Some are self-confident, some merely happy at being on their own for the first time, and still others are completely bewildered with forms, class cards, and just getting settled for a year at college. The first few days are filled with an atmosphere of excitement and expectation, broken only by initiation into one of Manchester ' s traditions — standing in line. Everywhere one goes on any college campus, he finds groups of students discussing college, the world situation, dates for the evening or other subjects which seem impor- tant to them. Manchester is no exception as students gather in rooms off campus or in the dorms for the inevitable nightly bull session. This is continued every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9:30 on the South Side of College Avenue, where neither heat nor sub-zero weather can discourage the hardy souls who congregate there. Classes and Study necessarily occupy a great deal of each student ' s time. After Classes he works alone in his room or with a group in the library or by the fountain, reading books, writing papers or just keeping ahead of the daily assignments. College life does have its lighter sides, and the variety of leisure time activities are nearly as numerous as there are students to participate in them. Whether it means driving around the campus with an occa- sional stop to talk to friends or engaging in a snowball fight, the art of keeping oneself entertained is a well cultivated one at Manchester. The campus — a blend of old and new — is a vivid memory in the mind of each alumnus. From the traditional chimes in the Ad Building and the modern Hall of Science to construction of new dorms, the face of Manchester is continually changing to meet the needs imposed by each student generation. The walk between classes means an enjoyable break in warm weather and an unpleasant task in cold. But whatever the season, college students always seem to be in a hurry. No matter what the destination they usually manage to appear anxious to get there. In fact, the only breaks in this pace are provided by Manchester ' s never ending lines. A true education must include more than class work. Necessary also are the ideas that can be gained from the thoughts of an out- standing man or from participation in group discussions led by talented guest speakers. But even more important for each student is a chance to be alone to decide which of these ideals and values he should apply to his own life. 10 The quest of truth, a search for meaning, the development of a dynamic faith — these are some of the most vital activities in the life of every person. For many stu- dents the quiet beauty of the Petersime Chapel provides an ideal setting for the consideration of these essential problems. Love expresses itself in many ways on the Manchester campus. From a hasty kiss in the view of everyone (privacy is something almost impossible to find) to hours of talk about subjects known only to themselves, couples find that the hours they spend to- gether are the most remembered of any in college. 12 Four years at Manchester — a very short time in retrospeCT. Yet many things have oc- curred in these years which will be funda- mental in forming each graduate ' s life. After the whirl of commencement activities, the thought of leaving for the last time, the good-bys to old friends and a last look at the campus serve to remind each one how much Manchester really means to him. hn c Queen Jackie 16 May Day Maid of Honor Eleanor Iske A Touch of Scotland QUEENS COURT Ann Wildermuth, Barbara Lewandowski, Jackie Graber, Jan Felix, Eleanor Iske, Irene Miller, Sharon McDaniel. 17 suddenly it ' s May . . . and the days are clearer, longer, brighter; thoughts are lighter and the air anticipates May Day. Prince John Studebaker Breakaway Co-King Bob Knechel Once upon a time there was a lovely coed named Cindy Ellen, who lived with her big bad step- mother and many sisters in a castle named East Hall. One day as she was slaving away she re- membered that soon there was to be a big weekend filled with dances, parties and games. This was her chance to ask out her Prince Charming. 22 Co-King Paul Pedersen She bit her lip and clinched her fist and with a quivering voice she called him to make the big dates. With a relieved sigh he said, Yes! YesI Yes! The big weekend finally came and with pocketbook in hand she went to Ikenberry Castle to pick him up. They had a wonderful time at Breakaway — and you know the rest — they lived happily ever after. Camp Mack Day Boating — a popular way to get away from it all A day of hooky finds Manchester students and pro- fessors competing in sports. This year was no exception as Manchester students were provided with a variety of parties, dances and concerts. Coupled with the normal enthusiasm shown during the holiday season, this tended to keep the campus at a pitch that is matched by no other time in the year. Then, it ended abruptly as students departed for the long awaited vacations, leaving behind only a deserted campus. Gifts donated by Manchester students are presented to the Logansport hospital. at Manchester The last students prepare to leave an empty campus. C. C. Presidential Election With campaign week comes a flourish of challenges, speeches, and promises while students decide on their favorite candidate and express their choice by entering into informal debates. Buildings are donned with color- ful banners and posters. The climax is reached when the final vote is cast, the winner is announced and we look forward to a successful year. Pre-election parry provides candidates a chance to talk in an informal setting. For the graduate, however, as he accepts his diploma and a firm handshake, it also means a beginning with new problems, new chances and new goals. 39 iTHLETICA Iris Benidict. Tri Alpha set the stage in 1962 looking forward to another great year and by the time they had struck the second set of the season, they had already outdone themselves with two superb performances. The audience was delighted and captivated by The Man Who Came to Dinner. Arthur Miller ' s Death of a Salesman brought to the audience a more serious mood. Looking forward to the spring production of West Side Story , Tri Alpha is certain to close the season with an unforgettable year in entertainment. The first step to filling an auditorium is the preparation of a set. Artistic ability is a prerequisite for the set crew. A scene from Tri Alpha ' s first production. Even offstage, Tri Alpha members succumb to the lure of costume and make-up. 81 Row 1; J. Stoltcnber.a; M. WUIinpham; A. Gish; V. Stocksdale; P. Gish. Row 2: Mr. Roten; T. Runkle; C. Bollinger; P.
