MANCHESTER HIGH N. MANCHESTER, IND. The Manchester Pep Song Fight on, Manchester High, We're here to say We'll back our Squire’s team, Ever back them all the way. Our colors lead us on-- Now's the time to do or die. We'll fight for you, We'll see you through, Manchester High. This year has been full of firsts --our first year with a new superintendent and principal at the helm, our first winning football season, our first victorious sectional tourney, our first year to win a speech trophy, our first Student Council, and our first year of National Honor Society. This year is an important last too--our last year at this high school building. Next fall we will make a move for which we have all been waiting--the move into the new high school building. However, a new building does not make a successful high school. A wholesome school spirit like the one that led the Manchester Squires vic- toriously through the sectional tourney, that guided the Student Council, and that led us through all our other firsts is essential in making a good high school. This is the spirit that we must take with us to our new high school to make it successful. The high school students were dismissed to walk to the ceremony, which was held on the site of the new high school. The school song and the national anthem were played by the high school band. Dr. Carl Holl. representing the Man- chester School Board; Ross Briner, heading the Building Corporation; and Herbert Bradley, president of the present Manchester Senior Class turned the first shovels of dirt. The cornerstone laying ceremony for the new high school building was held September 17, 1959. Dr. A. Blair Helman, president of Manchester College, gave the address for this meaningful ceremony. Dr. Helman presented the following thought in his speech. The year 1960 inscribed may well prove one of the significant years of mankind in this rapidly changing world. This building comes of heartache, planning, and struggle with honest doubt. The box was placed in the cornerstone by- Glenn Beery, president of the North Manchester - Chester Township School Building Corporation. TOMORROW QUEEN ANIT CREST DANCE AND CORONATION The Third Annual Crest Dance and Coronation was presented on Dec. 18, 1959. by the Senior Class of Manchester High School. The theme was Winter Wonderland and the stage was con- verted into a starry, snowy winter evening complete with sleigh. This year Miss Anita Burkhart was crowned 1959 Crest Queen by the retiring queen, Miss Sandra Shock. Anita's attendants were Miss Diana McCullough, Miss Kay Bechtold. and Miss Carol Carter. STANDING: A. Yeat- ter, D. Wittwer, F. Baker. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students of American schools. Membership is based upon Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. From those who have met the scholastic requirement of a B average, the faculty chooses the members on the basis of leadership, character, and service. Fifteen per cent of the seniors, 10 per cent of the juniors, and 5 per cent of the sophomores are elected to the society. The first step in the organization of the Manchester chapter was to appoint a constitution committee for this local chapter. On December 31. 1959, after the constitution had been approved, Miss Lois Mansfield, the chapter sponsor, received the charter for the Manchester Chapter of the National Honor Society. On April 7, the first twenty-seven members of the Manchester chapter were initiated by the Wabash Chapter of the National Honor Society. 12 This year our principal, Mr. Simmons, organized the Student Council. He believed that the students would bene- fit by having a ruling body to help guide them through their various ac- tivities. The Council consists of a boy and a girl from each homeroom. These honor students were elected by their classmates. Among the Council's various activities, they have done much to provide enter- tainment for the student body during the lunch hour. For example, they have made provisions for dancing, in- formal basketball, and ping-pong. The present system of issuing citizen- ship grades was one of their projects. They have also undertaken the plan- ning for the schedule for after-game dances. STUDENT COUNCIL, Freshmen, FIRST ROW: J. Johnson, A. Ulrey, C. Carter. SECOND ROW: M. King, R. Buckingham, J. The girls, dressed in formal wear, all participated in the ceremony to install the initiates as members. After the initiation the girls, holding lighted candles, formed a recessional in the darkened church, ending a very- impressive ceremony. 20 FRESHMAN INITIATION The annual Sunshine Freshman Initiation is an occasion eagerly awaited by the Seniors and dreaded by the Freshman girls. This year the theme of Different Nationalities was chosen. Senior girls and their Freshman sisters. who were costumed appropriately for the nation which they were to represent, met at the school early in the morning. The day was climaxed by a parade, supper on Main Street, and a movie. The tired Freshman girls and exhausted Senior girls both agreed it was fun------but never again! We’re from different countries-- As different as can be. But, oh, you mighty Seniors. We all bow down to thee! Initiates B. Leedy, M. Ihnen, J. Hen- drix, N. Shanahan, C. Sutton and A. Inner Willy, the play presented by the Juniors of 1959, is the story of an arrogant apparition who pops out of thin air to goad sedate, somewhat stuffy Willoughby into unbending and being himself. Under the solicitious eyes of his three maiden aunts, Wiloughby has for too long been dutifully following the wishes of his aunts. Finally with Inner Willy's help, Willoughby spurns these impositions and even asserts himself enough to notice girls. Willoughby's next- door neighbor, Marybelle Turner. An orchid for the hard- working director, Mrs. Ted Hill, presented by energetic student director, Judy Gott- mann. Harvey, the play presented by the Seniors of 1960, is about Elwood P. Dowd and his friend Harvey, an imaginary rabbit who is over six feet tall. The play concerns the hilarious attempts of Elwood's sister to remove Harvey, the cause of much embarrassment. EVERYWHERE Soaping at Halloween isn't as fun any more when you have to clean up the mess you make. Mrs. Vought, the school nurse, visits school to keep a check on the health of the students. THERE ARE MAN SCHOOL STUDENTS SIBILITIES, LEND AND ENTHUSIASM GROWING. The operation of visual aids, as well as assuming the duties of assistant librarian, are preparations for adult responsibility. All the high school students were dis- missed from school to witness the his- toric groundbreaking at the new high school. CHESTER HIGH TAKING REQPON- ING THEIR HELP LEARNING AND Hundreds of fans of the Squires turn out at athletic events to cheer the team to victory. Many of these fans are high school students whose enthusiasm is genuine and never-dying. Since dancing has been offered during the noon hour, this program has become very popular. Manchester speech students have been successful in winning many ribbons and trophies. Planning a speech tourney, like the one held in Manchester on January 31, takes a lot of planning and hard work. PUBLIC LIBRARY MEMORIES OF THE PLAY, THE TRIP - WILL When the Senior class met in the fall of 1959, we chose Pres. L. Bazzoni, V.P. L. Greer, Sec. S. Miller, Treas. S. Carter, and Reporter A. Strickler to guide us through our last year of high school. Our sponsors were Mr. Freed, Mrs. Faith Hill, Mrs. Ringenberg, and Mrs. Kester. Early in the fall the magazine sale was launched. This vic- torious campaign was climaxed by a delicious turkey supper. On November 6 and 7 the class presented the comedy hit Harvey under the direction of Mrs. Faith Hill and Judy Gottmann. The Senior Fish Fry on March 12 added another chunk to our growing treasury. On April 24 when a train bound for New York and Washington, D. C. pulled out of the railroad station at Servia, we wouldn't have traded places with ANYBODY. 28 MIXED CHORUS All things shall perish from under the sky-- Music alone shall live, never to die. The first game proved to be a disappointment to the team as well as the many fans when we were defeated by one touchdown by Oak Hill, a newly consolidated school. The score was 19-13. But with a bit more practice and determination the team rolled over Columbia City 41-13. This victory put the Squires on the bandwagon and they were ready and determined in their next game with Warsaw. This game was an excel- lent display of the team's'ability and spirit, for they came out on top again with a score of 25-19. The team and fans were greatly disap- pointed when the game with Wabash was canceled, but this gave the boys an extra week of practice before they tangled with the much- Monroe--L. End PAGE MISSING season? Naturally the credit goes to the hard- working team, the excellent coaching staff, and the loyalty and backing of the many fans. The Manchester fans are proud of our team not only for their ability on the floor, but for the sportsmanlike manner they display and the good name which they have given to Manchester High School. In their black or red vests and white shirts, the Pep Club presents a solid front to all opposing teams. By their yells and cheers, they spur the team on to victory. Whether it be a football or basketball game or a track meet, fans of the Manchester Squires turn out in large numbers to watch the Squires play and encourage the teams. Lines to buy tickets are long and-the stands and bleachers are crowded. The support given by the fans is loud and enthusiastic. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that our Squires are so successful. HARMON A. BALDWIN B.S. Butler University M.S. Butler University Indiana University A good system need have students who have a keen desire to learn, not just the routine assigned things, but all of those things that will lead one to a full, complete life. These students must be taught by inspired teachers who have been provided with the necessary tools with which to teach. These students and teachers must be supported in their endeavors by an enthusiastic administration and a concerned public who are convinced that the greatness of tomorrow's world can be a reality only if today's students are properly prepared to assume the roles that maturity will bring. May this be the goal of the North Man- chester-Chester Township Schools? Harmon A. Baldwin V. A. SIMMONS Wabash College B.S. Indiana University M.S. Indiana University As we move into the new decade I960, we are privileged and grateful for the opportunity to move into the new high school building--a long-awaited dream of so many becoming a reality. Facilities alone do not make for a successful school. You must have an enthusiastic, cooperative student body work- ing with a professional, qualified staff along with the facilities for a successful operation. Although the class of 1960 will not directly share in the use of the new building, they have played their role quite well. In this year of transition, through their example and leadership, we do have the en- thusiastic and cooperative student body ready and worthy of this move. To you--Class of 1960--we offer our most sin- cere thanks for this cooperation spirit and leader- ship. From all of us, we wish you the best of luck in the life ahead. V. A.
