'Canes Destro Qld Tradition The Hurricane Gridders, in posting a 7-2-1 record, had the first winning season since 1968 and the best record since the 1963 team was 8-2. In what was predicted as a rebuilding year, the players and coaches put it all together for many exciting victories. Manatee kicked off the year with a 10-7 upset of Sarasota. The 'Canes began a five-game winning streak with a 21-0 whitewashing of Cypress Lake. The highlight of the streak, which included a 14-11 Homecoming victory over Boca Ciega was a seesaw battle with Orlando Colonial in which Manatee emerged victorious 26-22. Coach Calvin Short's charges capped this superb season by upsetting King. Calvin Gissendanner eludes a tackler in the Clearwater game, Dwight Walton, Dan Fleming, and Keith Webb anchor the Manatee defense.
