VVhen this class entered high school, it had reached its ripest stage of green- nessg nevertheless its members showed their determination and willingness to do good work. The other classes did not think much of this class, but the t'freshies . thought it was composed of ideal students. During the Sophomore and junior years, although the class wasnlt nearly so large, it assumed its responsibilities and always stuck together. Members of this class have often held outstanding positions in many school activities. Since this class has always been such a happy-go-lucky group, its social affairs have been very successful and happy occasions. 'llhe Juniors honored the Seniors with the annual Junior-Senior reception which was one of the best ever given. At the end of another year the juniors look forward to the last chapter of their high school life, and hope to be Seniors in every sense of the word. It has had a Shock for a very long time, but it is always warmed up by a Heeter. Furthermore, who would express a doubt as to the Sophomore boys' not being high in Hi-Y? They are noted for their chivalry and studious tempera- ment. The girls compose the smallest committee in Sunshine Society, yet they work hard and always come out a Peg and a Warble tWarvelj ahead of the rest. 'l'he Students chose a plan of student government similar to that used in the Central High School at Evansville. 'llhe Student Council is composed of representatives from each class, chosen by the members of that class. There are six senior representatives, three boys and three girls, four juniors, two boys and two girls, and one representative from the sophomore and freshman classes. At First only the three upper classes had the power to vote, but this year the constitution was amended in order to give the freshman representative the right to vote. All cases and problems coming up before this organization are carefully considered before any action is taken. 'llhe Council tries its best to give everyone a square and honorable deal. VVhile not perfect in every way, the Council has done well in keeping law and order in the school, and in co-operating with the faculty. Max Kraning is the head prefect of the boys this year, and Dorothy llayes is the head prefect for the girls. llesides the members on the council, there are the two faculty members, Miss llotkin, and Mr. Ogden, the principal. one of whom is present at every meeting of the Student Council. Porn' Tln'rly-fam l unshine iociety HE Sunshine Society is a state-wide and nation-wide organization. Spread- ing sunshine should be, and is being made by Sunshine Girls, a world-wide project. Burt Wade, another suitor, attempted to force Gailya to marry him, but she was saved by an escaped convict, Trusty jim. Jim later returned in disguise to work as gardener, and when Gailya dis- covered his identity, she was sure that he was her father. Burt's threats to dis- close Jim's identity forced Gailya to promise to marry him, but on hearing this, Jim gave himself up and Burt's sister persuaded him to free Gailya from her promise. jim's innocence was finally proved, and Gailya was happily married to Royal, Many laughs were furnished throughout the play by the negro servant and the scenes between the maid and the butler. All the parts were well acted, and the play was enjoyed by all. The success ful work of the characters was the result of the careful and efficient direction of Miss Ruth Barwick, our English teacher. bu -J Page Forty g- - V - ., . v aa I Avi l A l Q 7' ' - ' ft Athletics , ffg 5 L PW i'ff 'f ,-11... s H rmzg .1 '.1 ,. P hillip Zoerecher Acceptance .................................... Roy Roudebush, Assistant State Superintendent Introduction of Guests ............................................ Superintendent Charles E. Cook Music Furnished by High School Band and Orchestra-W. D. Koile, Director Page Ififgy-three , l l '61 Big' :AW r r' Q4 g Z giistory of the Qbroject N September of 1926, the present School Board and Superintendent conceived I the idea that a playground should be purchased on which a school could later be erected to accommodate the children who were at that time housed in the Col- lege. That fall the present site was bought in the name of Superintendent Cook, who immediately turned it over to the School Board. The lots were bought for a sum of 35,150. Later, by condemnation proceedings, the east part of the lot was added. At this time we are cleaning and leveling the four east lots, hoping to turn the wilder- ness into a usable playground. Henkel 81 Hanson were employed as architects and engineers. After several lay-outs the Board decided on a plan, but we had no money with which to build. Prof. L. D. Ikenberry, Dr. G. D. Balsbaugh, and Charles H. Olinger were called to form a company in order to finance the building. This was done by making a bond issue of 378,000. The bonds were approved by a bonding firm in Indian- apolis and bought by the Indiana State Bank of North Manchester who sold them to the patrons of our community. Bids were opened on january 29, 1929. Contracts were awarded to: Charles Urschel, General Contractor ................................ ........ 3 53,858.50 Manchester Heating Sz Plumbing Co .......... ..... 1 2,858.00 Charles Ruppel, Electric Contractor ............................... . 783.50 Peabody Seating Company for Furniture ........................ ..... 1 ,450.00 Standard Electric Time Company for Program Clock ................ 502.00 Charles Urschel for grading and extra cement walk ................ 1,000.00 Indiana School Supply Company for Window' Shades and Playground Equipment ............................................................ 476.00 Total Cost of Plant and Ground ............................................ 378,362.00 The bond issue was 378,000.00. The value of taxable property is 34,009,505. The tax levy for this building is 20 cents on each 3100. The building is sixty-eight feet wide by one hundred fifteen feet long. There are eight class rooms, one of which has been made into a play room. The pri- mary rooms are complete primary departments, equipped with cloak rooms, toilet rooms, drinking fountains, and everything necessary for children to have a mod- ern home living room. There are office rooms and a library on the second floor. On the first floor, there is a beautiful rest room for parents and children. This is one of the features of the building. There are two shower roomsuavailable for grade children's use as well as for our high school athletic teams. There is a large playground east of the building on which is located our high school athletic Page Fifty-four V I v I 5 1 V 4 I I 4 l A ,i-.Q 1 I I I gwvi W A -li I ,. .I Q U -L i +- field.
