A trike race, games, movies and a picnic filled up a rainy Friday, as well as the Spartan Spoketacular annual bike race and the Kenapocomoco Players ' pro- duction of BUS STOP. Early Saturday morning, brave canoe racers took a chilly ride down the river. Later in the day, MC students could enjoy a soccer game, an Ultimate Fris- bee tourney, games, an ice cream social and a disco. The weekend came to an end with a special Sunday Celebration and an out- door rock concert with Jericho Harp. Finally, an end to peeling paint and unpadded seats! Cordier Auditorium has arrived. In services held on September 23, 1978, the Cordier Auditorium was formally dedicated. Long awaited by the college community, the auditor- ium features continental seating, spac- ious meeting areas, a large semi-thrust stage with a hydroUcally controlled orchestra pit, a fully electric ligliting system, and ample areas for building and storing scenery, costumes, and props. Speaking at dedication ceremonies were the Hon. Andrew Young, ambas- sador to the United Nations, and Dr. Howard Sottenberger, former direc- tor of the Foreign Service. Both men were former students of Dr. Andrew W. Cordier, a Manchester professor, diplomat, statesman, facilitator, and peacemaker. The neophytes were greeted by cam- pus pals, upperclassmen who led small groups in campus tours and other ac- tivities to familiarize the new students with life at MC. Dances, simulation games and informal group discussions filled the days and helped the freshmen get to know each other. The week began with a special TNITO and ran full speed into the weekend, with ac- tivities every night. Some events were a Wednesday night Open Union, a bon- fire pep rally Thursday, and a Home- coming dinner Friday night. Entertain- ment on Friday and Saturday evenings included games, a movie, a perfor- mance of BRIGADOON, and a dance featuring a live band. Saturday was scheduled for coffee hours, reunions and alumni ceremonies. Sports fans enjoyed the Alumnae Ten- nis Classic, the soccer game against lUPU of Fort Wayne and the football g ame with Taylor. The Lerner-Loewe musical drama of love, mystery and a bit of magic came to life October 20 and 21 with talented actors, dancers and musicians, creative sets, and au- thentic touches such as real Scottish costumes, Scottish accents and a bag- piper. The efforts of over forty cast mem- bers, twenty musicians and an equally large production staff combined to produce BRIGADOON. Scott Strode contributed his talents as director, with musical direction and conducting by James Baldwin. Carol McAmis was associate musical director and Larry Life was choreographer. The Scottish accents were painstakingly coached by Mary Rhynard. BRIGADOON attracted an audience from the North Manchest- er community as well as from campus, and proved to be a very popular pro- duction. 24 Top: Barry Coe, Gladden Gross, Randy Clinker and Steve Viehweg perform a Scottish sword dance. In keeping with the theme Phases of Black Life, the week was celebrated on Manchester campus with a full schedule of black educators, artists, films and other spe- cial events. The programs were open to the public as well as to MC students. The week began with a program by the Corine Morse Williams Dance Group and an informal discussion at AAFRO House with Myron Chenault of Bowling Green University. Later in the week, Halisi Shauri of Northwest- ern University of Chicago spoke at AAFRO House. The movies LADY SINGS THE BLUES and THE AUTO- BIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITT- MAN were shown, and North Man- chester residents were treated to a poetry reading by poet Ethridge Knight. While the 1979 squad had its disappointing moments, things improved steadily throughout the season and the Spar- tans closed out with a 4-5 record, a vast improvement over the past several seasons. Under the direction of Coach Jack Jarrett and his assistants Jim Gratz, Roland Fletcher, Charles Miller, Rick Troxel and Bob Richards, the Spartans came smoothly together as a team to make the most of individual talents. One especially talented individual was All-American senior Dan Hoffman. Whether filling a defensive slot or de- pending on defense to open up space for his offensive maneuvers, Hoffman was a huge asset to the team. In addi- tion to Hoffman, five other seniors contributed talentswhich will be missed next year: record-setting pass receiver Mike DeGeeter, Prentiss Lea, Scott Mannering, Kevin Buchanan, and Steve Nadolny. From all indications, the re- turning Spartans should be able to come up with some strong efforts to fill the gaps left by these six seniors. 41 Page 40, bottom left: Coach Jarrett and President Helman think about sour grapes, green apples and lemonade during a lull in the action. The first half of the season saw only one win, a close 5-4 contest over Marion in the Spartans ' fourth outing. Things gradually got sweeter for the relatively young team as the year pro- gressed, and they scored three wins in the last four games. lU-PU fell to the Spartans 2-1 , fol- lowed by a Homecoming win by for- feit over St. Joe. The Spartans closed with their biggest win of the season, a 5-0 shutout over Indiana Tech. Another sophomore, Judy Watson, followed Jackson in both categories with 68 kills and 64 blocks. Freshmen Melissa Swartzel and Karen Beck also contributed. Swartzel was third on the squad in kills with 44 while Beck was third in blocks with 50. Watson topped the team in service con- sistency with 97% of her serves being good. With only five men, the Spartan wres- tlers could not be competitive as a team. Coach Gratz and his wrestlers were far from idle, however; the men went through regular workouts to get into shape and perfect technique so that they could compete on an individ- ual basis. As the season went on, sev- eral individual victories were scored. Andy Meyer placed third, and Stan Mills and Rick Barnes took fourth in their respective weight classes in the HBCC. Meyer and Barnes placed third in the Franklin Tourney. The highlight of the season came during NAIA Dis- trict 21 competition, when Meyer worked his way to a very respectable second place finish. Auditions for those groups are held in the fall, and the rest of the year is spent in practice and perfor- mance of various styles of music. WBKE calls itself alternative radio, with good reason. There are obvious reasons— WBKE is owned and operated by Manchester College and is fully student run— and there ' s more. Pro- gramming on WBKE-FM is specifically designed to meet the needs of the North Manchester area by offering a variety of music and information not avail- able on most radio stations. Tlie format includes country, jazz, folk, progressive, top forty, and classical music along with entertaining and informative taped pro- grams. Community desires rank high on the list of priorities, and the station allows the maximum of student partici- pation possible. WBKE-AM operates on a carrier cur- rent, and broadcasts only to the college campus. WBKE-AM is a free-form radio station. Alternative radio? Yes. indeed! Classes here are often small, and this invites an informal atmosphere and free discussion between students and in- structors. The faculty and staff at MC are generally responsive to stu- dents ' needs, willing to discuss class material and requirements or simply to provide a listening ear when it is most needed. Informal relationships between students, faculty and staff are also fostered out of class. Besides ful- filling their professional responsibili- ties, many faculty and staff mem- bers are involved in clubs, activity groups, special events, informal discussion gatherings, and intramurals.
