Maybe we have needs (that we ' re not aware of) that reveal themselves in an unconscious manner . . . a lot of our gestures, actions, desires, words might be motivated by an UNKNOWN hidden inside us (invisible even to us) like, sometimes we do things that are confusing, erratic, frightening and we ' re not always sure WHY , but often when we see other people acting like this strangely, we criticize them for being insincere . . . immature . . . maybe all they actually are is REAL . . . like us. The overtones are lost, and what is left are conversations which, In their poverty, cannot hide the lacl of real contact. We glide past each other. But why? Why- We reach out toward the other. In vain— because we have never dared to give ourselves. DAG HAMMARSKJOLD: Markings Among all these different people- Greeks, Independents, dormies, freaks, football jocks, minorities, and majorities — I still find It hard to find myself. I associate with a variety but don ' t really find myself In any category. But that ' s O.K., too. Because we are individuals. Author Unknown We have to know ourselves to be ourselves. And to be ourselves might be the only real CREATIVE ACT we will ever live. And people have been saying don ' t do this— don ' t do that, preserve, reject, turn away, you ' re too young . . . but seldom let us see what it means to be masculine . . . feminine. It ' s not all perfume and body-building and the right moves . . . It ' s not something we put on or build in or buy at the cosmetic counter. 10 It ' s something we are always discovering in our lives ... in others . . . it ' s in our breath and sweat and anxieties in our emotions and dreams in our bodies maybe slumbering, till we take the risk of asking Who am I? maybe, if we keep laughing, hiding it will slumber forever. ; :v-. But sometimes he finds only a tremendous confusion of persons and things— a culture. 12 And everyone is forced to try to find some l lnd of a mode, a pattern, an idea wliich will pull together all of the frightening diversity of the world. Everyone has to do this Or else get lost in the mess And hopelessly lost. 13 14 all around me massive multitudes living together killing each other some have said we ' re so much the same but not everyone looks like me i question the answer green turns blue turns red turns yellow and green again i ' m just trying to survive to be me to love and feel and sleep warm tonight. An informal game was played against the Peru Teens, a team of high school girls, for fun and practice. Golf Golf is one of the least talked about of the spring sports, but has had an excellent season under Coach Jack Jarrett. Randy Ollnger, all conference winner, and Gary Goshert, team captain, led the swinging Spartans to finish third in the Tri State Tournament, fifth in the Manchester College Golf Tournament, and third in the Hoosier-Buckeye-Central Conference. Randy Ollnger was voted the Most Valuable Player and at the Defiance meet, Gary Goshert set a new school record low at 68. Three out of eight players were seniors and left after the ' 73 season. The 74 Spartans are a small and young team— Randy Carpenter, Steve Dimitt, Burnell Landes, Rick Buck, and John Campbell— have done a good job and are looking for new prospects and an even better season in 1974. 48 49 Baseball Steve Neff up at bat. i ■iv: --.C -; i; = ' ; ' ;A - ' ■■• l.i! Pre-season hopes and ex- pectations were substantiated as the Spartan players conquered 10 of their 11 opponents in producing the state ' s best won-lost season record, 10-1. The direct result of this excellent season mark was an invitation to compete in the N.A.I. A. District 21 playoffs to determine the Indiana representative to the National Championships. The Spartans were assign- ed Goshen College on the opponent ' s field. Goshen proved the claim of being a tournament team by beating Manchester 7-1. The outcome of the game remains a mystery to the members of the squad. Goshen advanced on to the National Championship playoffs. Though the season ended on a sour note, it can- not nullify the success of the year as evidenced by the final 10-2 mark. STANDING: G. Hastings, J. Darnstaedt, M. Rohrbacher, E. Shankster, D. Other selections were the team ' s most valuable player, Eddie Shankster, who was also the state ' s leading scorer. The season can never be forgotten. A young man from the Sudan, Archangelo Goz, con- tributed his spirit and enthusiasm in his own special way; a peach added to the team with his ex- perience; tri-captains Dan Drotar, IVIyron Hostetler, and Lynn Longenecker provided leadership; starters demonstrated skill and desire; promising second and third teams gave it their all; Invaluable assistants were Kent Arnett, Stan Noffsinger, John Mishler, and Jan Darnstaedt; and lastly and most importantly, con- tributing countless hours and ex- pertise, was the head coach. Dr. Greg Hastings. Fast maneuvers across the field. 65 Cheerleaders The Spartan Cheerleaders are led by Miss Welrick, as sponsor, and by Mona Overmeyer, a senior and the captain of five freshman girls who make up Manchester ' s cheering squad. Deb Hoffman, Pat Metzler, Becky Rondot, and Cindi Snider are all doing a terrific job this year supporting the Athletic Program. Rick Elastic contributed to the scoring power of the Spartans with a 15.4 average and Todd Howard boosted it still more with his 9.9 average. You are something peculiar always happening like happiness at the right time like ripe wine opening your dark eyes from within— pouring outward for my soul to see. Judy Shultz You slept without these heartless fears Peaceful, secure In a void of love, dreaming your foolish fantasies, Your plans unchanged and years from mine. I left you sleeping warm In your world Of dreams and slipped into the night. Whistling old songs that had no words. Hiding my face from dreams of my own, And breathing the comfort loneliness brings. It concen- trated on five areas of concerns in the 1973-74 school year — those being: concerns for the environ- ment, students, health, correc- tional institutions, and dependent neglected persons. These concerns were met by many enthusiastic projects — a glass recycling center manned year round by Circle K and Kawanis members; a log-jam and river clean-up; week-end activities for the college campus; fund rais- ing drives for charity orga- nizations; projects at Whites Institute; visits to Timbercrest; and many other projects of in- volvement.
