand. For as people come and as people go, A more amiable fellow w'e'll never know. Chippy's a favorite wherever he travels . . Did you ever listen to all the tales he unravels?
