Petersime served as a trustee of Manchester College for almost four de- cades. He gave unselfishly of his time, talents, and re- sources during his long tenure on the Board of Trustees. The Petersime Chapel, a product of his dreams and generosity, stands as a beau- tiful testimony of his interest and concerns in Christian high- er education. With his passing Manchester College has lost one of her most enthusiastic and loyal friends. -A. Between the present and the past arises a glowing affirmation of the American faith in the worth of the comman man and in the value of a homespun conscience. 28 29 - 4 The Roger Wagner Chorale Vance Packard PUBLIC SERIES PROGRAM 30 Antiqua Players National Players I Manchester College is continuing to bring excellence in comedy, dancing, poetry, and music to the campus and the community through their Public Program Series. WINTER PLAY U1 0 This play interpreted Rome ' s persecution of the Christians as political rather than religious. The emperor was not opposed to the Christian religion as such, but that he could not tolerate a propaganda that seemed to threaten the interest s involved in the established law and order. The Christian religion was revolutionary and the em.peror ' s security was endangered by a popular doctrine that did not respect the customs of the state. It was a test of political tolerance. 32 ANDROCLES and the LION 33 Ikenberry boys played 85 hours to become world champions. President Helman signals the end of the 85 hours. Steve Keller was official time- keeper and Gordie Miller was official score keeper. After the parade on Saturday, Carolyn Dinsmore was crowned Queen of the May. A baseball game and a track meet were held in the afternoon. HCC CO-CHAMPIONS Standing with HCC Coach of the Year Jack Jarrett, are four of the five men who were named all-conference in the HCC and NAIA this season. Left to rrghtare Jim Andrews, Tim Dubois, Steve Hazelwood, and Don Blair. 90 This year found the Spartans, led by their able coaching staff, posting a 5-4 season record, something that had not been accom- plished for 27 years prior. Bettering that feat, the Spartans claimed the co-championship of the HCC, a never-before received award. Leading the way for the Greeks was Jim Andrews who gained 667 yards in 189 carries. Close behind was freshman Robin Gratz tally- ing 600 yards in 131 attempts. Senior Pat Hodges was third as he gained 230 yards in 61 tries. In the passing department, Bacun connected 431 percent of his passes by hit- ting his receivers 47 of 109 attempts. Brian Moore led the pass receiving area as he caught 26 for 300 yards. Hodges was second with 17 catches gaining 190 yards. Andrews led all scorers with 10 TD ' s for 60 points. Gratz had 7 TD ' s and 2 PAT ' s for 44 points. Coach of the Year Jack Jarrett Defensively, the Spartans also compiled some good statistics. Mike Baker, fresh- man linebacker, led the defensive team with 52 tackles and 75 assists totaling 1 79 points. Dewayne Busbee was second with 42 tackles and 59 assists for 143 points. All-conference Rod Songer placed third with 142 points on 51 tackles and 40 assists. Not far behind was another all-HCC man Tim Dubois, with 51 tackles and 37 assists for 139 total points. The defense as a whole ranked nationally in the top three in the pass defense de- partment, a fine achievement indeed. Jim Stack picked off 5 passes to take first place in the interceptions. Songer was second with 2, followed by Jim Mustard who also had two interceptions, along with Don Harmon, also an HCC member. Hazelwood, Keaffaber, Howard, Stack, and Harmon all blocked punts during the season. Mike Baker and Keaffaber each recovered 3 fumbles to lead the team. Prospects were good for another cham- pionship next year also. Manchester ' s coaching staff. The worth of this program can be seen in these young people and the people they come in contact with -with the new understanding and friendships which develop in the course of their journey not only to a new land, but to a new world in their minds and hearts. In November I agreed to take Karen ' s place following the accident, even though I knew nothing of our yearbook operation. Deadlines came too fast and we were working furiously right up to the last minute. Without the help of many, many extras pulled in during the last few hours, this yearbook would not have been possible. For these wonderful people I am exceedingly grateful. I feel special recognition should go to all my staff, Mr. Garber, Mr. Fahs, Mr. Nelson, and numerous others who contributed their time in creating this book. Lisa Bitler 216 ].: ' i-vif ' Mm
