Football 1967 Spartan football fortunes took a wrong- turn during 1 the 1967 season as injuries, fumbles, and intercepted passes refuted hopes for a second successive HHC championship. Hopes were high for Coach Jack Jarrett and his staff as over 20 lettermen were returning from the 1966 team. However Taylor am- bushed the Spartans in MC ' s opening game and the Greeks could not fully recover be- fore the season ended. The overall picture was not all bad, however, as by season ' s end the inexperienced offen- sive line had learned to throw its weight around and was now providing holes for ball carriers Jim Andrews and Robin Gratz. Andrews again led the team in rushing with gains totaling 583 yards. Gratz was second with 492. Rob also was a dangerous pass receiver as he snared 16, second only to Bryan Moore, and turned these into an addi- tional 320 yards. Defensively the team was led by middle line- backer Mike Baker as he accounted for 54 tackles and assisted on 50 others. Paul Howard, a terror at end, also had 54 tackles and Bob Cornell and Tim DuBois chipped in with 47 and 46 respectively. Individual honors went to big Steve Hazel- wood and Rob Gratz as they were chosen to the HCC and NAIA District teams. Hazel- wood also shared co-captain honors with DuBois and Gratz picked up the MVP award. Senior halfback Jim Lilley was chosen to receive the Rotary Mental Attitude award. SPARTAN COACHES J. Senior Phil Hoskins was chosen as hon- orary captain for the team which was paced by Jim Noffsinger and Mike Stine. Stine posted the best time for the year as he raced to a 20:27 clock- ing ' in the Little State meet. He shared home honors with Noff- singer as both posted times of 21:44. Under first year Coach Jerry Royer and led by their fine captain, Jim Shull, the Greeks lost only one match and that by a single tally. Basketball Team Works Toward South America Trip Manchester ' s basketball squad ended its playing - season with a 12-14 record and thinking - of their South American trip. Under the guiding hand of Coach Wolfe the senior-studded Spartans fought hard but the breaks were just not there. As one might expect, Ail-American Dick Harris continued his record shattering performances during this season. His final game total of 42 against Taylor pushed his year ' s mark to 790. He also pulled d own 457 rebounds to lead the Spartans in this category. One statistic of interest to any fan shows Dick with 65 assists proving he was not just a scorer. Junior Jerry Walther was second to Harris in points with 457 and was second in rebounding with 207. Leading the team in assists was Steve Brewer with 9 1 and closely following Steve was Don Egley with 89. For the year the Greeks possessed shooting ' percen- tages of 49% from the field and 74% from the line and scored 2347 for a 90 point average. Under the guidance of Coach Gratz the Spartans compiled a 9 — 1 record and attained a second place confer- ence finish. Headed by Captain Don Harmon the Greeks totaled 292 points against 88 by their opponents. The Gaier brothers, John and Bob, combined for a record of 18 — and enjoyed the honor of going unbeaten and untied. Herb Bayer also was unbeaten, but recorded three draws. In the HCC meet the Spartans were nosed out by a single point, but managed to bring home five individual champs. Bob Gaier, John Gaier, Herb Bayer, Daryl King, and Steve Hazelwood were the Spartan champs. Baseball 1967 The 1967 diamond season was one of heartaches and frustrations as Coach Gratz ' s baseballers lost six games by one run. After opening - strongly against a powerful Valparaiso team the Greeks could manage only two more victories the rest of the year. Although their re- cord doesn ' t show it, much credit should be given to the three senior moundsmen. Joe Phillips, John Moore, and Dave Longanecker pitched well.
