Office of Admissions Expressions . . .J-A« ' ' . ' 9L ' V-: ' EXPRESSIONS I am an Individual I could stand lonely Against the sky, yet My fingertips touch others Who stand like me. — Unknown GROWTH Growth first emerges as that wordless yearning in a child, that unquenchable itch to scratch the earth and paw the turf and assert his own small legitimacy. His growth expands out of a whole array of little presumptions and extensions of his senses. His restlessness cultivates and blooms Into Expressions. The shrines and symbols man has constructed stand in eternal commemoration of himself . . . The sudden death of young Brian Eikenberry touched the very fiber of his teammates as well as every member of the college com- munity. K ... his convictions, superstitions, and the changing myths we ' re made of. He begins to sense himself. He perceives lie is a part of something very large and he feels as well, the germ of the death of his own childhood. Man has always been a perishable landmark. But he also has been able to erect solid symbols to immortalize his existence, and perpetuate his profoundest faiths. Across time, like stages of growth men have monumentalized their evolving self-perceptions. Thoughts roam free in a fresh mind that has not yet surrendered its ability to fantasticate or its capacity for sustained wonder. 10 We have the freedom to express ourselves, our joys, frustrations, victories and to share ourselves with the world. May Day festivities were planned so that Friday ' s classes were suspended in order that students, faculty, and staff could participate in the Trike Race, Tug-Q-War, Kangaroo Ball Race, V.W. Stuff and Picnic. There was a dance Friday night to finish off the days events. Saturday started with a canoe race down the Kenapocomoco River, a scavanger hunt, and a romantic midnight picnic that evening in the College Wood. The THREEPENNY OPERA was presented both nights. Elvis Pelvis wheels around the curve. Straining down the home stretch. Concert Band entertains . as the May Day crowd listens. 19 THREEPENNY OPERA The Theater of Manchester College presented this drama by Bertold Brecht both Friday and Saturday evenings of the May Day celebration. Brecht was the leading theoretician and dramatist of what is called Epic Theater which is a mixture of narrative and dramatic technique. He tries to get to the mind rather than the emotions of his audience through alienation of the stage action from real life. Hence he directed that stage props be exposed and the actors speak directly to the audience from time to time. The Threepenny Opera was a delight- ful production and was far more than mere entertainment. The story of Mack The Knife, the Scourge of England, is about to begin. CAMP MACK DAY Melon Mess and Camp Mack Day provide a means by which students, professors and new students become acquainted with one another. The Melon Mess consists of games, contests, and of course, watermelon during the dance. Camp Mack Day classes were suspended for a change of pace, and was filled with such activities as volleyball, soft- ball, football, boating, and square dancing. Bud Tully, Bedelia Weirick, and Lola Sanger first in line to hear the dinner bell. A pleasant afternoon of boating. 23 The Spartans met heavy opposition on the field. The crowd anxiously watches the Homecoming Game. The Do-Ron-Rons lifted Half-time spirits high. 24 Romantic couples sway to the rhythm of the Jazz Band at the Homecoming Dance. HOMECOMING 1974 The Spartan Homecoming began early in the weel with the Tuesday Night in the Oaks Kicl - Off. Wednesday featured a song-fest, Thursday the Bon- fire and sl it, and Friday was fiiled with games, con- tests and a dance. Saturday brought aiumni, the l lorris Observatory Dedication, football game with Hanover, and the semi-formal dance in the Union. Mrs. Charles Morris attended the dedication ot the observatory in memorial of her husband. 25 Our hero arrives at the recruiting office. HOMECOMING ' S DRAMATIC PRODUCTIONS Two one-act plays were presented to Manchester College during Homecoming Week. BREAKAWAY Spooks and Goblins Steal the Scene but not everyone is so graceful. 28 That special guy brings a thrill to a girl ' s heart. Breakaway offers women on the Manchester College campus a special weekend to break away from social standards by asking a favorite guy out for an evening ' s fun. Romantic music and a good partner convinces the guys that turn- about dances are a good thing. Sharing a laugh with friends is the best part of any get-together. 29 Activities for Breakaway includ- ed a homemade ice cream social, the usual Powder Puff football game, a movie on Friday, and a soccer game, a football game, and a dance on Saturday. This could be the start of a great romance. I ! Hi B H m M tj H Hh Z P M 0 i l Eji It ' ' f l Football — always a part of Breakaway. Fads and fashions may come and go, but the men and women of MC will always have something to remember. Buzz, Girls, Buzz! Though the weather was dubious from time to time, it was cold enough for some exciting Hocl ey games and an Ice Skating Par- ty. There was a Midnight Movie Friday and a dance Saturday featuring the band Good Day ' s Catch . The following Saturday, Oakwood Hall presented their an- nual semi-formal dance in time for Valentine ' s Day. - « • ' 32 HANDEL ' S MESSIAH As is traditional at Mancfiester College every four years THE MESSIAH by Handel was performed at the annual Christmas Concert. Over 1 20 students, alumni, faculty members, and community members came together under the direction of Clyde Holsinger to pre- sent the concert. A special Messiah Orchestra , which consisted of musicians from various other musical organizations, provided the accompaniment. Concentration focuses on the director. The chapel sets a snowy scene for winter. The Spartans were a young squad with only two seniors (M. Miller and K. Lobsinger) on the roster. Over use of key players and in- stability in game plans were major factors in several contests. The Spartans managed to land three players on the all district team (T. Almack, M. Miller, G. Helman), and two on the H.B.C.C. team (Geo. Markoff and Rich Richey). This year four freshmen and three sophomore women were chosen for their skill and enthusiasm to generate spirit and boost morale both at games and around campus. Some of the innovative ideas proposed by our Spartan Yell-leaders have been to rope off a Student Section at games; organize cheer- blocks (the cheerblock from East Hall was an enormous success); and find a bus to transport students to and from away-games. • • i« m 4 ■ ' ' v iiW| t Bt E i IVILIIJ rJc M L Mrm. m !■■ Mh - r m -.r T t W ' x 1 %f 7 ' - K id B RJ k. v l H KV - Im IjK i ■ ■ ., L — iii-i H X J B W m.JA wt Deb and Paula keep their eyes open. SOCCER ' 74 The Manchester soccer team ended an otherwise frustrating season on a good note. They upset previously undefeated and top ranl - ed Grace and were invited to the NAIA playoffs. In a season dominated by misfortune, injuries, loss of l ey players, and the tragic death of Brian Eikenberry, the soccer team showed great courage and determination. With only three returning lettermen and a continual run of injuries, the matmen had to struggle to field a team. The undermanned wrestlers made up for their lack of depth and experience with a lot of hard work and dedication. With hard work and another year ' s ex- perience, Coach Gratz has high hopes for the future. The opponents meet. The lack of a big man was probably the most harmful blow to the Spartans with a trend toward inconsistancy being the second major factor in their struggling 5-21 season. 62 Rick Blastick, Dan Carmony and Roger Hirschy were the mainstays for the Spartan cagers with Todd Howard, Gary Purdy and Mark Ballinger as capable roundballers. The team is young and enthusiastic. With the ex- pected return of all but one letterman, the Spartans figure to be a team to be reckoned with in the very near future. Coach Wolfe should be having a lot to smile about. 63 Technique, skill, ambition, desire, and dete ' rminaT tion, a thought process followed by correct physical application create OUR GAME! Characterized by unity, good sportsmanship, hard work and a very positive attitude, the season brought a winning record. The women entered with an inexperienced team but improvement was rapid as they met two tough competitors in Franklin and Cedar- ville. The year saw only two injuries but both were serious; Senior Nancy Greer broke her hand in the Taylor game and Freshman Cin- da Hanbuch received a severly sprained ankle in the first game of the tournament. Junior Carmi Thornton called the plays for the team while Sophomores, Jan Noel and Areda Brower added versatility as they played both the guard and the forward positions. The freshmen added their punch with height and aggressiveness in Cinda Han- buch and Jan Smaltz. 65 WOMEN ' S VOLLEYBALL Season Record: 7-4 Post Tournament Record: 7 -7 The above records are not indicative of the potential or the calibre of play which the 1974-75 women ' s volleyball team possessed. This year ' s ver- sion was probably one of the best teams wielded by Coach Weirick; it displayed versatility, enthusiasm, ability, drive, desire, with unity as the cohesive power. The person who sets the ball is one of the most important persons of the team. Unless there are good sets, there is very poor spiking power. The outstan- ding setters were: Senior, Pat Fucik; Sophomores, Jan Noel, Sue Edison and Kathy Gordon. Adding the extra punch with powerful spiking were Senior, Nancy Warner; Juniors, Jane Jones and Carmi Thorton; Freshmen, Jan Smaltz and Connie Thompson. With such activities as volleyball, foot- ball, Softball, basketball, wrestl- ing, badminton and hockey, the college tries to provide an out for whatever sport the students choose. The programs are usually coordinated by the students with an advisor. This year there was a slight stir when one of the men ' s intramural basketball teams signed a girl to play. This caused a dispute which still has not been settled at the time of this writing. It is our hope that in the future the intramurals will be used as they are intended — as an out for athletic urges — and not as a testing ground for someone ' s political views. 68 69 72 EXPRESSIONS OF INVOLVEMENT 73 EAST HALL Preamble to Constitution: We the wonnen of East Hall, believing that the education process should in- clude such measures of responsibility as to promote complete development of character, leadership, and a sense of social values, do establish this constitution, con vinced that through self-government these aims may be furthered.
