Varsity Baseball 'Cane Hitters Come Through After a slow start, the Manatee diamondmen got hot and put together a 7 game winning streak. The streak began with a 5-2 victory over Fort Myers after MHS had fallen to a 2-3 record. Until the hitting picked up, good pitching and a tight defense held the 'Canes together. MHS got tougher when the hitting came on. The 'Canes faced tough competition which included defending Class AAA Champion Bishop Barry and District Champ Sarasota. Fred Klages fires a strike while pitching against Kathleen. Bruce Hall's smile tells that he hit the ball hard lerry Dowdy has to make a head-first dive back to second base. lerry was a pitcher as well as a third baseman. 'I46

Leadoff batter Dana Quisenberry lines a hit to right field to begin a game. 148 Defense Holds Strong Point A tight infield defense and a good pitching staff were the strong points of the Baseball Team. Seniors jerry Dowdy, Randy Clemons, Dana Quisenberry, and Larry Robinson, and junior Mike Scherman formed one of Manatee's finest infields in recent years. Coach Bruce Crump set a goal of five victories from each of these four pitchers: Ray Gault, Fred Klages, Bob Kloss, and Dowdy. Each pitcher that made that goal was rewarded with a steak dinner.
