In December it changed from I tt W , , , e efPV6'Ss to offset printing with its Christmas issue in order 10 allow greater freedom in makeup. Many of the changes were controversial, but the pape? received some roses qmong the brickbats. ' Editor John Askins took the Lance reins in September with little experience, but managed to stick out the year, learn- ing as he went, with the help of a few earnest and ex- perienced staff members - some of whom are pictured here. ln November he and photographer Curt Schulze qc. companied members of the Shield staff and faculty advisor Mrs. Alice Peeler to Miami Beach for a national collegiate press convention at the Fontainebleau Hotel. That and Q publications party were the only activities the staff partici- pated in, since the paper is not considered a social or- ganization. Columnists Tom Wheaton, Sharon McMichael, Doug Crepeau, Mark Provost, and Jim Andreasen provided commentary on widely diverse fields. The Lance came out at year's end firmly in the black finan- cially, largely due to the efforts of the advertising staff, Henry Depew, Tommy Orehowsky, and Becky Jones, and business manager Marilyn Heath. Pictures were provided by staff photographer Curt Schulze, and art work by veteran cartoonist Syd Bullington. Other staff members were Sally Truitt, assistant editor, and Bennett Taylor and Mike Fagan, sports editors.
