He attended Illinois Institute of Technology, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from McPherson College where he was president of the student body and editor of the college paper. After earning his A.B. Degree at McPherson, President Helman went on to be awarded his M.A. from the University of Kansas where he is completing his doctoral dissertation. President Helman has served the faculties of Ottawa University, University of Kansas, and Friends University. Acting as Dean of the Kansas Institute of International Relations, Trustee of McPherson College and the Kansas Foundation of Private Colleges and Universities, Inc., President Helman has further aided the field of education. 22 Spending an evening at home comes so seldom to Presi- dent Helman that a meal with his family becomes quite an occasion. Seated at the table are President and Mrs. Helman with Harriet Ann, nine, affectionately called Bunny, and Patricia Dawn, five. More often President Helman is seen in attendance at auspicious occasions. Banquets are only one example of such activities. DEAN of the COM Dean Garver Graduating from Manchester in 1933, Dr. Earl S. Garver con- tinued his studies at Harvard University and the University of Chi- cago receiving his Ph.D. Degree from Yale University in 1943. He returned to his Alma Mater, Manchester, as head of the economics department. Dean Garver is known for his support and participation in religious, educational, and economic organiaztions. Equally recog- nized is his sincere interest in youth. Students find it easy to discuss their thoughts and problems with Dr. Garver who has a genuine desire to serve. 24 Miss Gertrude Wiebe, Dean of Women, grad- uated from Wheaton College and received her M.R.E. Degree from the Biblical Seminary in New York. She was awarded her M.A. Degree from Columbia University. Miss Wiebe has a warm interest in each Manchester student and takes time from her busy schedule to talk to anyone having a concern. Dean Wiebe makes a willing and enthusiastic member of many campus activities. Dean Wiebe Dean Bollinger A graduate of Manchester College, Dr. R. V. Bollinger continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. Degrees. After serving on the faculty of Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio, he returned to Manchester. Dean Bollinger is one of the first personalities with whom a Manchester neophyte becomes acquainted. A cheerful smile and a keen sense of humor enhance his versatile endeavors. Business Manager Mr. David B. Yeatter, Business Manager and Treasurer of Manchester College, received his training from Pennsylvania State College, Beth- any Biblical Seminary, University of Chicago, and the College of Business Management at the University of Omaha. He has served at Bethany and also in several banks in Pennsylvania. Mr. Yeatter manages the funds and investments of the college. His cheerful greeting betokens a vibrant personality typical of Manchester ' s spirit. Director of Admissions Paul S. Bowman, Director of Admissions, is a graduate of Dayton Junior College, Morris Har- vey College in Charleston, West Virginia, and Bethany Training School. He received a B.S. degree from Manchester College in 1946, and his B.D. degree from Bethany Biblical Seminary in 1950. Mr. Bowman served as pastor of the Pleas- ant View Church of the Brethren for two years, and became Director of Admissions at Manchester College in 1950. Traveling is a special pleasure to Mr. Bowman who has been in all the 48 states and Canada. 26 Robert M. Stauffer, Eldo Hendricks, Evan Kinsley, Albert Harshbarger, Clair Throne, Edith Dresher, A. Class of 1958 As the senior class of 1958 look back at the campus for the last time as students, they are filled with the memories of the activities of the past year — the climax of their life at Manchester. Their pride in being the largest graduating class in Man- chester ' s history is swelled by the capture of the bat at Camp Mack for the third year in succession, and the selection of 19 students to represent their class in the Who ' s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Ditch Day, student teaching, the Junior-Senior reception, and Senior Recognition Day, topped with Baccalaureate and Commencement, all went into the making of one great year. Serving as officers for the year were Max Snider, Roddy Rodkey, Elaine Rodkey, and Kay Barnhart, with the help of Dr. Orpurt, the faculty advisor. Diploma in hand, the seniors take their places as fresh- men on the Road of Life, stepping forward to challenge the world. 40 ■M Audley Bailey B.S., Sociology Feme Baldwin B.S., Religion and Philosophy Elaine Bandelier B.S., Elementary Education C. Class of 1959 A fine spirit, responsible leadership, and high scholastic ability are all characteristic of the junior class. Still another year has been jotted down in their memories as the best yet. Their attempts to down the seniors on Ditch day in the winter turned to efforts to express their respect and admiration at the Junior-Senior Reception in the spring. Personalities, too, have made their showing. In addition to the Aurora editor and the fall-term editor of the Oak Leaves, the Queen of the May was also chosen from their number, along with the Maid of Honor. OflScers of the class were president Don Hardman, vice presi- dent Dave Fike, secretary Lois Harshbarger, and treasurer Gary Foltz. Professor Niswan ' der served as class sponsor. With a successful past and a promising future, the juniors are eagerly anti- cipating their new role as seniors in the fall. 54 J iM Ron Anderson Charles Barnum Janet Ball Paul Basehore Howard Ballinger Gresham Bearss Agnes Barefoot Janet Beeghley Sally Beer Mary Bitting Janet Brand Dwight Beery Fred Bloom Robert Brantner Alan Belcher Anita Bollinger Rosanna Briegel n p .n Thomas Benner Charles Boyer Philip Brown O 1 Anita Buchwalter Jo Ann Clingenpeel Jerry Deeter Rosalind Buck Joan Coffing Norven Deeter Bob Burt Mel Coy Marilyn Dempsey Dean Burton Shirley Cree Ardon Denlinger Nancy Dotson Norm Downing Oliver England Dave Fike Morris Firebaugh Gary Folu Shirley Fahl Anne Frantz W-n $ - m Kay Farrar Larry Carton Larry Givens Don Hardman Adele Gingrich Lois Harshbarger Paul Goeglein Ron Hill Karl Grisso Janet Hilleary John Hoogewerf Joyce Jenkins Harry Keffer Leon Horn Silas Howard John Huffaker Eleanor Huffman Emmert Johansen Sharron Johnson Alice Joseph George Juergens Elaine Kessler Terry King Rose Krall Joyce Landis dmMiM Jik Marie Leckrone Joe Mann Larry McKinley John LefiFel Margery Martin Daniel Miller Beverly Lickey Paul Masterson Linna Mae Miller Dave Longenecker Ron McAdams Marietta Miller Peggy Loxley Ruth Mclnnis Bob Mishler Donna Lou Musser Shirley Ogle Joe No£fsinger David Palsgrove John Norris David Peters Carolee Ogburn Vera Petry Howard Ogburn George Phillips Joel Plnm Alda Richey Ed Puterbaugh Tom Rinehart Jim Ramp Dennis Roby Jerry Reed Shirley Rogers Mary Richeson Jim Rose i A%. For at that time they were returning as upperclassmen who knew their way around ; and to prove their worth, they began to assume more responsibilities and display .their leadership in the various campus activities. The class-spon- sored all school party, The Roaring Twenties, proved to be a unique and clever contribution to Manchester ' s social life. Later, the sophomores continued to play host to the school at the annual Valentine Banquet. Class officers: Con- nie Maugans, president; Howard Royer, vice president; Nelda Weaver, secretary; and Bob Brenner, treasurer. They soon found that college life wasn ' t all study, however, as they began participating in popcorn parties, organiza- tions, and various campus activities out of which were formed many lasting friendships. They also did their part in helping to elect Eleanor Muntz- ing to reign as queen of the Valentine Banquet. Activities were successfully led this year by Ron Weaver, president; Richard Tobias, vice presi- dent; Maurine Smith, secretary; and Sharon Neher, treasurer. An evening of operas, a recital for advanced stu- dents, and a symphonic band concert complemented the series. It is signifi- cant to note that the musical score and libretto of the opera, Ruwana, were written by Professor R. Gary Deavel and Gladden Schrock. RUWANA i 1 « %; i 1 tN V r r ) r. ' 84 n Work Day With all classes dismissed, Manchester students and faculty worked side by side to give the campus a face-lifting in preparation for May Day. This annual event gives those participating an opportunity to gain the first blisters of the spring and to receive reward for their toil by making their campus a place to be proud of. An informal picnic held behind Oakwood and a square dance for those with energy remaining were the concluding activities of the day. miw:mf M May Day Circus i Queen of the May, Joyce Rust May Day, 1957, was initiated by a l6-float parade carrying out the theme of Circus Fever. Joyce Rust, attended by the maid of honor, Lois Cosner, was crowned Queen of the May on the Kenapocomoco field. Entertain- ment for the queen and her court consisted of strongmen, gymnasiasts, and liontamers with a sprinkling of clowns throughout. A reception was held in the afternoon to give visitors and friends an opportunity to meet the queen and her court. For the hardier spectators, the afternoon also afforded a three-way track meet, a baseball game, and a tennis match as the Spartans displayed their athletic prowess. A banquet in the Social Room of Oakwood Hall brough the afternoon festivities to a close. Maid of Honor, Lois Cosner 1957 Fever Flibbertygibbet Prof. Jim Overholt The concluding event of May Day was Tri Alpha ' s presentation of Flibbertygibbet, a fan- tasy for children. Flibbertygibbet was played by Gladden Schrock with suppKjrting roles by Mary Alice Gilchrist, Robert Durnbaugh, Dwayne Wrightsman Andrea Borla, Adele Ging- rich, Janet West, and Rudolph Harley. This also was the concluding production for Professor Jim Overholt in the capacity of faculty advisor of Tri Alpha at Manchester College. Dress Revue Taking the hit song title Round and Round as a theme, the Colhecon Club presented its annual dress revue. Colhecon sponsors this event to give students an opportunity to model their garments and to create interest among high school girls considering home economics as a career. The narrator, Shirley Eis, described the crea- tions shown by the models in 12 different scenes. Adding the finish- ing touches to the program, a reception was held by the foods department. 89 Graduation I Fulfilling tradition, faculty members and graduates led down the walk to the auditorium for the graduation exercises as families and friends gathered for the occasion. Dr. Desmond Bittinger, President of McPherson College deliv- ered the challenging address. Following the pres- entation of diplomas, the seniors participated in the closing ceremony on the lawn. 90 4 Model UN Band Day Manchester serves high schools of the vicinity in several ways. Two such examples are the mock United Nations assembly and High School Band Day. The college-sponsored mock assembly of high school and college students was highlighted this year by the presence of foreign students from Fort Wayne who represented their home countries. Delegates representing the thirty-one U.N. countries debated pertinent topics dealing with current interna- tional problems. High school band students of this area have a chance to get a glimpse of college life as they are guests of the Manchester music department for a Saturday. The bands spend the forenoon in rehearsing together and taking guided tours of the campus. In the afternoon the combined bands perform at the beginning and half of the football game. These events provide valuable experience for both high school and college students. Camp Mack Outing Camp Mack Outing is the time for the whole campus community to migrate to Lake Wabee for a day of fun and fellowship. Besides various noncompetitive games and activities, the classes vie to win the coveted bat which is awarded to the class accumulating the greatest number of points in competitive sports. The Seniors proved victorious this year as they edged out the Juniors and took home the bat. This annual outing gives students and faculty an opportunity to become better acquainted as they participate, informally, in the day ' s activities. 92 Breakaway i Breakaway, Manchester ' s answer to Sadie Hawkin ' s Day, is the weekend when the tables are turned on the fellows as the girls take the initiative in the dating process. Grab-a-Gander provided the theme around which numerous events were staged this year. One may follow Sharon Neher, a freshman enthusiast, who dis- plays her acquired gentlemanlike manners as she picks up a date and attends the football game, hayride, and banquet. Homecoming The return of hundreds of alumni marked Homecoming, 1957, as a memorable event in the college year. Past classes were reunited and var- sity lettermen swapped tales at the M Club luncheon. On Friday evening, the students, join- ing in the Homecoming spirit, gathered steam for the activities by participating in the snake dance and bonfire; freshman boys contributed by painting the streets. Keen competition was evi- denced as M Club won top honors for their dis- play. For alumni and students alike, the day afforded athletic contests with Franklin in tennis, cross country and football. Second place First place Right You Are People of diverse types were portrayed in Tri Alpha ' s Homecoming presentation, Right You Are (If You Think You Are). The play con- veyed the basic philosophy of its Italian author, Pirandello, concerning the nature and form of reality. Mike Weybright as Lamberto Laudisi embodied the sentiment that you are right if you think you are. Mother ' s Day Mother ' s Day was of special significance be- cause of the dedication of East Hall, the new dorm for women. A tour of East Hall and an ensuing reception, a banquet, and the string symphony provided the feature attractions for the visiting mothers. V With 460 fathers and visitors on campus for Dad ' s Day, activities were initiated with an in- formal coffee hour and business meeting in which it was voted to give money for another block of post office boxes. Highlights of the afternoon and evening included the football game, a ban- quet and an address given by a former outstand- ing Manchester Qjllege coach, Carl W. Burt. 96 C. E. However, as the season progressed the team faltered somewhat from past years ' performance by failing to con- tinue their winning ways. The season closed with an over-all record of eight wins and ten losses. The Hoosier Col- lege Conference record stood at five and seven. Faudree led the team in bat- ting with an average of .333, closely followed by Alt with .293. Likens batted .290 and led the team in runs batted in with 15. Al- though Manchester led at halftime, 14-7, Indiana Central pushed the ball across for two touch- downs, sending the score to 21-14 as time ran out in the Homecoming game. Upsetting host Earlham ' s plan for a perfect Homecorrting, Man- chester led at the half 21-0, with scoring by Easton and Rondeau. On one occasion the team was rolled over by Anderson 121 to 66, but in two other attempts, the Spartans proved their power by scoring 116 over Ashland and 112 over Marian. The season play had be- gun with two consecutive wins and by January 11th the Spartans had won 5 out of 8 ballgames as well as having been the runners up in the Kalamazoo Holiday Tourney.
