' GETTING IT TOGETHER ' MANCHESTER COLLEGE ' AURORA ' n-11 NORTH MANCHESTER, INDIANA Avoiding I.D. pictures is just part of the fun of Freshman Orientation. Feehng foot-loose and fancy-free five guys attempt to capture a fugitive fris- bee. Some girls will do anything for a buzz. Sharon Knechel goes bananas over a phone call. The campus provides spots for free music. They seem to be ' seeing it together. ' The joys of a warm spring day bring a i smile to Lee Ann Davis. ' FITTING TOGETHER ' IT Taking a break from the May Day ac- tivities, Lois Wong pauses to smile. Whether you just watch or actually par- ticipate the best part of campus life is being with friends. Togetherness is a great experience on campus too ! Just ask Jean Hazelwood and Dale Kahn! When the games prove uninteresting, John Peiffer and Paul Gilmore avert their gaze to another exciting sport- girl watching. Participants in the May Day bike-a- thon stir up some dust as they round the curve. An unidentified child Kcasso visit- ing the campus for Little Brother Little Sister Weekend pauses from his finger painting to pose for the photo- grapher. ' BRINGING US TOGETHER ' We all remember them. The times we gathered for hall parties, football games, May Day festivities, convos, and club meetings are stUl vivid memories. Whether your special events were late night early morning giggle par- ties, the struggle to get out of bed in time for that eight o ' clock class, or studying until dawn for a chemistry test the experiences were universal. The campus happenings brought us together. Make that shot count! Maybe it will help brighten up those faces. Compromising on field positions, Mike Reed and friend attempt some pitch- ing practice. This was the 87th Commencement Exercises at MC. Receiving their long-awaited degrees were: 282 Seniors, 19 two-year stu- dents, 1 3 graduate students, and an honorary degree awarded to Dr. Anna Beahm Mow. The Commencement address was pre- sented by Professor Hans J. Morgenthau who spoke on man ' s inherent need for adaptation in modern society. Sunday, May 23rd, proved to be a happy day for all involved. As the grad- uating class left the field, they remem- bered the good times they ' d shared. Upper left: A sea of caps await their turn to shake President Helman ' s hand and receive their diplomas. Wonder if they find themselves guessing at what gourmet ' s delight Tliey ' U be served. Summer orientation provides an op- portunity for many of the new fresh- man and parents to become acquainted with the customs of Manchester. The orientation also introduces people to people. During the orientation new students toured the campus, met in sessions on financial aid and adjusting to campus life. Afterwards the students returned home ready to face the upcoming year. Bottom: Norm Waggy speeds along to a first place in the bicycle marathon. May Day 1976 gave everyone, facul- ty and students alike, a chance to relax a little from classes. Friday, May 1, classes were cancelled in honor of the festivities. Events ranged from a trike race on Friday to a semi-formal dance Saturday evening. Somewhere in between were co-ed tug-o ' -wars, canoe races, a bicycle marathon, and a picnic. The Kenopocomoco Players contri- buted a dramatic atmosphere to the weekend with their presentation of The Crucible on both Friday and Saturday nights. 16 ■j ii ' '  «?!. While some students enjoyed the programs, others found them a time to squeeze in some studying or sleep- ing, indicative of the typical college audience. Top; Despite audio trouble, and the pres- sures put on a last minute speaker. Doctor M. Aslam Khan Naru presented his talk in fine fashion. Above: One of the more ex- citing Senior Series convocations of fall term was David Bibee ' s, which emphasized the theme of Belonging. Coach Jarrett ' s January trip to Warsaw, and of course, Bud Tully ' s dramatic recital of that age-old story, RINDERCELLA. Saturday morning parents enjoyed the Presidents Reception and coffee with professors. Saturday afternoon parents and stu- dents saw Manchester pitted against Defiance in a close football contest. Above right: President A. Blair Hel- man welcomes parents. Above: An un- identified parent gets help from Jenny Mahan. Above: Registration was enjoyable for some students and their parents as Sue Allbaugh and her folks demon- strate. 20 After three weeks of concentrated study, fondly known as January term, all students thoughts were on January break. Wliile students crammed for finaJs-IT started. As the snow fell and fell some prophetic students declared, while others laughed. We ' ll be snowed in! The smiles turned to frowns as the snow piled higlier. High- ways drifted shut, country roads dis- appeared, and Wabash County came to a stand still. While students were frantically looking for their cars under mounds of snow other more unfortunates had car trouble in such places as Florida. As heat was turned down, long underwear, sweat shirts, sleeping bags, and amiy blankets were out of the closets where they had been since the last retreat. The Union continued to serve the students who remained on campus. While some students braved the snow in caravans others were generous- ly offered homes in the community. Even though we were stranded and away from our families our morale was kept high by our friends who quickly became our second family. The to- getherness we felt during the blizzard of 1977 will make this a year we ' ll never forget. And again complained that there ought to be a class titled, NON-AP- PRECIATION OF LITERATURE 101 , a class studying why a book bores us. The class would do a well re- searched term paper on, Why I can ' t stand ZORBA THE GREEK. Yet re- alizing that was exactly what Zorba was trying to say. Perhaps we are not meant to appre- ciate our experiences, friends, and typical college life styles, until after we have passed through those hallowed halls and entered the world beyond. Tom Dooley once remarked, If you light a candle in a very dark room, it shines a long way . . . As the days of our future pass into present, isn ' t it nice to know that diere will always be an adventurous idealistic student who will react to the sign the maintenance man posted on die dormitory wall: Why is this light left on day and niglit? With a neatly printed sentence: Because it is the only source of heat. Far left : Sharing a drink with his friend, Steve Augliinbaugh relaxes in the domi. Affectionately known as The Barn, this structure has seen more of the events that have shaped Manchester College, than any of us that presently inliabit its hallowed halls. Twice a week the students and faculty enter and seat . themselves to escape the never-ending barrage of classes and late assignments. That bi-weekJy learning experience in the gym is better known as convocation. The grad student chuckles and notes in silence, No more. The Undergrad, perplexed, runs in circles screaming, Why must 1 waste an hour, when I can devote tliat to my paper! (Which never gets done anyway, and is usually late!) Yet, even thougli there is a constant series of complaints, there isn ' t a student on campus who hasn ' t learned some- thing from a convocation. It could be the fascination of an area never explored before. It could be the awe of discover- ing the true emotions of a departing senior everyone thought they knew, until he revealed liis true self in a senior series convocation. Manchester College doesn ' t roll up its sidewalks. Entertainment is spon- sored by UPC and other concerned or- ganizations. Some of the highlights of this year were Meagan McDonald in concert, Paul Genii ' s pool cxliibitions, and the grass roots concert. Artist lecture series offered cultur- al entertainment for students and tire community including the Cincinnati Ballet, and Gulliver ' s Travels presented by Daedelus Productions. Tire music department ' s recitals provided an educational study break for the students. T.N.l.T.O. added a spark to campus life. This year ' s entertainment includ- ed the ever popular Ikenberry date auction. Many of the cold winter nights found friends gathered together eating popcorn, drinking hot chocolate, watching t.v., sharing high school memories, and looking at yearbooks. Above: Delegates confer before voting in the mock convention. 3T ORGANIZING No man is an island unto himself the old phrase goes proving that peo- ple are drawn together. Many are drawn together because of common interests or goals most of- ten expressed in the formation of club, organizations, or councils. MC is no exception to this rule and the campus clubs are as varied as the students themselves. Top: The union parking lot as seen on a snowy day, just before dawn. A third year English major named Glen Hostettler was elected to the il- lustrious position of RC President, a dubious honor awarded only to the elite of the Ikenberry RC ' s. Manchester College maintains a pol- icy of not permitting fraternity hous- ing. Ikenberry breeched that policy this year with the institution of the Loyal Order of (Demented) Lumberjacks. A society wliich is devoted to the pres- ervation of an endangered species, the flannel work shirt, and whose pass- word is, Tm a Lumberjack and I ' m OK. ' However, in keeping with the inde- pendent tradition of ol ' Ike many of the residents still maintain even as they proceed to their next target, the the woods of the Tall Oaks, Lm not a Lumberjack, and I ' m stiU OK. The ' men of Ike ' pose on their newest toy. 34 CALVIN ULERY HALL Constructed as a men ' s dorm in 1949 is Calvin Ulery, otherwise known as the Manchester College Water Works. Their motto: Why not be wet? Passers by must constantly be on the look-out for buckets of faUing water and flying water balloons. Captioned is the Head Foreman, Sharon Knechel. and a cast of thou- sands, otherwise known as her fellow residents. Notice the smUes, guess who got it this time? Relaxing in the lounge are Delmos Keeney, left, and Beth Kurtz, riglit. 35 GARVER HALL Ah, Carver Hall, the first and larg- est co-ed dorm on campus. Its resi- dents are of such a collection of back- grounds and beliefs that they couldn ' t settle on a single dorm name. Instead, the dorm members identify with an assortment of names to include the Crazy Ladies (the only women ' s tid- dly-wink team in the world), Medium HI (survivors of Middle Earth), the Penthouse (what else from the highest women ' s floor?). Taj Maiial (as unus- ual as its name imphes), Animal King- dom (otherwise known as the Man- chester College Corps of Engineers), and Bite a Thi (true connoisseurs of chicken legs). 36 Oakwood Hall is the oldest wom- an ' s dorm on the Manchester College campus. The residents maintained that tradition this year by instituting such old fashioned events as a carmel apple dip for Breakaway, wliich is not to say that the residents are old-fashioned. Second floor became the first floor of the women ' s dorms to institute the new alternative visitation pohcy of 80 hours a week. The reason for the peace and quiet . . . the leader of the pack, Paula Dul- hanty, the humble, quiet, and bashful (?) RC. Unfortunately for some the dark- ness of night never slows the activity in East Hall. For them the night is as in- teresting as the day. The angelic, attractive, and inno- cent (?) women of East Hall are also quite mysterious. For example, the time the residents were organized into tomato and water balloon squads and repelled the advances of serenading freshmen, with the help of four teddy bears and a hand puppet named Fromp, who serve as the unofficial dorm mascots. As another example, take the times they have locked their RA s out of their rooms and hidden the keys under their doors. The women of East also have unique cooking habits, like creating corn flake crumbs by care- fully inserting corn flakes into the pillows of those who are engaged to be married-truly a golden event. The women of East are also health conscious. Nightly, one will hear cho- ruses of the song Chicken Fat played to motivate the women to exercise for the sake of health. Truly, the sun rises in the east, but one other thing is certain: It never sets! However, these feeble attempts are always ruined by Schwalm Hall ' s RJiine March when they sere- nade all the women ' s dorms and pa- rade up and down the college streets like storm troopers. That one activity, one niglit each year, always creates an unfavorable impression of the dorm. Yet, we the staff of the AURORA are going to show you another side of the dorm. Schwalm is famous for its athletic consciousness, because the ma- jority of the dorm residents are ath- letes. Yet these same residents volun- teer their services each year to work with handicapped children in a special Olympics. Schwalm Hall also has its own or- chestra. Many members play musical instruments of some sort, and occas- ionally, if near the dorm, one might hear the strains of music played of in- dividuals like Prentiss Lea, or Terry Brandon, or the classical piano of Lee Lynch. Ah, Schwalm Hall, there ' s hope for you yet! Top: Dorm President, Greg Koehlin- ger. Above: Dorm Council (seated) Mark Lisak, Dan Trachsel, Mike Bech- tol, Stan Zanetti, Dannv Pierce, Mike DeBord. Members of SBA met twice monthly to discuss law related issues and legal careers. During the year, SBA spon- sored a ride-along program with the Fort Wayne Police Department, inter- views with the County Prosecutor, area lawyers, and MC Graduates who are now in law school. The year also included a number of court visits which allowed members to see the legal process first hand. The SBA extends best wishes to its advisor. The group consists of interested mem- bers of the college, led by Dr. William Eberly, who are willing to put time and effort into improving and main- taining our natural environment. In tlie past the group has been involved in setting up the college nature reserve, Koinonia by renovating the lodge and planting hundreds of trees to help re- store the natural beauty of the area. The group has also been leaders of na- ture hikes for elementary school chO- dren. Besides these kinds of special ac- tivities, the group meets weekly to lis- ten to special speakers in special inter- est areas and also to participate in spe- cial presentations, projects, and field trips. 52 ACS American Chemistry Society keeps students informed on new careers and innovations in the fields of science and medicine. We, the 1976-77 AURORA STAFF have braved the deadlines, added life to dry words, and reached ever so deeply into the dark cob-webbed clos- ets in the back of our minds, in an at- tempt to bring all of you this docu- mentation of a year ' s activities. The office is quiet now and bears no evidence of the spilled coffee, do- nut crumbs, the mountains of pop cans, the tons of mistake-laden paper, and the boxes containing photographs of countless hundreds of nameless faces ; awash in a sea of glossy black and white. Neither does it reflect the constant clatter of typewriters, the droning of a hundred voices, all speak- ing at the same time about a hundred different subjects, and the countless sleepless nights encountered by all of us who accepted this assignment. Yes, we poked a little fun, but do you know of a better way to begin those memories of time now passed, than to prime them like the well on Grandstaffs ' fann, with a couple min- utes of straight thought or verbaliza- tion of some rather nostalgic memories hung on a hanger in that dusty, dirty, dark, old closet in the back of all our minds? The main goal of MFU is to im- prove its members pubhc speaking ability. This is accomplished through competition and public service speech- es. Public service speaking consists of after dinner speaking and theatrical cuttings. Manchester College students also judge and coach local high school speech teams. This year Ruth Davis was recog- nized with an award for her service; Robert Butler received the novice award; and Mary Rliynard received the membership award. 59 Circle K, an offshoot of Kiwanis, serves the community and campus. This year the organization adopted the child care center as one of their projects. Each week students go to the center and entertain the children. They also purchased a radio, a record player, repaired toys, set up Christmas decorations, and winter proofed the windows for the center. Circle K ' s glass crushing project moved to a new location this year. By crushing glass they help the communi- ty economically and ecologically. On campus the club sponsored dances in the spring and the fall, pro- vided hot chocolate during finals, and handed out sport schedules. For the first time this year Circle K collected money for diabetes as well as their annual Walk-a-thon for the Amer- ican Cancer Society. Circle K officers: Bob Stellner, Pres.; Jane Lemmon, Sec. It was made up of a wide variety of the young and the old. There were thirteen seniors who pro- vided the much needed leadership, and also several freshmen who held starting positions this year. The Spartan defense finished sec- ond in the conference in the total de- fense in allowing opponents just 196 yards per game, and also ranked well up in the top ten in the country in pass defense allowing only 63 yards per game. Eighteen of MC ' s 90 points for the year were scored on defense. On offense, the Spartans averaged 225 yards per game. It was a year of ups and downs and was the best season since 1972. Team unity and spirit and unity were high. The 13 seniors on the team will be missed, but with the return of an out- standing nucleus of underclassmen, the football fortunes of MC are looking up for 1977. 1 .. ' . Coach Fletcher, after his first sea- son coaching at MC, hopes the young team will have a better season next year. MC will not lose any players for next year, so it should sport a strong effort. Lack of experience due to the short playing season caused many of the team ' s de- feats. However, all players added depth to their various skills which made the difference at tiie end of the season. The will to win and an over- whelming sense of team spirit com- bined to help the team capture a sec- ond place finish in the Small College State Volleyball Tourney. With a 1 2-8 season record, the team feels that the win-loss record is not the only impor- tant thing in sports. Pride in learning and playing as a team is of greater im- portance. Although the Junior Varsity season was not a winning one, the women gained a close unity under assistant coach, Roger Hirschy. Individual skills were improved and the team gathered momentum as the season progressed. Ne.xt year these players should continue tq improve and keep the team building. Hitting and fielding were good though, and two of the games were lost by just one run. 92 ' WOMEN ' S TENNIS Far left: Peering intensely, Jan Smaltz watches to see if her serve is in. A combination of not playing up to potential and the inany injuries that plagued the team this year resulted in an even 6-6 season record. But. much was learned from the season ' s experiences to help the team grow and have a more successful season ne.xt year. The women ' s coach- es feel that the team this year had a super spirit and comradship that, it v as hoped would never be lost. Leading scorers for the Manchester team were Jan Smaltz, averaging 15.7 points per game; followed by Peg Plumnier who averaged 12.6 points per game. NTRAMURAL SPORTS Everyone needs time out to work off all those frustrations of academic life and to just go out and plain have a good time! Intramural sports provides just the outlet for the majority of Manchester ' s students, who have dis- covered the wonders that knocking a ball around tor an hour can do for one ' s attitude. The college provides an excellent program including such sports as volleyball, basketball, foot- ball, Softball, soccer, wrestling, and badminton. Trophies were also awarded for the first time this year to the top teams in Women ' s, Men ' s, and Co-Ed divisions. Here, different opinions, views, per- sonalities, and backgrounds mix to form just a small melting pot . Experiences of dorm life, making friends, taking Humanities Core, eating at the Union, and just plain living make us each a part of the others around us. Soon this stony conglomeration be- comes a workable community of friends. n 97 A. BLAIR HELMAN A college president is just like any other manwho lives in the public eye. There are stories told, jokes made, and he becomes the reason for many a complaint-oriented issue that really wasn ' t his fault to begin with. There was a college president who assumed office at a time when his uni- versity was plagued with budget cuts and student unrest. Shortly after he as- sumed office, he was asked by one of his faculty, how he was weathering the storm. He replied, Well, during the day, I ' m under a great deal of strain, but at night 1 sleep like a baby-sleep- ing for a few hours, waking to cry, sleep for a few more hours . . . ' Being a college president tends to elevate an individual to a plateau where he seems to be a god-like char- acter, when all the long, he is just as human as the rest of us. With our lim- ited language, we label that plateau, Greatness. A single word that acts as a filter. That changes perception. Not how that Great man sees us but how we see him. Thus, we present to you, the Presi- dent of Manchester College, A. Blair Helman, whose thoughts and ideas will live within us as long as those of our professors. Why is it that Greatness is never being alone, but always lonely? CoUege President A. For some of us it was only the be- ginning of our higher education. We came in uncertain of our goals, fright- ened by our new surroundings, and eager to meet our challenges. For others our second and third years at MC showed further growth. Our hopes of job opportunities were renewed as we learned more. Old friends were kept, and new ones made. Good and bad times were shared. Those of us who spent our last year here gathering bits of information to finish off our college career have looked back to cherish or resent the time spent here. Whatever our e.xperiences have been, we ' got it together ' and persevered through another year of tears, laugh- ter, work, play, love, hate, and all those experiences found in the very joy of living. 150 AUTOGRAPHS 151 AUTOGRAPHS 1i 152
