Manchester students helped build these bleachers during the De- pression years. But during recent years the bleachers, due to cracking and shifting cement were considered unsafe, and are now replaced by metal bleachers. The new bleachers were dedicated at Manchester ' s first home football game of the 1975 sea- son. 20 |ii4ii;ai ' iJt . The team record was 4 wins and 6 losses in regular season matches, while the team placed 6th in the HBCC , However, Coach Weller has expressed that the season could have been better had the scheduling been arranged more in accordance tg the Spring Break. Coach Weller also feels more confident towards the next season of spring tennis in ' 76, and for the future as well. 21 jUggj H ' H H SOFTBALL ' 75 Smaltzie, another Joe Morgan? Although there were disappoint- ments and setbacks, the team persevered and drove to an- other good season of 6 wins and 5 losses. Manchester also placed sixth out of eight other striving opponents in the HBCC (Hoosier -Buckeye Collegiate Conference), sixth out of ten in the Tri -State Competition, and eighth out of fifteen in the NAIA (National Association for Inter-CoUe- giate Athletics) golfers ' tournament against other equally determined teams. Coach Jarrett looks forward to a more promising as well as prosperous season for 1976. ' ike Love tees off. Outstanding team members for the ' 75 season were Steve Dimitt, Honorary Captain; and Bari Faudree, who was named to the District 21 NAIA Honor Team (10). FALL TENNIS The fall of ' 75 proved to be a more than successful Tennis season for Manchester ' s Spartans. With the net- ters placing second in the Hoosier Bucheye Collegiate Conference (HBCC) and ending with a 3-5 re- cord in duel meets, they seemed to have started putting things together. According to Coach Stan Weller, a combination of many factors has made the team, in his words, jell together, but mostly it was due to great team determination and just plain hard work! Though there will no longer be a regular spring season, as has been true in the past, the team, in spite of it ' s youth, must now replace three va:cant positions for the Conference line-up, due to leaving team members, which were key individuals who helped determine the team ' s placing second in the conference. Neverless the team con- tinues to rebuild itself, into a pro- mising, if not threatning team for the fall season of ' 76. 39 CROSS COUNTRY Team; 1 to r; first row, Beth Kintet, Beth Besecker, Shirley Perlich, Brenda Flory, sec. row; Bill Cook, Ed Min- nick, Steve Simmons, Jeff Fourman, A new added attraction??? 40 third row; Paul Gilmore, Mark York, Greg Mort, Stan Wil- mort, Jim Burkett, fourth row; Cal Roe, Mark Lisak, Dave Ladd, Gene Smith, Ron Ross, and Dan Lindley. Ed Mlnnick makes it look easy. The 1975 Cross Country Team had another good season plac- ing 3rd in the HBCC, 2nd in the Manchester Inv., and 4th in the district. Even though the team had a good year they felt that they should have done better. Before we started classes this fall the team held a camp which really helped. Stan Willmort was all-conference and an all- district runner, and Ed Minnick was an all -district runner. Next season looks good for the Spartans. Greg completes another of the many miles that he runs each season. 41 VOLLEYBALL Bump, set, spike, and move rang through the women ' s gym during the months of October and November. These words set action for the women ' s volleyball team which es- tablished another good season (15-3, tournament included, 17-3). Greater than the record, was the character of the team and indivi- duals. Team work, spirit, together- ness, respct, and pride were the best contributions of the 1975 version of Manchester Volleyball Team, 1 to r. , front, Sayeed, Cinda Hambush, Kathy Gordon, JanOrwig, Susan Edison, Carmi Thorton, Coach Weirick. The 1975 Soccer Team exhibited a lot of fine play plus a good year for experience. Having lost eight starters from the previous year the team was able to finish a somewhat long season with a couple of strong wins. Coach Jack Jarrett feels that Manchester ' s grid irons got off to a slow and regretful start, therefore they couldn ' t put things together soon enough in the early half of the fall season. However, towards the latter half of the season, the Spartan ' s began to roll and started to pull themselves together. Though things started looking up for the team, the season was to Ballinger hands off. The Spartan powcrliouic. .;-i? ' ' ' iv Bailie lookin for the big play. The Spartan ' s were to finish strong for the ' 75 season, despite their falling short of goals and expectations, as they finished up with two wins and seven losses In regular season play, and then winning two of six HBC Conference games. If good past performances hold any truth, and if the last two games is any indication of things to come, it looks as if it could be quite promising for Manchester football in ' 76 next season. 48 Front row, 1-r: Don Przybylinski, Tom Reid, Mark Childs, Mark Hill, Steve Dimitt, Tim Almack, Tom Cook, Greg Helman, Kent Rosenbaum, Mark Hoffman, Mark Ballinger, Jim Reff Second row, 1-r: Steve Walton, Brad Limbert, Rich Richey, Scott Frazier, Rick Overfield, Craig Hill, RickTrox- el, Dave Lopshlre, George Mark- ••■ ' 1 i-- Cocking back to connect with a receiver. mjyyr sj e 1 2 1 w 1 if off, Kevin Frey, Phil Wright Third row, 1-r: John Igoe, Chas Hum, Tim Pinkerton, Tim Johnson, Phil Kinnison, Dave Melandy, Ken Bran- non, John Goree, John Miller Fourth row, 1-r: Joe Jarrett, mgr., Kevin Troyer, mgr., Jim Nicholsen, mgr., Chas George, Doug Smith, Mike Degetter, Steve Hilligoss, Lin StoUer, Randy Siler, Mark Hughes, Brian Dolezal Fifth row, 1-r: Dean Dum, Tim Forlow, Doug Coss, Rod Kersey, Kevin Buchanan, Jim Brothers, Dave Lebeveff, Mel Huston, Dan Nightengale, Neil Nommensen Top row, 1-r: Dan Hoffman, Scott Mannering, Tom Underwood, Coach Gratz, Coach Wolfe, Coach Jarrett (Coach Phillips is missing for picture) Hey! Other than cheering at all the athle - tic events they could, they held a great bonfire, and shared their spirit with some high school cheering squads. Overall, the play was a success. 54 WINTER FESTIVAL Winter Festival this year lacked one of winter ' s basic attributes- -snow! But even without the white stuff, the indoor events still proceeded on schedule. On Tuesday night Simon and Company entertained in the Oaks, and on Wednesday the Ping Pong and Billiards Tournaments and the Ikenberry Date Auction held the spotlight. They have a 14-10 record with a 10-6 con- ference record which placed them third in the conference and assured a birth in the NAIA playoffs. Women ' s Basketball ' 76 A wise man once said, You can never judge a book by its cover. So it was with the women ' s basketball team this year. The 7-5 record certainly is not a true representation of all the effort, sweat, learning and enthusiasm that ev- ery member put forth. This year was a rebuilding year for the women, with six new freshmen on the team. But leave it to the women, and Coach Weirick ' s leadership-they still came up with a winning season. Unfortunately the team will lose three good seniors: Carmi Thornton, Areda Brow- er, and manager Pat Norris who will soon see what the game is like from the coach ' s viewpoint. Good Luck! As for the team. A Job Well Done. According to the players, next year is gonna be even better! 60 WOMENS TEAM POSTS A WINNING SEASON The leading scorers for the team were Jan Smaltz and Carmi Thorton, while Connie Thomp- son and Peg Plummer added scoring punch. 61 Senior wrestler Cal Roe became an outstanding catalyst for the ' 76 team, by beat- ing one of his opponents, who was the Conference Champ, in a decision. Other strengthening elements to the team were Tim Pinderton and Rick Overfield. Ready to pin! Front row, l-r; Dave BalUnger, Les Hubbard, Tom Wagner, Cal Roe, Stan Zanetti, Jerry Clore. Despite the efforts that the team and out- standing individuals put forth, the team fell just short of a winning season. This was greatly due to several wrestlers receiving injuries and others hav- ing to drop off the team for various other reasons. According to Coach Gratz, although this year was somewhat disappointing, it produced great potential for the coming year. He feels that next year will prove to be an outstanding year in wrestling. Even though the team will still be young and inex- perienced next year, Gratz feels the team will be stronger , and he is confident that the 1977 season will prove to be a successful one for Manchester. A quick team conference. J 6l The ref begins the match. He has also worked as football trainer for many years. President Helman, with great reluctance, accepted Coach Wolfe ' s resignation, which is effective at the end of this contract year, Wolfe has won many awards for his coaching. Named Coach of the Year in 1966 by the District 21 of the National Associ- ation of Intercollegiate Athletics, and by the Hoosier Col- lege Conference, he coached the Spartans to a victorious season as they grabbed the Conference Championship. Wolfe again lead the Spartans to the NAIA playoffs this sea- son. As President Helman stated, He made a profound contribution to the education of hundreds of students through his teaching, coaching, counseling and example. He will be greatly missed. After a significant period of service to his alma mater, he now feels called to other work. We re- spect his decision and wish him well. 64 e rmiM — 4, •L 1«5 A« - INTRA-MURALS In a college, between all the classes, labs, and studies one must find time to work out frustrations. Intramural athletics tend to re- lieve tension just by participation. The program at Manchester consists of football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball, and these plus added eyents give each student ample time to him- self. A TIME TO GATHER TOGETHER  S|: 67 COMMUNITY COUNCIL Community Council is composed of twenty -two students, four faculty, one staff, and one administrative appointee. These people constitute a unique type of campus government. Different factions of the campus community meet here for investigation and communication of common problems and goals. The council sponsors programs of reform, evaluation communication, cooperation, and achievement for all aspects of the college community. It is a leading voice of Manchester College, John Ikenberry, President of the 1975-76 Community Council, is a Senior at Manchester majoring in philosophy. In the campaign for Community Coun- cil President, John made a unique campaign promise -if elected he would offer a quarter, 25 , to any full-time student of the 1975-76 academic year. The money would come from his salary as president, and might be thought of as a partial refund of a smdent ' s contribution, through tuition payments, of Community Council. Manchester College believes students are responsible for their own actions, and therefore try to allow the maximum amount of freedom possible in most areas of campus life. Con- sistent with this philosophy, the court reviews disciplinary cases referred to it by residence hall councils, individuals, or the deans. Five students, one faculty member, the Dean of the College, and the Dean of Students make up Community Court. Seated: Mr. James Shively; Mary Mallott, Chief Justice; Gay Traxler. Deadline always seemed rushed, but the pages were sent in one way or another. Photographers could be found running between classes, picture appointments, and the darkroom while other staff members wrote copy, drew layouts, and typed-all in an oft-articulated sense of confusion. But we finished the book. With the theme For Everything There Is A Season , sports activities and special events were grouped to- gether according to the seasons of Spring, Fall, and Winter. Another innovation was grouping all of the underclassmen together. All in all, the yearbook work, though sometimes tedious and frustrating, proved worthwhile and- sometimes even enjoyable. 1976 AURORA STAFF Editors Damon Fields Dave Cox Events Marie Palacious Donna Strycker Organizations Jean Harrison Deb Sims Susan Young Facul ty Mel Shanner Marlene Alderink Underclass Sharon Mast Sheryl Byerly Seniors Alice Campbell Cindy Freed Index Nila Staller Sports Roger Cassel Dane Landon Jan Smaltz Photography John Parker Steve Link Ken Klemm Lynn Witmer Contributing Photographers Steve Pontious Louis Wong Jan Smaltz Brad Bohrer Bob Vogel Seated, l-r; Lynn Hagginbothom, Larry Stratmeier, Dan Tyree, Don Ross, Brian Witte. L 1 HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW PRESIDENT HELM AN? 1, What is the most difficult and time-consuming part of your job? A . I spend a great deal of time working with financial problems and seeking resources to operate the college. In an independent college such as Manchester, a large part of our finances must come from contributors. Much of my time is spent interpreting the college to our many publics. There is much disagreement among our alumni, members of the sponsoring denominations, faculty, students, and other friends on issues such as visitation, smoking, and other regulations. 2, What is the biggest event in the school year for you? A. Commencement--this is what it is all about, isn ' t it? I enjoy seeing the students reach their goal. It is a real joy to work for four years with such quality young peo- ple as we have at M.C., and I always hate to see them go. But I am confident that this college generation vv ' ill contribute as much to society as previous generations of Manchester graduates have. 3, Do you like to play softball? A . Yes, I think softball is fun, but the only time I play is on Camp Mack Day. When we were younger, be- lieve it or not, we gave the students a rough time of it. 107 MANCHESTER ' S ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL ST A YS ON TOP OF THINGS Dr. Paul W.
