The three programs being offered are Civil Engineering Technology, Design Drafting Technology, and Electronics Technology. A student completing one of these two year programs will receive an Associate in Science degree en- abling him to demand a responsible position with an im- portant role in industry. Since the demand is greater than the supply, a graduate can also expect to receive better- than-average salary with semi-professional status in the community. This program was started on June 7, l96O, with a grant from the National Defense Education Act. This money is used to purchase equipment necessary for the technical training of prospective engineers and draftsmen. In December it changed from I tt W , , , e efPV6'Ss to offset printing with its Christmas issue in order 10 allow greater freedom in makeup. Many of the changes were controversial, but the pape? received some roses qmong the brickbats. ' Editor John Askins took the Lance reins in September with little experience, but managed to stick out the year, learn- ing as he went, with the help of a few earnest and ex- perienced staff members - some of whom are pictured here. ln November he and photographer Curt Schulze qc. companied members of the Shield staff and faculty advisor Mrs. Alice Peeler to Miami Beach for a national collegiate press convention at the Fontainebleau Hotel. To the right, Chuck Meiser makes one of the key maneuvers, his long slender body straining to put the ball through the hoop. Although Manatee had an 8-8 record at the time of publication, with team work and precise ball han- dling, Manatee was expected to improve greatly by the end of the season. The Lancers, utilizing a fast offense as their basic strategy, averaged 78.6 points per game. Head basketball coach Tom Garcia, former basket- ball player at Florida State University, worked with the team long hours after classes to build a closely knit team which performed with precision and ac- curacy at each contest. With ten games remaining to be played, the Lancers had to beat Brevard and Orlando for a spot in the upcoming state tourney. With Manatee improving all the time, the team should have very little difficulty in posting victories over these two opponents. All in all, the Lancers played a fine season with no regrets, only memories.
