CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE, SEATED: A. Kindley, C. Carter, Miss Mansfield, Sponsor. STANDING: A. Yeat- ter, D. Wittwer, F. Baker. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students of American schools. Membership is based upon Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. From those who have met the scholastic requirement of a B average, the faculty chooses the members on the basis of leadership, character, and service. Fifteen per cent of the seniors, 10 per cent of the juniors, and 5 per cent of the sophomores are elected to the society. The first step in the organization of the Manchester chapter was to appoint a constitution committee for this local chapter. On December 31. 1959, after the constitution had been approved, Miss Lois Mansfield, the chapter sponsor, received the charter for the Manchester Chapter of the National Honor Society. On April 7, the first twenty-seven members of the Manchester chapter were initiated by the Wabash Chapter of the National Honor Society. 12

This year our principal, Mr. Simmons, organized the Student Council. He believed that the students would bene- fit by having a ruling body to help guide them through their various ac- tivities. The Council consists of a boy and a girl from each homeroom. These honor students were elected by their classmates. Among the Council's various activities, they have done much to provide enter- tainment for the student body during the lunch hour. For example, they have made provisions for dancing, in- formal basketball, and ping-pong. The present system of issuing citizen- ship grades was one of their projects. They have also undertaken the plan- ning for the schedule for after-game dances. STUDENT COUNCIL, Freshmen, FIRST ROW: J. Johnson, A. Ulrey, C. Carter. SECOND ROW: M. King, R. Buckingham, J. For a money-making project, the Council has in- stalled an ice cream machine. The profits from this machine will be used to purchase something for the new school. In the plans for the following year, the Council has been discussing a student directory and a community dinner. The student body has appreciated the efforts made by the Student Council to help provide for the needs of the students.
